Die Hard 1988,  R)
Die Hard
...The original badass action movie Yippe Ki-yay! Bruce WIllis puts on an awesome performance here. John McClane is the ultimate unlikely, badass hero. This is the role that made Willis a legend. He has countless comical lines, awesome action sequences and a great cast to work with. From Alguy the limo driver, to Hans Gruber the german terrorist, this movie has some great characters.

The mixture of serious danger and comedy is just right. A scene that highlights this well was when McClane kills a terrorist and then writes on his shirt, "Now I have a machine gun, HO, HO, HO" :) This is the best action movie of them all.

Back to the Future 1985,  PG)
Back to the Future
A family sci-fi film that i've watched for years. For a 1980s film, the effects are great and it doesn't look very dated. it's not hard to understand the time travel but it's enough different gadgets and words like flux capacitor to keep you interested. There's some great funny scenes, mostly anything with Biff or George McFly in it. (Your shoes untied - don't be so gullible Mcfly, make like a tree and get out of here, Milk,,,chocolate, Darth Vader said he'd melt my brain)

The cast are perfect for the film and the ending builds up to a suspenseful climax as Marty tries to get home. He's extremely likeable as a character and easy to relate to, in contrast to Doc brown who is a good character because we don't know much about him except that he's enthusiastic about his invention and he has a good friendship with Marty.

The scene where Marty plays guitar at the dance is really iconic and shot really well and is one of my favourite scenes.

Withnail and I 1987,  R)
Withnail and I
This is the first film i've seen with Paul McGann in that wasn't that awful Doctor Who movie. He proves through this film that with a decent script, he's a good actor! The other dude played by Richard E Grant was so funny! He reminded me of Rik from The Young Ones. The characters had such an interesting dynamic between them that I had to keep watching. I'd like to see this again, it was a very entertaining film with some werid and amusing, well written scenes. It is what it is...I can't tihnk of anything that could have made it better really, without changing the point of the film.

Forrest Gump 1994,  PG-13)
Forrest Gump
A film which could be classed as so many genres. It has comedy, emotional scenes, war and pure violence. The only down side is the length of the film, and the slow pace it sometimes exhibits. (Maybe in the new year scenes).

It's easy to follow Forrest on his journey through life and laugh at the bizarre situations he finds himself in, like telling the president that he needed to pee.Even some of the scenes going to war are comic, with thanks to the character of Bubba and his many shrimp recipes. On the other hand, there's lots of morals and serious issues such as Jenny's death from (presumably) aids. All of these story-lines are tackled well in a short space of time.

The child actors playing Jenny and Forest were very good, mainly in the scene where Jenny prays to turn into a bird and fly away. That's a great piece of dialogue too and shows how the character changes as she grows up and decides to throw rocks are buildings when she's haunted by the memory of living with her father.

There's a load of quotable lines and it's a very enjoyable film as a whole with a strong cast, led by Tom Hanks. the image of a feather beginning and ending the film is beautiful and the monologue style it has of Forrest telling tales of his past to people at a bus stop really works for the story and provided some humour aswell.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991,  R)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
I'll be back!
6
Inception 2010,  PG-13)
Inception
The miind-blowing plot of Inception is explained to us via Ellen Paige's character and we see her learning to become the architect and Leo's character Cobb showing her how to do it. We learn the rules of inception through this and it's a great way of storytelling, bringing us right up to date with what's going in very quickly. Also, the models used for all the tower bending etc looked awesome. That's the only only part of the film I could compare to The Matrix. (A lot of people think the films are similar)

The core of the film is the emotional twists from Cobb and is wife Mal's revelations. The whole "you are waiting for a train, you don't know where it's taking you, but it doesn't matter because we're be together..." is so beautifully and an amazing piece of dialogue. They're story is heartbreaking and makes us care deeply about Cobb's destiny at the end of the film.

Those were the three characters that we knew about in depth. It would have been great to know a lot more about the others such as Arthur played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who was absolutely badass as Cobb's right hand man. He kicked some ass in the 2nd dream with all the anti-gravity! But alas, the actual point of exploration of Inception was more important for the movie and no more background info was strictly needed for any more characters such as he.

The imagination that went into the three dream sequence is fantastic. little things like the snow falling down in the 3rd dream when Arthur gave them all "the kick" reflecting the water coming down in the 1st dream - it looked really good. There was also just generally some good action scenes when they were shooting in the car.

The ending annoyed a lot of people but I think it was for the best. An answer might have made things worse, whereas at least this ending will be continued to be talked about!

Edward Scissorhands 1990,  PG-13)
Edward Scissorhands
Very original and random. This is an example of a great Tim Burton film. Dark, intence and spooky.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Awesome pirate movie. I really like Depp and Bloom in the first film.

An American Werewolf in London 1981,  R)
An American Werewolf in London
A classic black comedy film with some great quotable lines. A really enjoyable, creative and original film.
10
Spider-Man 2 2004,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 2
...I love the scene where Harry find out who spider-man really is. it's really intense and shot really well. it's really emotional because you relate to both of the characters from the first film and now you have to take sides. James Franco really gets into his role of Harry as he becomes more and more determined for revenge. Doc Ock is a great villian and there are some good action sequences with him.

There's some great comedy like when Peter's holding up bits of metal to stop them falling on MJ and says "This is heavy" as the first bit of dialogue since he's taken his mask off. The train scene is also a favourite, when the passengers see who is really behind the mask and promise not to tell. The ending is a bit cheesy and cloche for me but it's fine. As a whole it's an epic superhero sequel.
11
The Pianist 2002,  R)
The Pianist
An emotional journey with a character who is interesting and complex. This was a very well cast film, they are all very strong. There's nothing extremely violent and shocking that I didn't expect from this kind of film but it's the subtle moments like when he's hiding that make this film special.

The whole movie is so intense and although it's long, it has good pacing. There are stand out moment in the timeline, like when he imagines playing the piano because he can't actually make any noise.

The music is beautiful and the lighting has a blue tint to it which makes things feel even more cold and heartbreaking...

Planet of the Apes 1968,  G)
Planet of the Apes
Legendary!

Nova is awesome. Welcome to a madhouse of randomness. Taylor is a great character.
13
Titanic (in 3D) 2012,  PG-13)
Titanic (in 3D)
It feels like two films - the first half being a rom-com/drama set on a boat, then the second being an epic romanic-disaster movie! Although the film is just centred around Jack, Rose and her family, the movie still gives an historical account of the event and the sinking of the ship is amazing SPX.

I really like the scene where Rose tries to free Jack from his handcuffs with an axe - it manages to be funny without being awkward and cheesy.

The music may be infamous, but i'm never sick of "my heart will go on" and think the music in the film is suitable and beautiful.

The ending of the film is perfect and shot beautifully. it's a very quotable film with a good script and a brilliant cast. The woman who plays Rose as an old lady is amazing and telling the story from her point of view was a great idea because it made the event really personal and made me feel sympathy for the characters. At the beginning, Rose isn't a very likeable character but I think Jack's influence on her changes her for the good.

There's some errors sure; continuity, historical accuracy... but I think it's a classic movie.

Back to the Future Part II
An enjoyable sequel with some good twists.

Brighton Rock 1947,  Unrated)
Brighton Rock
A British gangster film set in Brighton. The ending of this film is epic. I was waiting for the consequences of Pinky recording that message for his wife. How fortunate for her that the record got stuck! Those two scenes were so intense.

This version of the Brighton Palace pier looks a lot more fun then the current one, the ghost train looked fun. Good performances from the actors in this film and a solid plot which is paced well throughout the film, leading to it's climax...
16
Spider-Man 2002,  PG-13)
Spider-Man
...A good start to the trilogy, helping us get to know Peter Parker and follow him on his unusual journey of self-discovery. This film initiates Peter and Harry's friendship and Peter's relationship with MJ. All of the characters are likeable (apart from the green Goblin, being a badass villain) It has some great character development towards the end of the film after the death of Harry's father. "Spider-man will pay" - setting up for the more arrogant and determined Harry we see in the 2nd film.

I really enjoy the scene where they are all eating a meal and Peter comes in late after supposedly having an accident on his bike. The tension in this scene is brilliant and very suspenseful when that drop of blood falls form the ceiling.

All the SPX used suit the purpose of the film (he os a superhero, after all) The final battle between Spiderman and the Green Goblin is really well presented and the dialogue before Norman dies is perfect.

Great performances from all the actors. I don't think Dunst is very sure of her character in this film but her portrayal improves through the film.

Gladiator 2000,  R)
Gladiator
A film with a good story and a good moral.
18
Brick 2006,  R)
Brick
A very original film with a unique style. it's like a modern day detective film, set in high school. there are a lot of sped up punches and slaps when the character of Brendan gets a beating and they are really effective! - like a comic book. There are some really interesting camera shots and the flashback sequence at the beginning is beautiful and really draws you into the story straight away.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is amazing as always, playing a completely different character to the ones he did in The Lookout, 500 days of Summer and Inception! The few scenes that Emile DeRavin (Claire form Lost :P) were in were really emotional and I felt sorry for her character.

The ending was very interesting and well shot also.
19
The Town 2010,  R)
The Town
An excellent thriller drama that keeps your attention for the whole two hours. It's a really good film in this strong genre of films. Excellent performances from Affleck and the other actors who played the robbers. The FBI agents were also well cast. Also, Blake Lively played a good, believable character.

The film was well paced and had a good amount of suspenseful scenes. It definitely deserves a re-watch so I can watch some of the best scenes again; the scene about the tattoo, the robberies themselves and the more emotional scenes Affleck's character had with his father

The masks the robbers wore were so creepy and the music used during the bank scenes was epic and really helped set the mise-en-scene...

L.A. Confidential 1997,  R)
L.A. Confidential
A very impressive film. it had likeable, 3D characters who the audience are able to identify with. I had my likes and dislikes about the characters. however, they were all very strong, especially Bud White, played by Russell Crowe; he was a very definable character. There was a very engaging, intriguing and realistic plot. Top Marks. Fantastic crime film.

This is an awesome film. It has some great one liners and action scenes. There's a bomb on the bus! Classic.

Memento 2000,  R)
Memento
"I can't remember to forget you."

An intriguing first scene, a man being shot, in rewind! This is a film that keeps you thinking about what could have happened to start off this trail of events you're witnessing. Teddy is an odd looking character, definitely not someone trustworthy.

So without giving out spoilers, it's revealed slowly what's going on. What's happening is very similar to Shutter Island, in a way, only Lenard's not crazy, he's got short term memory loss. It's a great ending and leaves a lot of things down to your interpretation - was Teddy a bad guy, manipulating him into doing what he did? It's an interesting thought.

Lenard is a badass character, for what we know about him. He's witty an he's good at shooting people! He's easy to relate to and Guy had good chemistry with the actress who played Natalie.

This is a great movie and you can see how Chris Nolan went from strength to strength here with his directing career.

Kick-Ass 2010,  R)
Kick-Ass
A super-hero movie aimed at mostly teenagers; the same sort of Audience as Scott Pilgrim except not just for nerdy types. Kick-ass is really something different. It's funny, thrilling and entertaining. It reminds me of Spider-man in a lot of ways and has a lot of references and in jokes about Batman, X-Men and other modern superheroes. .

it's not just a parody though, it's a whole new look at this genre; Kickass doesn't actually have super-human strength or any similar abilities. He just wants to help people. Hitgirl has the exspecations of her dad to live up, that's her motivation. Same goes for Red Mist. The four superheroes are well fault out, grounded characters and I can completely see there being a sequel to this movie.

The soundtrack is awesome. The Banana split song is even in there! The editing is short and snappy and delivers the film well..
