Argento's love letter to Hitchcock. It seems more of a Hitchcock movie than an Argento movie. It had more suspense than horror and gore pieces. The music and camera work was very much like Hitchcock films, which is good. I saw tributes to Rear Window, Strangers on a Train (obviously!), Psycho, Dial M for Murder, Vertigo, and probably others, but I'm not a huge Hitchcock fan. There should've been a fat bald man cameo too. It also had the made for TV feel, as if it were an episode of some anthology series. The lead character Giulio was a bit annoying with his need to involve himself in everything. During the video store scene, I enjoyed looking at the movies and posters they chose to display. This movie must've been sponsored by Torino, because it's all over the end credits.

It's sad to watch one of your heroes worst pieces of art. Without the numerous Hitchcock references, it would be almost completely without any intrigue. It is shot in a very basic and unimaginative way, a sloppy effort all around. The acting is terrible and the story is just too obvious and predictable.

This TV movie is a surprisingly successful and thoroughly entertaining homage to Alfred Hitchcock by the man often erroneously dubbed the Italian Hitchcock, Dario Argento. The plot, a fusion of Rear Window and Strangers on a Train, is (predictably) full of holes, but the film never aspires to be anything more than a bit of fun. It's arguably the best thing Argento's done since The Stendhal Syndrome which, admittedly, isn't that strong a recommendation.

As a devote fan of director Dario Argento's work in the horror genre, ranging exclusively from the 70's to the 80's into the early 90's, I have this odd, unexplainable belief that if there is no nostalgia to a modern Argento effort; there is also no effort, or style, and no entertainment value. This belief hasn't been proven invalid since I first proposed it (Argento's "Phantom of the Opera" was truly awful, and most of what followed wasn't much better either); but there's always the possibility of an exception. In this case, that exception is "Do You Like Hitchcock"; a 2005 made-for-television feature from the master of horror himself. Watching it, I recognized a few things: there was no style, but there was effort, entertainment value, and nostalgia in healthy doses. These are things that quite a few of the more recent Dario Argento movies have lacked; and as far as those go, this one isn't half bad.
Well alright, maybe it is, kind of. This un-stylish but never uninteresting thriller follows young film student Julio as he attempts to take part in the solving of what appears to be a series of brutal murders that have been committed in the apartments surrounding his own. The murders share a similar thing: they seem to be inspired, in part, by the films of Alfred Hitchcock. There's irony in the situation; given that Julio and his girlfriend constantly rent out the director's films from their local video store, with Julio closely observing every last scene. So he might be of great service when it comes to finding out who the killer really is.
That's the gist of it, anyways. The first murder is committed in the apartment across the street, where a beautiful woman and her elderly mother live - that is until the elderly mother is the victim of the sadistic killer committing the crimes. Julio is paranoid that he might be the next victim; and we believe in his claims, due to the fact that it's made a known fact that somebody is following the protagonist, just as he is closely following others. It eventually untangles and then tangles itself right back up again; with about as many unneeded complications as intriguing mysteries to be solved. The story is uneven, but the characters are surprisingly well-played by their respective actors, and the movie certainly kept me engaged, no matter how ridiculous or slightly underwhelming it became by the finale.
With a movie like this, I'm simply trying my hardest not to complain. "Do You Like Hitchcock" has its pleasures - a minimalist style that Argento manages to work around in order to deliver some genuine thrills and chills, and a hilarious character that takes the form of a homeless old lady who collects trash from the bins outside random apartments and buildings nearby Julio's - even if they can't make up for its rusty plotting. Nevertheless, here's what I've theorized: people have indulged in cinematically messy stories and overall films for much less, and Argento is simply trying to do something new. What I assume is that a great portion of his fan base will be disappointed by the lack of gore, beauty, and artistry in the final product; but there's also a chance that a few compassionate souls will forgive and forget, and allow themselves to enjoy the ride while it lasts.
Being a cinephile, the references to the works of Hitchcock scattered throughout were enjoyable; and all scenes taking place at the video store that Julio and his girl rent from are energetic and brimming with Argento's non-signature, but non-subtle cinematic fanboyism. Sure, given these plot elements, I acknowledge that Argento probably could have done something amazing; but he crafts a simple yet somehow satisfying murder mystery in the tradition of his early Giallo pictures, minus the exquisite direction that had put him on the map in the first place. Look at Argento's older films, and you'll see that this is far from his best; but look at his newer ones, and you'll notice that it's far from the worst this filmmaker can do. He was once great; and "Do You Like Hitchcock" almost signifies a sort of return-to-form, stylistically, as long as you take out the flowing of the liquid red.
Way better than I could have ever anticipated, and worth seeing if you're an avid fan; I may not particularly like "Do You Like Hitchcock", but I certainly can at least appreciate it for what it is. Argento has tried to achieve something new and fresh for years; and I'll have to say that this is probably it. The film's an uneven mess for sure, but I enjoyed the feeling that I had while watching it. Certain plot elements and visual trickeries reminded me of why I admire Argento as much as I do in the first place; and while I loathe the absence of Argento's signature grotesque artistry by way of the bizarre blood and gore, I like what took its place enough to recommend the film to the Argento-faithful. For those who see it and don't like it; I feel as if I had warned you, and if you think differently...well then, too bad.

Decent endeavor movie by Dario Argento. Have a few clever twists into the (albeit muddled) plot and you got a surprisingly decent thriller.

One of the surprisingly watchable latter-day Argento films, and one that has something of a built in appeal for the movie nerd crowd. I enjoyed it pretty well, if only because you get a glimpse of an Italian video store, which was pretty cool.

Despite a whole lot of awkward dubbing, this manages to be a pretty entertaining homage to Hitchcock, both with overt references and quieter ones. I'm not very familiar with Argento's work, but I enjoyed this. A satisfying little thriller.

Perhaps I just haven't seen enough Hitchock films to appreciate it, though I imagine that even were that the case it'd still be a rather flimsy tribute.
I also found the dubbing annoying. I was hoping for Italian.

This was a strange movie. I liked the excitement and such that was in it, but wow was it strange. I guess it just did not have the real deal horror or such I was looking for. NOT a totally bad movie, just not a great one.

This is my favorite Argento film that I've seen. So... take that. Yes, there were no lesbian witches. Which was a huge plus. Actually, there was some at the beginning, but they left.

jeez.... dario....man... this was just....a let down.... he needs to go back to his roots and just go nuts... its a good for a watch and thats it....just to see how bad dario went down

See, I really like Hitchcock, but I didn't really like this movie. How the hell does that work? This is the second in my Argento set and boy, did it just take a sharp nosedive from Phenomena. First of all, I'd like to address that it looks like it is shot on video or mini-DV. End of the day, it looks like a PBS or a BBC special, which really turns me off. There's a reason I don't watch PBS movies, so why would I want my purchased film to look like that. Along with the PBS look is the PBS sound. I was planning on commenting on this later, but since I'm talking about the sound as it is, you'd think that a movie homaging Hitchcock throughout would try to have a bombastic, Bernard Hermann-esque sound and feel to it? Only once did they try to imitate it, but using a synthesizer is a poor substitute to a full orchestra. Anyway, I've seen almost every Hitchcock movie ever made. I love Hitchcock and when I knew this movie was coming up, I was excited as all get out. But the execution is just a little lame. This is more of a gorefest with a more-than-slight nod to Rear Window and Strangers on a Train. The thing is, most people pay tribute to Rear Window. It's been done a thousand times and never as well as the original. I am impressed with the Strangers on a Train allusion, but I feel that's more pretentious and snobby to make constant reference to a movie that few have seen. Yes, it is one of Hitchcock's real classics, but most people haven't seen it. You're lucky to find people who have seen Psycho,The Birds, or Vertigo...but Strangers on a Train? No chance. I also loved how that video store had a run on Strangers on a Train. I was pushing that movie on my recommendations shelf for weeks with no success. Do you really think that three people are going to be waiting for other people to return it (unless it was for a class)? Now to address more of the movie. I thought that a Hitchcock homage movie would really try to do more than simply reference plots of Hitchcock's movies. This really is Argento making his own movie without the camera work of Hitchcock. Rather, there's a lot of brutality and "easy" shots compared to what Hitchcock presented in his film. Also, his protagonist is just a weirdo puss. I'm sorry, that Vespa chase (only the Italians) was absurd and unnecessarily long. Most of the movie, the character scrapes by on luck alone and leads to a really lame Saboteur homage at the end. Really, the movie is terribly forced and needed a lot of work to be pulled off. The beginning really has nothing to do with the rest of the film outside of the fact that it establishes that the character has been nosy all of his life. (Honestly, you could have picked that up from the film itself without this bizarre sidestory.) Also, the cover image has nothing to really do with the film. It is a creepy image that is actually scarier than the film is as a whole. I'm sorry, Dario Argento fans out there, but this movie kind of is a dud. I'll soon be reviewing The Card Player. I'm sorry, but I don't think I'll be writing home about this director any time soon.
