My Favorite Movies

  trakmasterz's Rating My Rating
1
Finding Neverland 2004,  PG)
Finding Neverland
This is possibly the most beautiful film I have ever seen. Like Mr Barrie says: Just Believe.
2
12 Angry Men (Twelve Angry Men) 1957,  Unrated)
12 Angry Men (Twelve Angry Men)
Extraordinary character development, wonderful performances and an exceptional script, one of my favourite films ever.
3
Phone Booth 2003,  R)
Phone Booth
I have seen this film so many times and I'm still on the edge of my seat every time. Farrell is awesome in this.
4
Batman Begins 2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
This film is astonishing, one of the greatest casts ever assembled on screen (taking out katie holmes, although she was good) and a fiercely talented director and lead actor.
5
On the Waterfront 1954,  Unrated)
On the Waterfront
This has the best performance I have ever seen in film (Marlon Brando). This has one of the best matched leads I have ever seen in film (Brando & Eva Marie Saint). It has a fantastic cinematographer at the helm (Boris Kaufman - 12 ANGRY MEN!) who creates an extremely dark world that Terry Malloy is part of. Lee J Cobb added to the frey make this an utter classic.
6
Taxi Driver 1976,  R)
Taxi Driver
Travis Bickle is one of the most interesting characters in the history of cinema. De Niro plays him as well as you possibly could.
7
Munich 2005,  R)
Munich
This is beautifully crafted entertainment, Spielberg using his mainstream appeal and adapting it for a different kind of audience perfectly. Bana is exceptional in this.
8
The Terminal 2004,  PG-13)
The Terminal
It's a Rom-com. But Tom Hanks is in it. And he did Sleepless in Seattle. And that is awesome. Guess what? This is even more awesome. Dunno what it is that elevates this above it's contemporaries and don't particularly care
9
The Machinist 2003,  R)
The Machinist
Not for everyone, this is a film of acquired taste, but I found it extremely interesting. It's multi-faceted, horrifying at times and fronted by an exceptionally layered performance by Bale. The twist at the end makes the film. Hitchcock-esque liquid chocolate.
10
Heat 1995,  R)
Heat
Just liquid chocolate in terms of cinematography (Mann is the man for a shot), Pacino & De Niro's first scene together is one of the best scenes in movie history in my opinion.
11
Rear Window 1954,  PG)
Rear Window
Hitchcock's finest moment. This is my favourite script as well as 12 Angry Men. Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly have great chemistry in this.
12
The Prestige 2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige
Called this as soon as I heard it was being made. The cast is fantastic. Just a pity about the ending (bloody studio). Will be put up to 5 stars when the director's cut is released.
13
A History of Violence 2005,  R)
A History of Violence
Mortensen transforms his character over the course of the film in the way that Pacino does with Michael Corleone in The Godfather. A very enjoyable film fronted by a beautifully subtle performance by Viggo Mortensen with extremely strong support from Maria Bello.
14
Seven (Se7en) 1995,  R)
Seven (Se7en)
This is as perfect as a film gets. Excellent suspense, one scene particularly scaring the crap out of me.
15
The Insider 1999,  R)
The Insider
Who said Al Pacino ever lost it? This is a beautifully crafted (as it is Michael Mann), and often moving, thriller. Russell Crowe is fantastic.
16
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada 2006,  R)
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
Beautifully constructed narrative. The chain of events shown is spot on. The performances are also exceptional, Barry Pepper the stand-out actor with a performance of great depth. The story is very original which makes it extremely fresh.
17
It's a Wonderful Life 1946,  G)
It's a Wonderful Life
Absolutely perfect. Restores your faith in humanity. Best Christmas movie ever.
18
American History X 1998,  R)
American History X
Excellent performances. Very dark and effective. Only hole I could possibly pick in this is the amount of slow motion shots. But that is being rather fussy.
19
The Deer Hunter 1978,  R)
The Deer Hunter
so beautiful. forget apocalypse now (even though it is excellent), THIS is the best vietnam film. My favourite Robert De Niro performance. Meryl Streep is wonderful in this and their chemistry just takes it to new levels. Beautifully shot, with a stand-out performance from Walken.
20
Blood Diamond 2006,  R)
Blood Diamond
I don't know if people realise just how significant this film is; I was deeply effected by it, if you're not you're just not human. The performances are of the highest quality, Hounsou captures the heart of the struggle, Di Caprio creates this extremely profound character and Connelly is as believable as you get in her role. Exceptional film.
21
Millions 2004,  PG)
Millions
Fantastic child performances, a far superior family film that has a really relevant message. It has a magical feel that borders on escapism, but staying within a familiar contemporary setting - that's hard to do. Hats off Boyle.
22
Running on Empty 1988,  PG-13)
Running on Empty
Extremely moving story. Reminds you just how good River Pheonix was becoming as an actor. He could have been one of the greatest in film history.
23
Serpico 1973,  R)
Serpico
Really can't pick what is my fave Al Pacino performance. He is probably the best in The Godfather, but I just empathise so much with Serpico that he sucked me into this film. It's very absorbing, if at times hard to watch.
24
Glengarry Glen Ross 1992,  R)
Glengarry Glen Ross
Good fun, great ensemble, try not to take it too seriously. 3rd best script I have ever read. Alec Baldwin is awesome.
25
L.A. Confidential 1997,  R)
L.A. Confidential
Slick, original, entertaining. I'm a big fan of all 3 of the leads (russell crowe, kevin spacey, guy pearce) so I knew I would like it, crowe stands out though for me. The complicated relationship between his character and kim basinger's is conveyed very well.
26
Finding Nemo 2003,  G)
Finding Nemo
Best animation ever.
27
The Hustler 1961,  Unrated)
The Hustler
Paul Newman is the ultimate movie star. Period. This is arguably his best character.
28
The Usual Suspects 1995,  R)
The Usual Suspects
Intriguing film, brilliantly shot, excellent performances, daring narrative.
29
True Romance 1993,  R)
True Romance
Excellent script, Slater and Arquette are great together, something is missing from this though. Such a great script would have been fantastic had the plot stood up with it. The scene between Walken & Hopper is some of the best stuff I have seen on celluloid though.
30
Harsh Times 2006,  R)
Harsh Times
I loved this. It's so pure, just two guys "in-between things" frittering days away. If it had just been that it may have got old. The story takes different turns, funny, moving & horrifying. The support is good and Bale creates a very interesting character (obviously, it's frigging christian bale).
31
The 39 Steps 1935,  PG)
The 39 Steps
Awesome suspense
32
The Bourne Identity 2002,  PG-13)
The Bourne Identity
Almost perfect, it is so entertaining and has some great action sequences in it.
33
A Bittersweet Life (Dalkomhan insaeng) 2005,  Unrated)
A Bittersweet Life (Dalkomhan insaeng)
So slick. So cool. Glamourising violence? Meh.
34
Sideways 2004,  R)
Sideways
This film is just beautiful. It hinges on an excellent script, great character development & spot-on performances to achieve it's 5 star status, and despite not being an epic tale with a location-a-minute, it still feels like a big journey. It's one you can watch over and over.
35
Lost In Translation 2003,  R)
Lost In Translation
A film like Sideways, it is an acquired taste, but if you are willing to buy into the slow pace of the film and embrace the characters, it becomes sumptuous. The cinematography is fantastic, it would have been a crime if the nightlife of tokyo wasn't depicted with outstanding beauty anyway; Coppola had a great pallette of colours to work with in the location the film is set.
36
Wedding Crashers 2005,  R)
Wedding Crashers
Absolutely loved it. Doesn't really boast an original bone in its body but who the hell cares when it's this much fun. One of my favourite comedy films.
37
Secret Window 2004,  PG-13)
Secret Window
Underrated because it recycles the "Jekyll & Hyde" personality, what the critics failed to realise was that old dogs can learn new tricks, or at least be better at the old tricks than its predecessors: this film proves that.
38
Gangs of New York 2002,  R)
Gangs of New York
A lot of people say it's flawed, but I don't know what those flaws are (don't tell me!) so I just love this film; the costumes, the setting, the fact it's Irish, the performances are superb (even Cameron Diaz) and the ending is beautiful.
39
Sleepless in Seattle 1993,  PG)
Sleepless in Seattle
Excellent light entertainment, Hanks is great at rom-coms.
40
Monster House 2006,  PG)
Monster House
Second best animation I have seen.... I think.
41
Withnail and I 1987,  R)
Withnail and I
The first half an hour is some of the most sharp comedy I have ever seen, it falls away towards the end unfortunately, but still a seminal film.
42
The Godfather 1972,  R)
The Godfather
This is sometimes hard to watch, but you have to appreciate just what genius it is. Al Pacino turns in one of the best performances in film history; the transformation of his character is so subtle it's scary.
43
Monsters, Inc. 2001,  G)
44
Fight Club 1999,  R)
45
Memento 2000,  R)
46
Cool Hand Luke 1967,  PG)
47
Evelyn 2002,  PG)
Evelyn
This film makes me cry more than most. Maybe I am overrating it, but I don't really care. Brosnan is a very good actor and he is extremely believable in this film that warms the ol' heart.
48
In America 2003,  PG-13)
In America
This film is just extraordinary, some people won't get it but I think it is exceptional film-making. The child performances are among the best I have seen and Djimon Hounsou is absorbing.
49
The Legend of Bagger Vance 2000,  PG-13)
The Legend of Bagger Vance
It's corny, but I loved that. Will Smith might be miscast, but I still think he was really good. It's all about the heart.....and the golf.
50
American Psycho 2000,  R)
American Psycho
Great fun. Such a great story could have achieved a 5 star, but it is a more than satisfying slice of entertainment.
51
Psycho 1998,  R)
Psycho
Scary shit, Hitchcock is indeed the hound's testicles.
52
Casino Royale 2006,  PG-13)
Casino Royale
His name is Bond. James Bond. So get used to it you Moore-whores (obviously it's Connery & Brosnan most people like, but Moore rhymes with whore so..).
53
Double Indemnity 1944,  Unrated)
Double Indemnity
This is the ultimate film noir. These type of films are sometimes deemed as outdated, but I hate that term. If they were awesome in their time, you just have to use a bit of imagination to allow yourself to be consumed by these "outdated" elements.
54
Serendipity 2001,  PG-13)
Serendipity
It's not a 4 star film in terms of quality, but the two leads are charming and it's a great bit of light entertainment. Idyllic, you might call it, but I like that.
55
The Wedding Singer 1998,  PG-13)
56
Brighton Rock 1947,  Unrated)
57
Mr. Deeds Goes to Town 1936,  Unrated)
58
The Window 1949,  Unrated)
59
Miller's Crossing 1990,  R)
60
On Golden Pond 1981,  PG)
61
Gladiator 2000,  R)
Gladiator
Epic. Extremely effective piece.
