talk about tragic sense of life. this is one of the most pathetic stories on film. if not for the fantasy element i can't see anyone would've backed this. it is del toro's most moving and affective film. despite the omniscient tone of the narrator he is simply relaying the protagonist's fiction which makes the whole thing that much more devastating.

newman's very good as a disaffected "war hero"/existentialist who finally gets the real freedom he seeks when he's shot by the sunglass-wearing boss. there is no rhyme or reason and as much justification to do as not to do. perhaps that's the reason for his smile at the end.

An Unreasonable Man
terrific doc. i love how certain liberals want to crucify him for running for president. these are the same liberals that decry bush and bushies for their fascistic tendencies. and the deleted scene describing the meeting between nader and the congressional black caucus is, well, outrageous. the movie is a great examination of one of the finest americans ever, flaws and all, and of the changing nature of politics and democracy in this country. well done.
