Ooooooooooh I dunno possibly the most fantastic movie ever made! In the history of the world ever! This has got to be my all time favourite movie. I really don't think anything can or will ever top it. The atmosphere is amazing, the chemistry between the actors is just mind blowing and the way the entire movie is made is just inspirational. Just to be able to escape into the raw emotion of it all! Extremely strong performances from both Bogart and Bergman, Bogart's performance especially for wrongfully losing out on an Academy Award to Paul Lukas (Watch On The Rhine). You see, for me this movie isn't just your not so average love story it's so much more! I mean the guy doesn't get the girl, so it isn't your stereotypical happy Hollywood ending in a time when there were no unconventional endings!
The whole movie is simply about watching Bogart's character searching for closure, it's just phenomenal! In order to move on from his past he has to unexpectedly confront it. A movie with real worthy characters.. you don't feel like you're just watching any old movie... you're actually watching something real. Something genuine. Something worthy.
The music. As time goes by...... How each scene seems to smoulder and melt before your eyes. The Dialogue! (Some of the most memorable quotes in cinematic history) Oh and credit due to Michael Curtiz for pulling this out of the air with no finished scripts on a failing budget. It?s just incomprehensible.
Seriously, how can this not be one of the best movies ever made? It's magnificent. Absolute Perfection in every way.
I love this film. The character's in it are amazing... and you just can't stop watching Edward Norton. I guess you can kinda see the twist coming but i didn't really expect it. The movie kinda plays like a book more than anything with a high moralistic feeling of moving one thing to another. The dialogue is perfect combining poetry and quotes from oscar wilde to name but one litterary aspect give that art house atmosphere. Brad pitt isn't bad in it either. Despite being ocassionally violent, it's just easy and fun to watch.
Truth is, when the series ended... I actually felt like part of me had died! I actually believe that one of my main regrets in life now will actually be not discovering this series sooner! Seriously if you haven't seen it you're wasting your life!
Not only does this movie do the series justice, its possibly one of the best animated movies ever made... (I have been known to be bias.) You do have to admire the level of integrity behind the Bebop, where most production companies would use the series for a simple cash-in... this show breaks the mould. Seriously though, what this movie accomplishes actually rivals what most Hollywood blockbusters bust a nut over... and it does so effortlessly.
How can I express how good this movie is any further? That it can easily stand up to Ghost in the Shell, Akira or Spirited Away in terms of animation... cos it probably could! Or that every single time I think of it... it makes me smile... as cheesy as that sounds... it's actually fucking true... this movie (and the series behind it) does things in a way that most movies will never be able to even begin to compete with.
Effortlessly stylish, effortlessly cool and the characters are just completely outstanding! This movie completely dazzles me.
Completely Flawless.
Oh and on a final note: FAYE VALENTINE IS THE MOST PERFECT WOMAN!!!!! (Despite the fact that she's not actually real.... damn!)
Personally I thrive for Scorsese's mainstream stuff and i'm not afraid to admit that, those who say they've been loyal followers from Taxi Driver etc... well I'm not... but I live for movies of this calibre. Its perfect in its own right. Apart from all the refrences to "Cock" this movie is an outstanding piece of cinematic history. Its got the legend that is Nicholson as the notorious gangster, something he carries off effortlessly as if his entire persona is sleaze and corruption. Matt Damon, someone who is constantly overlooked to prove himself... totally does it in this movie. Actually watching him would keep any audience member on the edge of their seat as his corrupt American dream humanity is constantly competing against DiCaprio's entire professionalism. In my eyes this is probably Dicaprio's hiatus role. His performance as out-of-luck undercover cop with the venerable side is captivating and I haven't seen a performance this good in many movies. The direction is effortless, it flows beautifully, and how separate lines of story merge together so completely makes this one of the best directed movies I've ever seen. My hat especially goes off to Mark Wahlberg, an actor who I'm not really interested in, for proving me wrong and being very memorable in this. Violent! Snappy dialogue. Outstanding performances. Effortless direction. Perfect.
Oh Oldboy... How I love thee let me count the ways....
1: The Story. Its simply otherworldly.. now I?ve said this sort of thing before... but in this case right after the opening credits I just physically couldn't take my eyes away from the screen! A man is imprisoned in a hotel room for 15 years!!! That's just genius!
2: Revenge. For anyone who loves a great revenge movie. It'll grab you by the balls. This isn't just your mindless "get your own back" type crap! This is clever, calculating and full of heart! By the time you get to the end you'll look back and realise how twisted this movie has been all along.
3: Characters. The characters are flawless. Min-sik Choi gives THE most amazing performance! The way his character continues to evolve through 2 hours of footage is just outstanding. You really feel a connection to this character and then....
4: Direction. Hmmm this Chan-wook Park guy is already pretty big, and there's a reason for that... but you know what... he's only going to get bigger! Here the direction is sharp, tight and pulls a lot of punches!
5: That Fight Scene! One man. One Hammer. One corridor full of angry Korean thugs. Awesomeness!!!
So overall it raises the bar of what you expect/demand from the other bullshit movies that are just constantly churned up out there! This is an entirely different calibre that totally blows a lot of your lesser revenge based movies clean out of the water. An absolute gem of a movie, and you know they only ever pop up once in a blue moon.
There is no words that will ever quite capture the sheer brilliance of this film. It is essential film noir and utterly captivating from the opening credits. The Score, The filmography, The visual effects. Everything blends so seamlessly it appears effortless. This unconventional story is what you, an audience member, make it: A tainted love affair. A physiological thriller. A voueristic fantasy. A haunting detective story. James Stewart is truly mesmerising it is like no performance he has delivered before and combined with Kim Novak's stunning beauty that just grasps you in a way that you can really believe Stewart's obsession with her character. Together their chemistry is enough to ignite a response that could keep anyone enticed. I could watch this film over and over again and each time find some new aspect to love about it. It is the perfect film and a remarkable achievement to the craft of filmmaking. Hitchcock could never top this no matter how he tried, every single scene is like that from a dream. It's poetry for the screen. The calibre of movies today could not even dare to stand next to this. There is a reason this film has a huge following. Visually inspiring. An absolute masterpiece.
For a basic road trip movie this is one of the best movies I've seen in ages. All the character's are diverse and interesting. Typically no matter how different they are they end up bonding together. Personally loved Steve Carell taking a back seat from the exuberant comic factor but still ends up being rather funny in his own unique style, also showed him totally pulling off a more serious role. Still think he's underrated as an actor but in this he's great. In fact all performances in this movie are what make this movie. That along with the very witty and cleverly written script making this seem like a parody of a "family" film by dealing with a lot of adult issues. Great message of how you don't have to achieve your dreams because life is already everything you could ever want. Extremely watchable feel-good movie !!!
Well worth the wait. So so so Good. A lot darker than the original but also more action packed. Good evolution of characters and really strong performances. Some parts are hysterical. Everything you could want. Slightly iritating that somethings are unresolved but definately leaves you wanting more... Bring on the next movie!
What is not to like about this movie... it's original, its fun and it has a great cast. The story line is unique and keeps you riveted. Jonny Depp totally steals the show as Jack Sparrow and now has become one of the most legendary movie characters in history for doing so. Good chemistry between Bloom and Knightely and a quietly melodramatic performance from Rush. A totally unique and original story about Pirates cursed with immortality until a blood debt is repaid. Witty and fast dialogue, exciting action sequences and superb direction makes this a pleasure to watch at any time. Also on re-watching its nice to see the roots of the sequel push through without distracting from its own story. A truly great movie and one of my all time favourites!
One of the best movies I've seen all summer, not because it's especially clever or sophisticated but because you don't expect it for being something different. Its gritty, it's dark and its generally a well made film. For a plot that consists of two guys drinking and smoking weed and just generally doing nothing in an urban neighbourhood... I just couldn't stop watching!
Christian Bale is haunting in this performance and this is probably one of his best movies. Freddy Rodriguez is equally good as Bale's support and together they have this very charismatic partnership. To be fair the movie doesn't exactly have the most extensive of plots... but you do feel like it covers a lot of ground whilst you're watching it. Also as the movie progresses it becomes very uncomfortable and kinda scary with Bale's instability. Think modern day Deer Hunter... but in a similar style to Training Day. A slow burning character driven movie.... and that just happens to be what I like.
However for some, you'll either love it or you'll hate it...
From its opening the chemistry amongst the characters never lets up and you can't help but be pulled in. Constantly maintaining heavy overtones of claustrophobia but in a similar way to the play remains an observation of human behaviour.
I love movies that just grace the screen naturally and appear so effortless, this is one of those movies. Everything appears very natural and easy to watch and the characters that Williams created have never been so vibrant... I'm sorry but I've seen stage performances that aren't even near the same league as this movie!
Everything about this movie for me is enticing. It's like everytime you watch these characters interact you pick up on other little things in the actors performances. Paul Newman gives his best performance as the alcoholic Brick. But there has never been such an emphasis of the transformation from sex symbol to amazing actress like there is for Elizabeth Taylor in this movie, she provides a legendary performance. It's like complete metamorphism. Newman and Taylor at their very best! Then combine all that with the steamy southern atmosphere...
Wow, ok, ok..... Maybe not the quite the masterpiece expected by some (or me) as it falls short only slightly! Ever so slightly. But after the mediocre reception to Death Proof (Which I still stand by as a fucking awesome film by-the-way) cos you know in a few years people are going to say "Hmmm that Grindhouse idea was pretty fucking epic it's a shame we were to stupid to realise its full potential at the time" and "oh and we should have totally realised the Grindhouse concept in the UK, cos it was pretty frigging stupid not to." -Not that I?m bitter or anything.
I'm pretty sure that I can guarantee that a lot of people will be very happy and'll remember this one for years to come! Distinctly clever in its own Tarantino way... possibly even a little too ambitious with its ending?? To be fair its a genius idea. I mean, how can you make your average war movie story different from those other war movie stories??? Despite ripping off/paying homage to other forms of genre (The Spaghetti Western nod was a pretty obvious in-your-face stomp right from the get-go) in it's roundabout mashed up way, Tarantino manages once again to throw everything into the blender and create a masterpiece.... because thats just what he does.
However, where Dogs was obviously a heist movie, Kill Bill a Japanese based revenge flick... in this case its Tarantino's zealous off the wall style antics come from everywhere and it's that that'll keep me watching this again and again. As it's not just another war movie. To sound something like a movie poster... it's a Tarantno war movie, so you know, expect the unexpected.
On a side note...Waltz steals the entire flick from right out under Pitt. Hands Down: one of the most charismatic Nazi performances on screen....ever! (It's been said but still true)
Adam Sandler simply blew me away in this. His every performance is in this is outstanding. The story is simply wonderful in its simplicity. It's such an engrossing movie that I feel I could just catch the movie anywhere in its timeline and just watch it again and again. Every actor in this movie proves their worth. Don Cheadle proves he can hold the limelight. Adam Sandler proves he can act. Liv Tyler proves she doesn't always have to be the irresistible character stereotype shes used to. And Donald Sutherland proves he can basically sit around in the background and not really do anything.... but oh does he do it well. A simple story of friendship rekindled after years.. and events... have gone by. Ok it might end up being the Channel 5 afternoon movie, quite soon, but still... It Pulled me in... made me love it.... and in a good way... (not in a sexual way)
Good stuff. Pretty strong movie throughout. Can totally understand why a lot of people like this movie.... even if it does have Mr Marky dressed in a big white chicken type outfit! Its a good look for him.
I'm sorry but this movie is all kinds of awesome. It's like the ultimate bad 80's pop video but with vampires! Ahhh I wish i had a perm and a Bad boy attitude :(
This was the strongest story in King's Skeleton Crew and is one hell of a strong movie! Its a character driven horror movie. It's not your average slasher Joe movie you do end up involved and engrosed in what happens to the characters and the choices they make. This movie is actually pretty fucking scary. For a whole story that revolves around the unknown its hard to try and nor give anything away would spoil it. However the ending of this vision is much more controversial and far more haunting! I put myself through the torture of watching it again just because I couldn't believe it. Thomas Jane has a much more gripping screen persona that people give him credit for! In a word he rocked the hell out of this movie. Really Gripping stuff.
Amanda Seyfried as a beautiful, haunting, borderline psychotic stalking prostitute! Sign me up! Unbelievably hot! ... Not the whole psychotic stalker thing btw... the whole Amanda Seyfried thing! Just so we're clear. Though to be fair, there are a lot worse things in life then having an incredibly hot Amanda Seyfried going all stalker on you. ( And don't get any ideas you Flixster pervs... if I suddenly get a million friend requests from people with bad English and Amanda Seyfried as their profile pics! I'm onto you! That means you too... JUAN!)
Do you ever think Miss Seyfried must look back at the old Mean Girls cast days and laugh her arse off? Maybe its just me, but watching her going from being the overlooked one in that... to then seeing her in this! All i can say is it's about bloody time!
Anyway, as far as this movie goes, not really the tense sexy thriller I was lead to believe. However, with players such as Neeson and Moore.. you know to expect something good. What you get... is actually a lot more intriguing.
Moore mainly carries most of the scenes in this movie, which she?s probably used to. However, it is a genuinely well established movie, with deliciously twisted elements... but its especially worthwhile to see Seyfried get to deservedly shine.
Great cast, Original story of murderess rising to fame, Witty dialogue, Amazing soundtrack, and yet blurs the boundaries of what is adult material by presenting in such a light hearted way... meaning anyone can watch it. Renee Zellweger is a great lead, despite how thin she looks, and carries the whole movie. Catherine Zeta-Jones, probably didn't deserve an Oscar, but has such a stage presence in this movie that it could be argued either way. Finally Richard Gere kinda parodies his own reputation and adds another dimension to how enjoyable this movie is. It also really satisfying to have a successful musical in today's age where everything just seems effortless. The actors did their own singing and dancing and as a team, and with this chemistry, worked perfectly. The only thing wrong was the occasionally duff direction recorded when filming the amazing dance sequences. Oh.. And how good is Miss Zellweger's Doll impression? However I love this movie!
The movie transforms Stephen King's rather simple tale into something wonderful and something epic. The simple story of a man who becomes imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit becomes a heart-warming story of friendship under the most impossible of circumstances, and a fight for freedom. The incredible story is fully loaded with characters that an audience can connect with, fantastic direction and superb acting, and from start to finish you find yourself mesmerised. The movie stands as a perfect example of originality to its craft. The only problem that this movie actually has is that its so involving and literally pulls you into its atmosphere that it can often be hard to watch.
The movie also acts as a prime example of how the Oscars can get it wrong. Morgan Freeman lost best supporting actor to Tommy Lee Jones, and for anyone who has seen this movie knows instantly that it wouldn't be the masterpiece it is without its untimely narration of its best character...played by Morgan Freeman. Freeman and Robbins have great chemistry together and both seemed to slipped into their roles quite easily, for two actors often associated for their supporting work they make an superb team. Sporting some of the most memorable lines in movie history and a wonderful supporting cast makes this one movie everyone must see. Magnificent.
The way the effortless characters have been written for this movie is pure inspiration, combine that with the fact that Cage is fantastic in this movie. The whole movie just slotted together. A subtle comedy with some amazing character moments. though won't be to everyone's taste.
I found this to be a movie that really stayed with me in my thoughts after seeing it and in a way can change a person's outlook on life. The movie's plot revolves around the characters and the way they live their lives daily with no specific direction and how nothing really major occurs to move the plot along, smaller subplot's happen that change the characters before you. Everyone goes on about how amazing DiCaprio is in this movie by playing a mentally handicapped person with such accuracy and integrity that secured his place as a talented actor. However it is Depp's movie and it is his character that draws us in an we can relate to. Set in a what appears like a real claustrophobic environment only continues to show how every characters's life continues to fall out in mediocrity and you get the sense that none of them are truly happy. Then when Depp fnds happiness with his new friend/love interest Lewis he starts to open up and realise his oppertunity to be happy, all he has to do is face the decisions that have been holding him back. What I found appealing as well was how Depp didn't appear attractive or glamorous that is glorified today, he appears just like any average person which in its own way is inspiring. Its simplistic storytelling at its best and maybe thats why its very effective. Uplifting.
The first was like one of my all time favourite movies... where did it go wrong? What was becoming of a cult classic is now trying to hard. Half of this movie was good: seeing the bride's wedding.... seeing how she was trained, the fight with Elle driver, the stylish flashbacks in black and white. But by the end just becomes tacky, (what was her answering her name as a child?) the way she kills Bill!???? I know this movie isn't meant to be taken seriously anyway but after the anticipation of the first one this has such an anti-climax.
I really enjoyed Shooter, the pirates of the caribbean movies, lord of the rings movies,Hidalgo,Run fatboy run,the lost boys, jurassic park, the last samurai was alright and there are lots of movies on this list that I want to see aswell good list.
