Wow... what a spectacular feast of entertainment this was! "300" is another movie adaption of one of Frank Miller's graphic novels, and it has been recreated on screen with awesome visual excellence!
The story is an over-exaggerated take on the true events of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C where a small army of Greeks, led by the insanely brave 300 Spartans, stood firm against an army of Persians numbering in the millions who wish to add Greece to the Persian Empire. The courageous Spartans, led by King Leonidas (gerard Butler) fight off hordes of soldiers, hideous looking mutants, Rhinos, Elephants and even grenade wielding Ninja's to keep their lands and families safe from slavery. All the while Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey) stays in Sparta fending of the deceitful polliticians who wish to submit to the will of the Persian ruler, Xerxes.
Sword & spear are sliced through flesh in super slow-motion during the intense, heart pounding battle scenes in which nothing is left to the imagination. Bloody heads & limbs fly through the air as the muscle ripped Spartans hack their way through the Persian ranks in spectacular fashion, with Gerard Butler in fine form with a role that he was perfect for with his ferocious looking battle face and gruff, rousing voice.
Not much of a story to sink your teeth into, but the movie so bloody enjoyable you won't even care. The guys will be loving the exciting action and on-screen bloodshed, the women will be drooling over the perfectly waxed, loinclothed Spartans. I very rarely award 5 stars to a movie, but "300" would certainly be worthy of a 300 star rating on sheer entertainment alone. It's now officially one of my favourite movies and is a must-see movie for any fan of film out there.
A career best performance by Joe Spinell - an actor I only recognized by appearence rather than by name up until I saw this film. He plays the part of "Frank Zito", a disturbed and derranged man, mentally scarred by an abusive upbringing by his mother. He prowls the New York streets seeking out women to kill, scalping them, and bringing back their hair to place upon various mannequins he has placed around his home.
It's quite an effective, shocking and disturbing movie, with plenty of gore, some well shot stalking sequences and a believable psychotic performance by Joe Spinell. It's easy to see why this move gained such a bad rep back in the day, and you'd find difficulty in labelling this film as "Entertainment" with it's indiscriminant acts of violence towards women. But it is a good, and if you can stomach it, watchable horror movie, which has it's memorable scenes. Tom Savini, who also has a brief role in the movie, supplies the films make up effects and produces one of the most disgustingly impressive exploding head scenes I've ever seen! The movie ends strongly too with the films stand-out creepy scene that will stay in the mind for a while afterwards.
In my opinion, it's one of the best Horror movies of the 80's and one of the most disturbing films ever. I'd recommend it to all fans of the 'stalk and slash' genre.
An awesome and aggressively shot movie focusing on a group of Melbourne skinheads, led by "Hando" (Russell Crowe), as they wreak havoc amongst the growing Vietnamese community in their town.
A thing I liked about it is that it wasn't a preachy movie, and it has been critisized for being sympathetic to skinheads by giving them more of a heart, but this adds some realism to the film and makes it more interesting. What "Romper Stomper" is saying is that if you live a life of violence and hate, it will lead to your own self destruction whether you're a skinhead or an Islamic terrorist, it doesn't matter.
This is the best Skinhead movie out there IMO. It sets an excellent pace from the start making sure things are on the move and that it never gets dull - and it certainly doesn't! Very real and well acted performances, brutal, dark humored and unforgettable. OI, WATCH IT!
A little Gem of a Horror movie! Really enjoyable and one of the best I've seen in recent years.
The disturbing looking inbred mountain men made this movie for me. They were hideous, disgusting and very creepy in their look and actions. Stan Winston and his team did an excellent job on the special make up effects and props.
There are some good jolts along the way and a few very gruesome moments of gore, and the whole movie moves along at a good pace and doesn't drag on at all.
Hollywood should take note from this brilliant little Spanish movie and realize that it is possible to integrate a good story into a horror themed movie, and "The Devils Backbone" is a perfect example of what it can achieve.
This movie is stunning! Extremely atmospheric and eerie from the start, great acting by the whole cast and the plot keeps you hooked and on edge till the very satisfying conclusion.
A must see for those who do not mind the subtitles.
Although I feel it's slightly over-praised, this is still one of the best movies to come out of Japan in recent years. Violent, dark humoured, but also moving too. It's a real brave and original film that, despite the controversial subject matter, is worth a watch at least once to appreciate the intended message of the movie to put the shocking nature of the story into perspective. Then once you've grasped the meanings and messages of the film you can then watch it again with a more sadistic mindset and enjoy the ensuing bloodshed as friends and classmates selfishly kill eachother off to be the soul survivor of the Battle Royale Program.
'Ninja Resurrection' is probably one of the most hated Animes in the Western world because of it's similarities with another classic anime. It was seen as trying to cash in on the success of 'Ninja Scroll' by ripping off it's look and having it's main character named "Jubei" just as NS had.
The plot mixes Historical fact with myth and fantasy. The Historical aspect of 'Ninja Resurrection' features the little known struggle of Japanese Christians in the 17th century and their eventual annihilation on the orders of a ruthless Shogun ruler. The fantasy element of the story comes in the form of a prophecy which proclaims Satan's return through the "Heavenly Blessed" leader of the Christian Rebellion, "Amakusa Shiro". All the while, the legendary, "Jubei Yagyu" fights with his conscience and guilt over his part in the massacre of the remaining Christians and comes to realise the sinister occurrences of it's aftermath.
The story doesn't carry too much depth or originality, but it's action-packed with battles and sword fights to keep the excitement factor going. The film is ultraviolent though and may be too shocking for some viewers, with bloody dismembered bodies and sadistic acts of violence from the start. The actual animation is very good. The English dubbing of the movie, is adequate, but at times can be poor. One of the real plus points of NR would have to be the music which is pretty good for an anime, it really adds more emotion and intensity during the more important scenes giving them more of an impact.
This DVD contains the first two parts of what were to be a continuing series, but that was unfortunately scrapped because of it's poor reception it recieved, which is a shame because I think it started quite positively. Overall I'd have to say I really enjoyed 'Ninja Resurrection' but it may seem a pointless purchase due to the series not being completed. Therefore I could only recommend it to lovers of gore soaked action/horror anime movies.
Awesome movie! Breathtaking action and visually stunning CGI... it's just one of those films that you do not want to end.
The story of "Advent Children" continues on 2 years after the events which happend at the end of the Final Fantasy 7 game, with the planet still trying heal itself and it's people attempting to rebuild their world. But a mysterious disease, "Geostigma", and a trio of conspiring villains who plot to resurrect the evil Sephiroth bring about more trouble for the people of Midgar.
It's a movie fans of FF7 will adore more than others, and I being one of them loved every minute, though I was a little disappointed. Many of the main characters from the game had very brief appearances which was a shame, the story was a little difficult to keep up with at times and only two locations from the game are explored in the movie. But the amazing animation just keeps you glued to the screen as you try to take it all in. The action is incredible! The bike chases, sword fights, gravity defying kung fu all leave you breathless but thrill you throughout. And the musical themes from the original game also feature in this movie and will bring back those memories of playing the game for hours on end.
Many, if not all fans of FF7 will claim this as the greatest animated movie ever - I would have to agree. But those unfamiliar with the game will have no idea what the story is about or who the characters are as no back story is given about them at all. But there is enough here to enjoy for those who do and do not know the story well. Amazing film!
"The Daddy" of all prison movies. No other film has come close to being as brutal, realistic and shocking as this. Racism, suicide, rape, bullying are all explored in graphic detail. It doesn't make for comfortable viewing, and it's certainly not a film to watch if you're in a depressed, suicidal state. But it's a film that once you've watched, you'll never forget it.
