My Favorite Movies

Moulin Rouge! 2001,  PG-13)
Moulin Rouge!
One of my favorite movies of all time. The singing, the dancing, the director, the colors, the life, the main actors and actresses... I just love it all.
2
Romeo + Juliet 1996,  PG-13)
Romeo + Juliet
I adore Baz Luhrmann. I love that this is how Shakespeare was meant to be: current. I still want to be Claire Danes as Juliet for Halloween with my Romeo (and yes, I was thirteen or so when I fell in love with this movie).
3
Across the Universe 2007,  PG-13)
Across the Universe
Julie Taymor is another of my all-time favorites. She seems to have such a different way of looking at the world. I love it. Just visually stunning. Titus was my first introduction to her, but who can resist singing along when watching this movie? I heartily wish I could actually sing...

Titus 1999,  R)
Titus
My favorite revenge story of all time. I have to be in the right mood to see this, but when I am, it is glorious. The colors, the violence, the acting, the superb melding of present-day or futuristic elements with the sublime rhythm of Shakespeare's writing and the historical elements... I am in awe of Julie Taymor.

Transformers 2007,  PG-13)
Transformers
I. Loved. This. Movie. I saw it twice in theatres. And I still have no idea why I love it so much. The music and John Turturro have quite a bit to do with it, Shia LaBeouf was extremely likeable as Sam, and Megan Fox is hot, but I still like the movie much more than just the sum of its parts. I'm a little bit ashamed to admit that I get teary-eyed every single time Mikaela helps Bumblebee toward the end. The action, the humor, and the surprising heart in the movie make it, oddly enough, probably one of my favorites.

Sleepy Hollow 1999,  R)
Sleepy Hollow
This might be my favorite Johnny Depp movie. Of course Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are one of my, if not the, favorite film collaborators (that sounds much better in French). I love pretty much everything about this film. Johnny Depp's Ichabod is so adorably stubborn and determined to prove everything scientifically in spite of the mystical/magical forces at work, their lingering role in his own past, and his resulting vulnerability. I find the humor in this movie to be particularly appealing. Who wouldn't love getting to squirt Johnny Depp in the eye and splatter him with copious amounts of fake blood multiple times (and I mean that in the nicest way possible)?

Devdas 2002,  PG)
Devdas
I hated this movie the first time I saw it. I had just gotten back from somewhere--out of the country I think... and I watched this from around 2:30 AM to 5:30 AM before finally going to sleep. I was kind of stunned at the end. I think I watched it for the second time the next day and absolutely loved it. I have yet to find someplace (not online) to buy it, but I hope to have the soundtrack very soon. I think I might even like this better than Lagaan, the very first Bollywood film I ever saw.

Lagaan - Once Upon a Time in India 2001,  PG)
Lagaan - Once Upon a Time in India
This was my very first Bollywood film experience, thanks to Mr. P in high school. It will remain one of my favorites, though I rarely ever feel the need to watch the entire cricket game anymore. I still listen to the soundtrack pretty frequently and always love it.

Everything is Illuminated 2005,  PG-13)
Everything is Illuminated
The first half of the movie never fails to crack me up--"welcome to Ukraine!" I adore Eugene Hutz and Gogol Bordello and the music in general from this movie! I'm always reminded of how I must have sounded to my Moroccan brothers :) And Sammy Davis Jr. Jr.--the "officious seeing eye bitch!" Elijah Wood's not bad either. The second half of the movie is too sad for me to watch every time, but I wouldn't have it any other way. This is one of those odd cases for me where I definitely liked the movie better than the book (then again, I did see the movie first and often that influences my feelings).

Eddie Izzard - Dress to Kill 1999,  Unrated)
Eddie Izzard - Dress to Kill
I love Eddie Izzard. I have seen virtually nothing else of his, except for him in Across the Universe, but Dress to Kill was fantastic. Ciao!

Ever After: A Cinderella Story 1998,  PG-13)
Ever After: A Cinderella Story
An unusual and lovely version of the Cinderella fairy tale. Angelica Huston is delightful as the "evil stepmother," and Melanie Lynskey is a sweet and funny "sad blister," as the Rindercella version of the tale would say. Every time Da Vinci says "she's your match, Henry" (or something like that... it's been a while since I've actually seen the film), oddly enough I think of the Friends episode where Phoebe (?) says that Rachel is Ross' "lobster." I love this movie.
12
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium 2007,  G)
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium
What a surprising and lovely film! I had no idea what I was in for when I went to see this movie. I think it was a Wednesday morning dollar deal for kids in the summer and my sister and I saw it... why? on a whim? because of Natalie Portman and Dustin Hoffman? I'm not really sure... But I absolutely loved it! The whimsy! The music! The saturated colors! Jason Bateman (this was the first time I really discovered him)! Zach Mills! Zach Helm! One of the best surprise finds of my life, I think...
13
V for Vendetta 2006,  R)
V for Vendetta
I really love the music in this film. And that it's based on a comic book (er, graphic novel)--and looks it. The acting is fantastic, and I can never help but be totally emotionally invested, particularly from when Valerie becomes involved on. Of course, the acting and the storyline don't hurt a bit.
