This film mixes a load of genres into one completely enthralling roller-coaster of a movie. I was captivated by the journey that the unlikeable lead-male, Wikus, goes on. I went from hating him, to loving him and backwards and forwards wondering if he could redeem himself.
The amazing special effects are so realistic you forget that it's not really aliens mingling amongst human life. This is very gritty stuff but has some great humour and explosive action. Every time I went to nip out to the toilet something else would happen on-screen to keep me gripped to my seat! My wife was in tears next to me at some of the scenes in the slum and touching moments between the lead alien and his son. The story finishes perfectly but I demand a sequel!
WOW! I thought this would be a bit of a lame horror film but every scene was amazing. This movie is a classic game of cat and mouse travelling along a road of destruction.
They really don't make films like this anymore. The action scenes stand up really well to today's standards without over the top explosions and distracting sound track. The best thing about it is how tense it is. You feel like something terrible awaits the teenager around every corner.I found his acting very real and thought I would be doing the same in his situation. The "Hitcher" is a superb bad guy, really creepy and pyschotic. The pace might be too slow for some people but I thought it was beautifully shot. Perfect for a spooky night in, make sure you have nearby cusions/duvet etc to hide behind.
This film is really, really funny. If you get easily offended by sexual references then this is not for you. The character Seth (the fat one) is obsessed with having sex before he goes to college and he doesn't try and hide it. Maybe I found it so funny because I could relate to some bits. My wife also loved it, she nearly fell of the sofa laughing at some bits.
What happens if your an ex-hollywood superstar action man but you don't want to be governor of California? I guess you make a brilliant film like this. I enjoyed everything about it. The sepia tones, the pokes at Steven Seagal, the plot, the characters, JVCD (even his monologue). Not everyone's cup of tea but I thought it was a really clever idea. It's set in Belgium so be prepared for at least 50% subtitles
I have been wanting to see this film for soooo long. Everyone knows the story plays out in reverse and I wanted to see if it was just a gimmick or if it worked. For one horrible moment I thought it was actually going to be like watching a movie in rewind with people walking backwards and needing subtitles. Luckily that's just the opening scene! I thought it was fantastic. It sends your head spinning a bit at times but is well worth the investment of you time. It could have easily fallen flat on its face but succesfully balances the story with the jumping around time so you can still keep a grip wiuth what has happened and enjoy it.
I'm glad I recorded it because it is definately one I want to watch again and again to work out every little twist and turn. Guy Pearce is great (although could easily be mistaken for Brad Pitt). It ends (or is that begins ?!?) with a great twist that you don't really get a chance to see coming. Stan dout quote from the film: "Isn't the joy of a book not knowing what happens next?"
I loved this movie, probably because I new nothing about it other than it was about people who could teleport, so it was all a surprise.
I don't understand where all the negative reviews come from.
It is one of those films that you can really enjoy without having to think too hard. I couldn't make my mind up whether Hayden is a bit of a wooden actor or if it is just the way he talks, still, it didn't detract from the movie. Jamie Bell and Sam L were cool. Nice to have a bit of British influence too. The only downer was that it finishes so abruptly, obviously they were planning for a trilogy so I hope they go ahead.
Like when I watched X-Men at the cinema, I left trying my hardest to have some supernatural powers but no joy, I will have to keep practising.
Hooray, at last a film that lives up to the hype! This was great fun, a good mix of action and jokes. RDJ was definitely the funniest character. Bad points are Steve Coogan's character isn't funny considering how funny he is in his TV shows and I found the Tom Cruise scenes a bit cheating - it was only funny because it was "Tom Cruise" doing silly stuff. I was pleased to see Jay Baruchel as I think he is very good. Jack Black's part is quite small but he delivers perfectly and hilariously. This film has some classic cheesey one-liners that you will be repeating all week. It also has some quite gruesome (Coogan's final "part") and satirical parts but they work well in the mood of the film. There's lots in it for movie buffs with a great parallel between the opening scene and the final battle. Worthwhile watching at the cinema for the grand army scale of things but would be just as good on DVD.
This is a very cool movie. Big explosions - check, futuristic computer technology - check, bald bad guy - check, interferring journalist woman - check, secret government agency - check, gadgets - check, Weapons of Mass Destruction - check, Terrorists - check, robots - check, city centre battle of the titans - check, it's all in there.
RDJ is excellent as the billionaire-playboy-genius Stark and everyone else does a pretty good job too. It is very slick and one of the best Marvel films. It isn't really suitable for kids under 12, a lot of violent war scenes and terroists pointing a gun at a father in front of his kids, as well as a small sex scene near the start. I didn't give it 5 stars as it was missing a little bit of magic. I think it is the supernatural element of X-Men/Spiderman or the feeling that it could be you as the superhero or helping them out (like Sam Witwicky in Transfomers). Make sure you watch the end credits to see Sam L Jackson - I missed this bit :-(
No matter how much I watch this film it always makes me squirm. I love the story and characters and the special effects still look good despite it being over 20 years old.
This is a proper movie - Car Crash Cinema.
This film is definately trying to look classy/arthouse with it's grey colours and overused clarinet & strings soundtrack but it works and gets you a bit deeper into the mind of the lead character, Trevor (Bale), who has been suffering for a year without any sleep.
I had to watch some of the factory scenes through squinted eyes as they are quite grim. It also makes you feel a bit nautious watching a topless Bale while you a snacking on Pringles and wine.
Although it was slightly obvious to me what the twist was, it doesn't spoil the movie. If I had seen this before movies with similar concepts I would have probably given it 5 stars.
This is a fast paced feast of visual delights. The story is about a group of assassins who kill because "fate" tells them to. It involves a lot of blood and mild gore (enough to make me squirm) and some nauseating shaky/zoomy camera work. This is all done in a very cinematic way and uses some great slow-motion bits to really enhance the action. It has a great sense of humour and is not meant to be taken too seriously. I felt the story was quite similar to "Jumper" but has enough twists and turns to keep you engaged.
An exceptional dromedy. The 3 lead actors excel with their characters and you can really believe in the relationships between them. It's quite a madcap film, especially the scenes between John & Cyrus. Cyrus will make you cringe and laugh and maybe even get a bit watery eyed. I felt really positive after watching this (maybe the wine helped!)
