Transformers
I have been waiting since I was about 6 for this film and it was awesome, only gripe is that there wasn't enough characterisation of the Transformers themselves, but the action is AWESOME. Wish I had seen it on the big screen and cannot wait for the sequel
28
The Bourne Ultimatum 2007,  PG-13)
The Bourne Ultimatum
More of the same from the amnesiac CIA agent but for this trilogy no bad thing. The most consistently good trilogy ever made. One strange thing though was it been called ultimatum but I don't think we've seen the end of this series as it is set up nicely for another.

Maybe it's because Bourne finds his real identity, therefore is no longer Bourne? Interesting to see where they take this next

Phenomenal - Transformers was excellent and this blows it out of the water. 5+ stars I loved it!
32
Casanova 2005,  R)
Casanova
Nothing about this indicated that I would like it. Crazy costumes and Sienna Mills normally would be enough not to bother but I watched it for my mums sake. I am not too haughty to say I loved it, period comedy caper and feelgood movie of the highest order. I love Casanova
33
Stranger Than Fiction 2006,  PG-13)
Stranger Than Fiction
Don't know what is going on but my movie viewing is becoming stranger than fiction. Movies I thought I would hate, I am watching out of sheer boredom and loving. I suppose this week has been a kind of digital version of "never judge a book by it's cover". The film is bizarre but like the story it narrates, there is both comedy and tradgedy to the tale, but thank god for the happy ending, which in itself is a dramatic twist as throughout the story it's not what you expect to happen. All the acting is excellent, nice to see Ferrell not been cast as a buffoon and Maggie Gyllenhaal lights up the screen as always

Tropa de Elite (The Elite Squad) 2008,  R)
Tropa de Elite (The Elite Squad)

Frost/Nixon 2008,  R)
Frost/Nixon
Acting chameleon Sheen takes on Sir David Frost before he reached the pinnacle of his career in presenting "Through the Keyhole".

The timing of the release of this film was perfect, coinciding with the standing down of another hugely unpopular Republican George W Bush. People would love to see politicians put on the spot and apologising instead of the constant spin we are constantly fed. Excellent. Been repeated by various politicians from all parties in the UK at the moment on a daily basis!
43
Collateral 2004,  R)
44
Donnie Brasco 1997,  R)
Donnie Brasco
Brilliant film but bizarrely there are some massive factual errors about a film that is based entirely on real people. The character played by Al Pacino was never whacked in real life and it was in fact the charcter played by Madsen that was in fact killed because of introducing Brasco into the Mafia. But don't let any of that stop you watching, it makes absolutely no difference to a masterpiece of cinema

The Magdalene Sisters
Very very good film. I was surprised. Amazing to think that ROI could be such a bleak place for women who had done nothing more wrong than pre-marital sex, or even "tempting" a man. to think this was set in the swinging 60's goes to show how powerful the Catholic Church was in Ireland, and it amazes me knowing that these things were very much a part of my parents lives growing up in Ireland. To think the last one closed in 1996 is shocking. Part of the church and Ireland's past that they should be ashamed of, not unlike a church sponsored Camp X-Ray.

A Bronx Tale 1993,  R)
A Bronx Tale
Great film about a young guy of Italian origin growing up in the Bronx, who is impressed by the local gangster, kept on the straight and narrow by his father and falls in love with a black girl at a time when this is seen as unacceptable.

Bit like Goodfella's in style but without the violence. It is not strictly a gangster film. In fact it is semi-autobigraphical story written by one of the lead actors, Chazz Palminteri. He also steals the show as the gangster Sonny
72
Blood Diamond 2006,  R)
Blood Diamond
Excellent. Think this is a fictional tale set against the realitty of civil war and the blood diamond trade in Sierra Leone. Incredibly atmospheric and portrays the true horror of the illegal diamond trade. Does at times wander a bit but that is a minor issue and Di Caprio is excellent.

In my opeinion better then the more highly acclaimed "Last King of Scotland"
73
American Gangster 2007,  R)
American Gangster
The best gangster movie since Casino, miles better than the Oscar winning The Departed although quite similar in the fact it focuses on two men on opposite sides of the law.

This film is New Jack City for the 2000's and after seeing this a true story it makes me think that New Jack was possibly loosely based on the life of Frank Lucas.

Also liked the way shots of the glamorous life of been a rich and powerful drug dealer were cut with shots of death, poverty and brutality, showing where all this money really came from.

Must see

Ronin 1998,  R)
75
Gremlins 1984,  PG)
Gremlins
Just watching it on TV now and forgot how much I love it. Seen it so many times and still like it. Acyually quite a lot darker than the kids film it appears to be as the Gremlins (not Gizmo) are very anti-social and violent. Like pikeys

Made 2001,  R)

John Favreau and Vince Vaughn are one of the best if not the best double act out there and Vince Vaughn easily one of the most under rated actors. I like him so much I wish I knew him. This film has everything laugh's, drama, sadness and Famke Janssen

Wolf Creek 2004,  R)
Wolf Creek
Absolutely horrifying and that is a compliment I am not a big horror move fan but this one is awseome. Draws from true events although not a true story. Goes to show that the most frightening thing in the world really are people
81
Home Alone 1990,  PG)
82
Omagh 2004,  PG-13)
Omagh
An excellent film, heartbreaking, horrific, riveting and many other adjectives. This showed the real victims of terrorism. Just normal people of all faiths with no political agenda losing loved ones in terrible circumstances. Also disturbingly it revealed the complicity of governments in the background of many such events. In a time where the trouble's in Ireland are now thankfully consigned mainly to history, this film is still relevant now with the whole world now on heightened terrorist alert
83
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 1975,  R)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Absolutely awesome, Nicholson just doesnâ??t do a bad film. Story brilliant, performances by all the cast were top class. 33 years old but no matter this is a real classic
84
In Her Shoes 2005,  PG-13)
85
Charlie Wilson's War 2007,  R)
Charlie Wilson's War
Enjoyable political drama. Not something I would normally write. Based on a true story gives a great insight into the covert funding and training of Afghan rebels against the Soviets in the 80's. As we all are well aware today, despite this the American's are still no more popular as many of the Afghan people never knew they even helped due to poor communication in the country. They felt they had just been abandoned by the world to fight a superpower. This lead to another reason for the Islamic world to resent the US. Despite not agreeing with the various invasions over the last few years, I can understand better why, the US is determined to finish the job and win over the people this time as the hangover from this conflict is one of the ingredients of the worlds problems today
86
Hoodlum 1997,  R)
87
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
Believe the hype, don't know how they will better this but can't wait to see them try. Very dark complicated tale and if people were to dismiss this as some sort of corny comic book adaptation they would be wrong. There is very little that is cartoon like as all including Batman are very menacing indeed, with very little been comic about them
88
Gone Baby Gone 2007,  R)
Gone Baby Gone
Ben Affleck should never go the action side of a camera again and stick to making films. This is excellent. His brother Casey though on the other hand is a real acting talent and the rest of the cast are excellent too. This film had so many parallels with that of the McCann & Matthews case in the UK made it all the more compelling and also explained the delay in release here. There were similarities in the abduction, like Maddie's, the girl who looked like Maddie, the false element of the crime like Shannon and the dreadful family also like Shannon.

Ben Affleck got everything spot on here, he obviously used his experience growing up in the poor Irish-American streets of South Boston as all the characters seemed so real and the use of unknowns and residents of the area itself were inspired and heightened the realism
89
Wall Street 1987,  R)
Wall Street
I have seen this before but in these troubled financial times I thought this was worth a revisit. It was. This film is 21 years old and on watching it you really have to wonder how governments can act shocked at the menatality surrounding the money markets. It has always been there and probably always will be. The character Gordon Gekko is probably working as a hedge fund manager somewhere now! Gordon Gekko really is an iconic film character, who symbolises all that is bad about the free market

Crocodile Dundee 1986,  PG-13)
91
Coming to America 1988,  R)
92
Angela's Ashes 1999,  R)
Angela's Ashes
This film appears to be a remarkable story but what makes it remarakable is the fact that it isn't. It is a tale that could be told by countless Irish growing up in an impoverished country in the 1930's. The only slight twist was the fact it started in America, went back to Ireland and came full circle for the lead ending up back in America. It covers everything, the awful poverty, the power and hypocrisy of the church , alcohol and disappointment. A common tale made to seem like anything but

Hotel Rwanda 2004,  PG-13)
95
Unforgiven 1992,  R)

Gran Torino 2008,  R)
Gran Torino
Magic. This film is well observed, has comedy, drama, tragedy religion, racism all major topics which some films struggle to handle just one and this covers all seamlessly
97
On the Waterfront 1954,  Unrated)
On the Waterfront
It can come across as a bit simplistic and self righteous compared to later films but it has to be taken in the context of the era in which it was made. It would have been hugely controversial making a film which showed the American unions largely for what they were, corrupt (unfortunately nothing changed) as well as dangerous as although the mafia itself is not named (not really even recognised by law enforcement at this time) there is still implication as the lead character Johnny Friendly was based on former Gambino boss Albert Anastasia. Perhaps to throw him off the scent they made most of the mobsters Irish-American!

Brilliant despite me knowing what was going to happen and dreading it, bizarrely you feel happy for the guy as despite losing his arm he comes out a better person. Had to watch the arm coming off bit through my fingers, amazing that this is based on a true story.
