Across the Universe
If any band's musical footprint could sum up the human condition, it would be The Beatles. This film does an amazing job of showing the range of emotions in these songs by following a young couple through their journey of love and life. This is a modern day musical done right. It is engaging and romantic with beautiful cinematography. It does the music justice, and that's saying a lot from me, because I generally hate Beatles covers. The film does a great job of weaving a plot around The Beatle's lyrics. You get to watch a young couple take a journey through the most dynamic time of the 20th century and watch how the characters and their relationship is molded by the world around them. I felt almost as if The Beatles wrote these songs for this movie by the end of it. The casting is perfect, and I'm so glad they didn't go for really famous actors. It was so much more believable with fresh faces. And please, no more Moulin Rouge comparisons. I loathe that film.

Adaptation 2002,  R)
Adaptation
This movie is a clever film about... well, it can't be summed up in a few sentences. The preview for the movie is absurd & I think that's either the sign of a great movie or a horrible movie. Luckily, in this case Adaptation is so ingenious and complex it defies a synopsis. This is a superb story written by screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. Kaufman is one like Tarantino used to be, but he's got neuroses instead of attitude.

American Beauty 1999,  R)
American Beauty
So many people have said so many wonderful things about this film. Therefore, I will keep it short. It's the ultimate dark comedy and deserving of all the critical acclaim it got. It features an all-star cast, a great script and beautiful cinematography.

Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) 2001,  R)
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
The most charming movie ever made.
5
Being John Malkovich 1999,  R)
Being John Malkovich
Pure genius.
6
Big 1988,  PG)
Big
This movie represents everything that was good about my childhood, except that I was a girl. That doesn't even make any sense?! Don't listen to me.
7
The Big Lebowski 1998,  R)
The Big Lebowski
I really love the character, "The Dude," played by Jeff Bridges. It centers around a lazy, not-so-smart dude who finds himself in the middle of a really big problem. Will he rise to the challenge and become the hero? Not on this list by the Coen Brothers - Raising Arizona, Hudsucker Proxy, Blood Simple and Barton Fink.
8
The Breakfast Club 1985,  R)
The Breakfast Club
If I ever get in that nostalgic "I love the 80s" mood, this is my go-to movie.
9
Clueless 1995,  PG-13)
Clueless
I don't care what anyone says. This movie is brilliant!
10
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
It was definitely one of the best movies I've seen in a while. The performances are great, and the story is good. It was a great sequel.
11
Election 1999,  R)
Election
This movie is so great. I didn't know Matthew Broderick could do dark comedy until I saw this movie. Reese Witherspoon plays her part to the tee. It satarizes the silly politics that goes on in high school. Even the teachers - who are supposed to be adult role models - get caught up in the juvenile games.
12
Empire of the Sun 1987,  PG)
Empire of the Sun
The best movie Speilberg ever made that no one has ever heard of.
13
Gone With the Wind 1939,  G)
Gone With the Wind
Wow. This movie blows me away. I know it's long, but it is so worth the time to watch. Clark Gable is entrancing and Vivian Leigh is mesmerizing. They are the quintessential movie stars. The film combines a great love story, a great tragedy, a historical masterpiece and a lesson about life. One of the few movies that lives up to its literary counterpart.
14
GoodFellas 1990,  R)
GoodFellas
Say what you will about the Godfather trilogy. This is my favorite mafia movie of all time. It hasn't yet reached the classic status that Godfather has, but it will some day. The performances are flawless and this movie is so intense. I love it.
15
Grease 1978,  PG)
Grease
I am a female. The love of Grease is encoded into our DNA.
16
The Ice Storm 1997,  R)
The Ice Storm
Thoroughly underrated film. A cutting satire and deeply sad portrayal of the dark side of the American Dream.
17
Kissing Jessica Stein 2002,  R)
Kissing Jessica Stein
Hilarious and poignant film about the search for true love and the search for oneself, focused around the New York City dating scene. To call it a romantic comedy seems like an insult. It is one of the smartest comedies I've ever seen. Do not miss it!
18
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
It doesn't get much better than this. Or longer.
19
The Matrix 1999,  R)
The Matrix
Keanu in black leather. Oh, and the movie is good too.
20
Napoleon Dynamite 2004,  PG)
Napoleon Dynamite
Sometimes I feel like a liger.
21
O Brother, Where Art Thou? 2000,  PG-13)
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Coen Brothers. Plus great music. Enough said!
22
Pan's Labyrinth 2006,  R)
Pan's Labyrinth
The most breathtaking film I've seen in years. I could not take my eyes off the screen.
23
Raging Bull 1980,  R)
Raging Bull
What a classic. This is my favorite DeNiro movie of all time. He shines so brightly in this movie that it's hard to notice anything else. However, the story is great, the directing (Scorsese) is great and the editing (I know - who watches a movie for the editing?) is fantastic. If you haven't seen the Jake LaMotta classic, pick it up!
24
Raising Arizona 1987,  PG-13)
Raising Arizona
It isn't just a great comedy, it's a great movie.
25
Rear Window 1954,  PG)
Rear Window
I adore Grace Kelly and Jimmy Stewart in this movie together. There are no great screen pairs like that anymore. The movie is suspenseful in a psychological way. It may seem somewhat primitive to today's sophisticated viewers, but try to imagine it in its time.
26
The Shawshank Redemption 1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
This is such an inspiring and heart wrenching tale. Tim Robbins is magnificent. I love every second of this film.
27
Singin' in the Rain 1952,  G)
Singin' in the Rain
Gene Kelly at his best. This movie is so amazing. Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds light up the screen. The best scene from a musical *ever* is Gene Kelly dancing in the rain. I heard that he even had a temperature of 102 when they shot that scene. He's amazing. Again, there are no actors like him today. Musicals aren't hip and dancing isn't seen as masculine anymore. So tragic.
28
West Side Story 1961,  PG)
West Side Story
I love musicals, and this is one of the best. Bring the tissues.
29
When Harry Met Sally 1989,  R)
When Harry Met Sally
Billy Crystal at his least annoying and Meg Ryan at her absolute cutest. They balance each other out in a way that's beautiful and synergistic- both the characters and the actors.
30
Wizard of Oz 1925,  Unrated)
Wizard of Oz
Judy Garland is just a wee pup in this classic. She was so great. This isn't just a kid's movie. If you haven't seen it in a while, rent it. You'll be surprised how great it is when you watch it as an adult.
