Night Watch (Nochnoi Dozor) 2004,  R)
Night Watch (Nochnoi Dozor)
it's the age old story of good versus evil, light versus darkness. what makes this story worth watching are writer/director, timur bekmambetov, views on the subject. this is the first installment of his "epic trilogy". here we get glimpses of how the battle began; and what the night watch is doing to protect the world from being taken over by the dark others in current times. the "others" are humans, living among us, who have extraordinary powers. such as witches, vampires and shape shifters. each other must choose, of his own free will, to serve either the light or the dark. to this day the battle continues to be tied, but legend tells of a powerful child that will tip the odds to one side or the other.

i believe anyone who watches the trailer will be enticed to see this movie. i know i couldn't wait. and it almost lived up to all my expectations. the details in the story itself are quite original. the action sequences, while fewer than i expected, had me holding my breath. i thought that the special effects and camera work were very clean and visually stunning. and last but not least the soundtrack rocks. the only aspect that i found to be a bit dodgy was the acting. but that could be due to the fact that i was watching a version dubbed into english. (it was originally filmed in russian. i had decided to forgo the subtitles, in fear that i would miss some of the action while trying to read.)

i have to say i'd recommend this movie to anyone with a taste for gothic, fantasy and/or action flicks. i'm really looking forward to the next two installments, and whatever else russia might contribute to hollywood in the future.

Black Snake Moan 2007,  R)
Black Snake Moan
This movie rocks!!! Literally, it's got one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a very long time. And surprisingly most of its sung by Samuel L. Jackson himself. The music in this film reminded me of this little hole-in-the-wall club I use to hang at in Santa Monica. They had live blues every night of the week; and I often found myself making the hour long drive to sit with an apple martini and listen to some of the greatest music ever played.

But besides all that; Black Snake Moan has made it onto my top favorites list. This movie tells the story of an abused girl who can only find peace through sex; and an old somewhat religious man who thinks he can cure her of her evil ways. And while the film is very camp in the old 70?s exploitation way, it still holds up to today's standards without coming off silly in the least. A feat credited to the writing and direction of Craig Brewer; and the acting of Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci.
