Watching James McAvoy act with an American accent is like seeing a porn movie made by eunuchs. That could have been passed over if he had good lines to say, of course, but sadly he does not. Angelina Jolie broods her way through another flick - in fact, her performance is so lacking in personality I wonder if Lara Croft finally escaped from the game and filled in for a few extra bucks. Morgan Freeman reprises his role from Chain Reaction, which wasn't a great flick to start with, let alone with 12 years sitting on its back like a demented monkey. I read that the director made Night Watch, and is known for his vampire flicks. I hated that movie, and after watching this I felt like I'd been drained of all life, so that makes sense. May he never make another English language film again.

In this movie you feel as if you could reach out and touch him across the table from you in today's world, let alone across 50 years of time. The film is also notable for it's incredibly relevant commentary on life, war and love generally - a movie for our times, even if it is 50 years old!

Neither of the actors seems sure of who their character is supposed to be: Depp swings from Willy Wonka gestures to Edward Scissorhands pathos, and Jolie appears to have been drugged to secure her participation. The plot is likewise unsure of itself, and not nearly as self-aware as, say, a Bond flick (yes, I did say that), to be able to benefit from swinging from romance to comedy to spy-flick. These flaws are surprising given the very strong direction that Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck displayed in his excellent Oscar-winning film 'The Lives of Others'. Still, with Paris and Venice being two of the 'sets', and the general appeal of both actors, it manages to be enjoyable.

Manville provides a compelling portrait of a very vulnerable and needy person, in a performance that is so believable. Itâ(TM)s in her performance I think Leighâ(TM)s improvisational and collaborative style of script development really shines. The filmâ(TM)s pace can be quite challenging at times â" it is rewarding in some areas, and frustrating in others, and this inconsistency is what drags the film away from being truly excellent.

The half star is just for using Leonard Cohen songs in the soundtrack â" I can only assume Leonard agreed to this because (a) he had just been ripped off by his manager of all his money, (b) he was seriously under the influence, or (c) both of the above.
