American Beauty 1999,  R)
American Beauty
[Updated review]

American Beauty is my all time favourite movie. It is because it is really good at making you look at things from another perspective.

Kevin Spacey delivered an awesome performance of Lester Burnham, a father and employee trapped by his wife and job. The way his character evolved over the duration of the film is spectacular, funny, and thought-provoking. Over the time of a year he transforms from a depressive, broken man to an energetic, happy father, initially in a quest to have a chance of having sex with his daughter's friend.

During that period of a year, other life-changing things happen to his daughter and wife. This all leads to a complex knot of characters at the end of the film, where Lester finds his death.

A brilliant movie. I've watched it tens of times, and it keeps leaving a strong impression on me. If you didn't like it, look closer...

The Nightmare Before Christmas 1993,  PG)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
I had heard about this movie a lot of times, but I never really got around to watching it. I'm not a fan of Tim Burton, although he did make some good movies. Now that I've finalyl seen this movie, I find it a shame I've only discovered this gem recently.

Because truly, this movie is a masterpiece! Tim Burton has created a very interesting universe in which towns represent holidays. The story takes place in Halloween Town, where Jack Skellington is the master architect of each year's halloween. In spite of delivering very good work, Jack is unhappy and aspires to something more. By accident he discovers one of the other towns: Christmas Town, where he is inspired for the next year's Halloween.

It is a very entertaining story, beatifully crafted in clay and guided by music and songs. As far as I know, this production is unique - unless you can point me to another original fairy-tale musical in clay..?

It goes without saying that I have awarded this movie 5/5 stars. I really can't see what would have made it better. This movie offers an intersting plot, a funny setting, hilarious characters and great songs.

Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
The ultimate feel-good experience in a beautiful setting. A magnificent movie.
4
Memento 2000,  R)
Memento
Complex antichronological movie, not for the faint of mind. It's plot twisting fun, a mystery that you must piece together yourself.
5
American History X 1998,  R)
American History X
Racial hate and its flaws in a nutshell. I'd recommend it as a must see for school youth.
6
Braveheart 1995,  R)
Braveheart
Historical epic of love, war and friendship. Mel Gibson's pinnacle.
7
Delicatessen 1991,  R)
Delicatessen
A post-apocalyptic surrealist black comedy. An out of work clown accepts a job from a landlord who is also the local butcher. Little does he know that the butcher always kills his temporary employee and distributes the meat (which is scarce) among his usual tenants, who all have hilarious character traits.

The Green Mile 1999,  R)
The Green Mile
Very moving, but maybe the magic should have been replaced by something more down-to-earth.
9
The Matrix 1999,  R)
The Matrix
One of the most invigorating movies of the last decade. A unique science fiction story portrayed beautifully.
10
The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1996,  G)
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
I think this is my favourite non-digitally animated Disney film. I love the gold-hearted Quasimodo, but best of this Disney musical I like the songs! The "Hellfire" song is brutal! ^.^
11
Starship Troopers 1997,  R)
Starship Troopers
Pretty awesome movie. Totalitarian future, intergalactic war, the scary-as-shit arachnoids, space combat, ground combat, apocalyptic catastrophies on earth ... Great science fiction. I really need to read the novel because of course, the movie can't be better than that. :-) I keep rewatching this movie time after time, so that's why I've rated it five stars.
12
Forrest Gump 1994,  PG-13)
13
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
When Jim Carrey plays a serious role you are presented a whole other person. This fantasy romance takes you on a surrealist journey through the memories of a man who decided to erase his loved one from his mind, but changes his mind in the process.
14
The City of Lost Children (La Cité des Enfants Perdus) 1997,  R)
The City of Lost Children (La Cité des Enfants Perdus)
So far all the French movies I've seen were great, and this was no exception. On the contrary, this has instantly become one of my favourites! A truly unique futurist surrealist fairytale reminiscent of Delicatessen - entailing hilarious characters: a scientist gone mad, six clones plus the original, a midget, an evil siamese twin and a brain in a fishtank. What more can you ask for?
15
Jacob's Ladder 1990,  R)
Jacob's Ladder
One of the more subtle horror movies out there, and because of it I think it is one of the greatest. Actually, it's more like a blend of mystery, fantasy and horror, but who cares. Over the years I've come to appreciate this film more over the years, and that's why it deserves five stars.
16
Cast Away 2000,  PG-13)
17
V for Vendetta 2006,  R)
V for Vendetta
Rebellion against a totalitarian system with style: What more can you ask for? Seriously, this film is so very, very good.

Pan's Labyrinth 2006,  R)
Pan's Labyrinth
I was disappointed at it's end, I wanted to see more!
22
The Fall 2006,  R)
The Fall
Have a suicidal patient tell a bed-time fable to another hospitalized little girl whose father was murdered. This story offers one of the most visually stunning landscapes in the fantasy world concocted by the story-teller. A fantasy story underlined with darkness as it is a trick to get the little girl to help with committing suicide. Although I think it could have been a better psychological labyrinth, The Fall is still simply a wonderously beautiful movie to look at - and one must compliment the director for being able to have this movie look positively surreal, having filmed at locations in 18 different countries.
23
What Dreams May Come 1998,  PG-13)
What Dreams May Come
One of my favourites with Robin Williams. Very moving and visually appealing movie.
24
The Man from Earth 2007,  Unrated)
The Man from Earth
Wonderfully thought provoking. A really brilliant movie that shows what power a movie can have without it being cluttered with CGI and other effects. This movie takes place in a cabin, and is a 90 minute dialogue between a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychiater and some other people.

The main character tells his friends he has been alive for 14000 years. An interesting analytical debate follows with his collegues who try to figure out whether there could be truth to his story or whether he is simply crazy or on drugs. Our cro-magnon tells his friends that he will leave them, as he always does to hide the fact that he does not age.

A very interesting conversation ensues that touches on ancient culture, customs, what life must be like for the main character, wisdom, religion, faith, and the meaning of it all. It is a really good movie and it deserves to be seen, even though the acting isn't spectacular. It is simply a very interesting concept for which this movie is a good medium.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring
Absolutely one of my favourites. A tranquil movie in a beautiful setting. A pupil and his master are isolated from the rest of the world, until an ill woman seeks out the master for healing and awakens the young man's desires.
28
Johnny Got His Gun 1971,  PG)
Johnny Got His Gun
A disturbing movie of a young soldier who stepped on a landmine and lost his arms, legs, mouth, nose and ears and has become an subject of study at the hospital, the doctors thinking he is braindead. However, he is alive and conscious, and vast amounds of pondering and inner thought go by as he tries to communicate his wish of dying to the people "out there". Must see!
