Intacto - R Very cool! I always forget the name of this movie, but I remember it quite often, regarding its treatment of luck as a finite, rival resource -- an interesting approach, indeed. It's very much worth watching, so... do it! April 30, 2010

Up in the Air - R It wasn't spectacular as the critics led me to believe, but I was enjoyable enough for me not to feel I wasted my money... February 21, 2010

Avatar - PG-13 First, the good things: the 3D. Oh boy, I've never felt so immersed in a movie! very well done... I think that if they had a panoramic screen, it would provide an incredibly believable experience! Also, the story is great, and being a science fiction one (even though it's a drama a la Cameron = not my type) makes it very compelling to me. I didn't like that some aspects of the backstory weren't developed, but I know they were left for the sequels :) Now, the bad thing: I don't think this movie needed so many sugarcoat or clichés to make it work so well. Ok, I understand the typical leader speech, and the military guy, bud did he really have to be so impulsive to be dislikable? And many other details like this that I won't bother you with. One thing I can't left out is the sex scene... come on, such a great opportunity to use that direct connection they have, and they miss it? Or if it was there, it was barely visible... anyway, the experience was great and I'd watch it again... if I have nothing better to do in a sunday afternoon :P January 8, 2010

The Brothers Bloom - PG-13 It's a good movie, fun and entertaining, but the plot was too convoluted, with many twists, and didn't become crystal-clear in the end, with all pieces coming together as a puzzle. I enjoyed it, but it could've been better. November 8, 2009

Up - PG The general impression I got is that they had to rush things after they were midway into production; the original idea, story arcs and animation are great, but the pace could have some more work, and there were some loose ends.

E.g., what happens with the kid's father? He is said to once have been enthusiastic with his son's activities, but got colder -- due to divorce? widowhood, perhaps? -- they could do a nice arc by making him the businessman, but they chose to introduce him gradually throughout the movie and then ignore him at the ending.

Or Charles Muntz, who got bitter after being widely criticized despite his enthusiasm for exploration, couldn't there have a redemption for him too? The only character who finishes the journey to become a better person is Carl!

And there were some scenes that simply didn't need to be so harsh (the infamous blood scene, the old man dying by falling from the zeppelin, the dogs brutally chasing the bird, etc.).

Overall, I didn't regret watching it, but I left the cinema thinking that this had the potential to be more.

The Nightmare Before Christmas - PG Amazing! a fun and compelling story, told in a delightful and engaging way. A masterpiece, very well-achieved, with a superb technical execution. August 23, 2009

The Astronaut's Wife - R A good, entertaining movie, but what can I say... I hate endings where the bad guy wins. August 3, 2009

The Man from Earth - Unrated Wonderful, a masterpiece! A very stimulating intellectual exercise, filled with fast-paced, clever comments and some unexpected twists... and above all a fascinating premise. Undoubtedly an instant favorite for me. August 3, 2009

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - PG-13 Even though it was a long book, with over two hours of screen time, I expected the movie to be quite better. It ended up being a series of scenes put together, for the most part. Also, the most dramatic parts hardly touched me. Definitely could've been better. July 30, 2009

Annie Hall - PG I've heard and read so much about this movie, but when I finally got to watch it, I couldn't help but thinking "Is this it?". Of course when the expectations are high it's easy to get disappointed, but... I only had about five laughs the whole film, and though it's entertaining and interesting, I fail to see how it can be such a landmark. Maybe I'm looking at a 70s movie through the eyes of a 21st century moviegoer... July 30, 2009

Hard Candy - R The movie is technically great (even though the close-up shots made me feel a bit dizzy for the first minutes) but I ultimately I didn't like it. I hate open-ended movies, and this one left quite a bit of loose ends untied.

It's intense. It's disturbing. It's sick. But I couldn't put it in better words than Mick LaSalle, who reviewed it for sfgate.com:

"If Jeff is a monster, we neither see it nor know it and therefore can't enjoy his distress. Indeed, in the normal terms of a thriller, Hayley is the monster, and yet we must watch her with no hope or expectation of her destruction."

But hey, I guess it will please people who enjoy psychological thrillers. Apparently, I'm not one of those.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona - PG-13 The movie is a little too scripted, and the narration is part of that. But the theme and story are fascinating, nevertheless. It makes one wonder and challenge the commonly accepted standards about love and relationship, which is great. Of course, one couldn't expect less from Woody Allen :) June 28, 2009

American Gangster - R Amazing, fantastic! one of the greatest movies I've watched so far. The ending was perfect (not too sugarcoated, not too dramatic), and the best of all is that this is a true story! Of course it was dramatized for the movie, but what true storie isn't?

I reccomend watching this interview: http://www.charlierose.com/view/interview/8767 with the real Frank and Ritchie, after the movie was released.

Sweet November - PG-13 It was cool, but I don't like unhappy endings. We already have life itself to bring us to reality :P movies should cheer us up instead. Of course, that's just my opinion and taste. That said, if you like dramas, you'll probably enjoy this. June 7, 2009

Quantum of Solace - PG-13 Not brilliant, but also not as bad as I thought it could be, though, after reading many bad reviews. On a side note: the plot was way too easy to solve. A fairly entertaining movie, I'd say. Didn't waste my time, but wouldn't watch it again. May 27, 2009

Angels & Demons - PG-13 Quite good. I obviously liked the book better but I guess they did a good job in putting it into movie form. However, I think the assassinations of the earth and fire cardinals was a bit more brutal than needed... But it might be just religious bias. And I'm an agnostic! :P Oh and the explosion of antimatter was very nicely done, too :) May 17, 2009

Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny - R After listening to their songs for a while, it was nice to see those getting together like a puzzle in the movie. It was better than I expected, but the ending caught me on surprise. I expected the story to continue to cover some songs and end some story arcs (such as Tribute and Lee)... perhaps a second movie for soon? I hope so :) May 17, 2009
