Fried Green Tomatoes 1991,  PG-13)
Fried Green Tomatoes
Fabulous film. Brilliant performances and just a mesmerising story. This was one I genuinely went to see at the cinema at least 7 times, and I cried at the end each time! Mary Stuart Masterson deserved to be a huge star...shame it never quite happened for her.
2
The Sound of Music 1965,  G)
The Sound of Music
A perfect film! You can sing along with everything, laugh at the children dressed in curtains, go "eeeww!" when Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer kiss, boo the nazis and cheer the nuns! Classic.
3
Contact 1997,  PG)
Contact
Love the science, love Jodie as the scientist, love Rob Lowe's laryngitis! The opening is brilliant, and its an all round perfect film for science nuts. Matthew McConaughy is the only slight oddity in an intriguing bunch of characters.
4
Passion Fish 1992,  R)
Passion Fish
One of my very favourites, as a huge Mary McDonnell fan. Wonderful characterisations, and a real sense of place as May Alice moves back home after being paralysed in a car accident. McDonnell was rightly oscar nominated. "I didn't ask for the anal probe..."
5
Singin' in the Rain 1952,  G)
Singin' in the Rain
Absolute classic! It still stands up today as a very funny film - props to Jean Hagen who is hilarious! I could have done with a little less Gene Kelly dance numbers, but the title song really is iconic, and best of all, its such a fun film. Brilliant.
6
Muriel's Wedding 1994,  R)
Muriel's Wedding
Breakouts for two fantastic actresses, Griffiths and Colette are wonderful in this funny yet heartbreaking comedy. Love it!
7
Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991,  R)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Classic action film that is even better than the first. Arnie is perfectly cast, and I love the new pumped up if slightly psychotic Sarah Connor! So many great sequences, and Robert Patrick is a chilling baddie.
8
Monty Python's Life of Brian 1979,  R)
Monty Python's Life of Brian
By far the funniest of the Python films. So many classic bits, and just a funny film!
9
Miss Congeniality 2000,  PG-13)
Miss Congeniality
Yes I know it's bubblegum and throwaway, but I really enjoyed this fun comedy. Sandra Bullock and Michael Caine are a hoot together.
10
Truly, Madly, Deeply 1991,  PG)
Truly, Madly, Deeply
Love this film, although its quite stagey, and not quite sure about all the men considering Juliet Stevenson so beautiful! Funny and touching, but occasionally annoyingly twee (HATE Michael Maloney and his hopping!) Rickman and Stevenson are great.
11
King Kong 2005,  PG-13)
King Kong
I soooo wish Peter Jackson had cut out about 30 minutes at the start, (everything with Jamie Bell for a start) as this film is slow to get going. However, allthe stuff with the CGI Kong is amazing. I also thought Naomi Watts did a fabulous job of acting against a CGI creature. Very touching story with brilliant effects. Kong vs the T Rexes is a triumph of SFX
12
Mulholland Drive 2001,  R)
Mulholland Drive
Naomi Watts is mesmerising, in Lynch's most enjoyable film for years. Remember, the whole thing is just going on in seedy Naomi's head...
13
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long) 2003,  PG-13)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long)
One of the most beautiful films ever, this one loses a fair bit on TV unfortunately. Wonderful central performances from Michelle Yeoh, Chow Yun Fat and Ziyi Zhang, haunting score, amazing action. Brilliant film.
14
Dances With Wolves 1990,  PG-13)
Dances With Wolves
Was all set to hate this film, but it is brilliant. You don't notice the hours at all. Top stuff.
15
L.A. Confidential 1997,  R)
L.A. Confidential
Absolutely superb thriller that made Russell Crowe a star. Great atmosphere, brilliant performances.
16
High Art 1998,  R)
High Art
Bleak but beautiful. Especially good soundtrack. Mitchell and Sheedy shine, Clarkson just about gets away with a Deitrich impersonation. A downbeat but fascinating film.
17
Tacones Lejanos (High Heels) 1991,  R)
Tacones Lejanos (High Heels)
My favourite Almodovar film that is often overlooked. As usual, its got loads of intrigue and sex, although goodness knows why a police inspector would pose as a drag queen! Victoria Abril is wonderful.
18
The Ring 2002,  PG-13)
The Ring
Great creepy thriller. Don't care about it being a remake, Naomi Watts and David Dorfman are great.
19
The Silence of the Lambs 1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
Great perfomances from Foster and Hopkins are what make this film, along with the exciting twisty script. Very tense and nerve wracking. Clarice and Lecter are two of the most memorable movie characters.
20
Persuasion 1995,  PG)
Persuasion
Beautifully adapted from Jane Austen's most subtle novel, this BBC film has brilliant performances all round. Lots of atmospheric candlelit scenes, and its only weakness is a rather daft circus parade that inexplicably occurs in the last 5 minutes.. weird. However, another example of the costume dramas the BBC does best.
21
Best in Show 2000,  PG-13)
Best in Show
Funniest of Chris Guest's mockumentaries that focusses on a bunch of dog show people. Great stuff.
22
Bridget Jones's Diary 2001,  R)
Bridget Jones's Diary
Perfect rom-com. Remember how worried people were about the casting? Zellweger is pitch perfect, as are Grant and Firth - all the cast actually. Sharp script, and a top notch girlie comedy. Brilliant.
23
Stop Making Sense 1984,  PG)
Stop Making Sense
I love the Talking Heads and this was them at their best captured on film
24
Copycat 1995,  R)
Copycat
Love Sigourney, Love Holly, would have LOVED to see the little and large of actresses standing next to each other! (About a foot difference in height.) This film is a slightly derivative but enjoyable thriller, featuring a great performance from Weaver as an agorophobic, alcoholic, paranoid criminologist.
25
The Purple Rose of Cairo 1985,  PG)
The Purple Rose of Cairo
Quite different from his other films to that point, the Purple Rose of Cairo is sweeter and less typically Woody Allen-ish. Loved the premise, and a sweet story.
26
Guys and Dolls 1955,  Unrated)
Guys and Dolls
One of my favourite musicals for the quality of the songs. OK so Brando can't really sing, but he smoulders as Sky Masterson. Sinatra is perfect and you just can't lose with these songs. Excellent stuff
27
Man on Fire 2004,  R)
Man on Fire
A really atmospheric, nighmarish revenge thriller, featuring brilliant performances from Washington and young Dakota Fanning. Love Tony Scott's trippy direction.
28
Strange Days 1995,  R)
Strange Days
Not well received, but I loved this bleak look at the future, with Kathryn Bigalow's trademark eye for a great chase scene (remember Point Break.) Juliette Lewis gets to pretend to be PJ Harvey and sing!
29
Walk the Line 2005,  PG-13)
Walk the Line
Never been a Cash fan, but I loved this movie. Witherspoon and Phoenix are excellent, and they even do their own singing! A touching love story, and great soundtrack.
30
Bound 1996,  R)
Bound
Great gangster thriller. Gina Gershon is a goddess! Hot stuff!
31
Fly Away Home 1996,  PG)
Fly Away Home
Very very sweet family drama featuing the talented youngster Anna Paquin, fresh from her Oscar in The Piano. The geese are a big draw, but this is a lovely film
32
Whale Rider 2002,  PG-13)
Whale Rider
A quite remarkable performance from Keisha Castle-Hughes is what lifts this NZ film into greatness. A touching drama with a fantastic kiddie actor.
33
The Truth About Cats & Dogs 1996,  PG-13)
The Truth About Cats & Dogs
Really nice light comedy, with good performances from the leads. Garofalo is cute, as are the cats and dogs!
34
The Manchurian Candidate 2004,  R)
The Manchurian Candidate
I love paranoid thrillers, and I love Denzel Washington. A great cast, and while the brain washing stuff was rather unbelievable, I managed to suspend my disbelief. Streep is outstandingly creepy, and Schreiber does a good job.
35
Sweet Home Alabama 2002,  PG-13)
Sweet Home Alabama
Reese is adorable, Dempsey and Lucas are gorgeous! Nice fun film.
36
A League of Their Own 1992,  PG)
A League of Their Own
Heartwarming comedy drama about a professional girls baseball team during the war. Good performances from a large ensemble cast. Madonna's best acting.
37
Spellbound 1945,  Unrated)
Spellbound
Its the Salvador Dali dream sequences people remember from this film, but I love Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck together. Great twisty thriller.
38
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2003,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
End of the magnificent trilogy.
39
The Aviator 2004,  PG-13)
The Aviator
Never been the biggest Leo fan, but he is really excellent here. As a big Hepburn AND Cate Blanchett fan, enjoyed her performance. Just a tad too long, but a great film.
40
Death and the Maiden 1994,  R)
Death and the Maiden
I've been dying to see this again as I caught it on TV years ago and loved it. Fabulous performances, and a really intriguing premise. What do you do if faced with someone you are sure is a monster? Isn't it your responsibility to bring them to some sort of justice?
41
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Enjoyed this one a lot, it looked amazing, the battle scenes were very well done.
42
Calamity Jane 1953,  G)
Calamity Jane
I wanted to BE Calamity Jane when I was a kid. Think it was the cute outfit - no not the dress! Doris Day is wonderful, Howard Keel has a gorgeous voice. Some great songs, although another musical with a weakish ending. Guess all anyone needs in their life is love...
43
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) 2001,  R)
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
Unique and magical, this is a wonderfully fey and fantastical comedy, that also is a bit of a love story to the city of Paris. Tautou is perfect and the story was really sweet and joyful! Not everyone's cup of tea, but I loved it.
44
Drop Dead Gorgeous 1999,  PG-13)
Drop Dead Gorgeous
Mockumentary about a beauty pageant that has a strong female cast and a decent performance from Kirsten Dunst (for once.) Makes me laugh a lot this one. Love Kirstie Alley, Ellen Barkin, Allison Janney and Denise Richards.
45
A Mighty Wind 2003,  PG-13)
A Mighty Wind
Hilarious, and some annoying hummable tunes too!
46
The Scarlet Pimpernel 1982,  Unrated)
The Scarlet Pimpernel
I keep catching PARTS of this on TV but still not sat down to watch it all in one go! Andrews is PERFECT as the Scarlet Pimpernel. Great casting. Enjoyed Ian McKellan as a baddie too. Good film.
