My Favorite Movies

1
The Outlaw Josey Wales 1976,  PG)
The Outlaw Josey Wales
The best western ever. A great story about how the civil war tore the country apart. Brilliantly shot and directed, it does not follow any movie formula. Long, and thought out, this movie is the thinking-person's western.
2
The Big Lebowski 1998,  R)
The Big Lebowski
A really dark and twisted dramedy about a total loser and his involvement in a kidnapping. An amazing soudtrack, cast and direction, this one is a classic of our time.
3
Superbad 2007,  R)
Superbad
This movie has something. An undeniable and somewhat universal soul about that awkward time when high school is coming to an end. Not to mention that it features some of the funniest and most original writing to come along in a long time. I can't think of anyone I wouldn't recommend this movie to. It also features quite possible the best soundtrack of all time. Not only are the choices great, but they really fit each scene they are in. This movie is comedy art.
4
My Blue Heaven 1990,  PG-13)
My Blue Heaven
An all-time great comedy! Steve Martin delivers an amazing performance in this movie. Good for the entire family, this movie has laughs, a couple "action" scenes, a nerd redemption, and a few love stories.

Its hard not to love this one!
5
Forgetting Sarah Marshall 2008,  R)
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
A really well constructed and hilarious film. Filled with amazing characters this one is just a fun ride. A really good take on heartache and healing. The prevailing message of this movie is, if you don't like your life stop bitching and change it. Something we could all do a little better. An all time favorite.
6
The Hudsucker Proxy 1994,  PG)
The Hudsucker Proxy
I really enjoyed this dark comedy. Feels a lot like The Big Lebowski, but its different. The cast does a great job, and this movie just kinda grabs you from the beginning. This one is really well shot, another great film in the Coen Bros. collection.
7
Wet Hot American Summer 2001,  R)
Wet Hot American Summer
This is one of the all-time best comedies out there. A total piece of insanity about the last day of a summer camp. You'll laugh until your sides are sore, then laugh some more.
8
The Sting 1973,  PG)
The Sting
This is an absolute classic. Made in an era before sex and explosions were what a movie was all about, this one is about the acting. It is a slow moving, quite movie that works great for a quiet evening at home. You will be familiar with the grift even if you haven't seen this one, as it has been very imitated.
9
In the Key of Oscar 1992,  Unrated)
In the Key of Oscar
Oscar Peterson: Music in the Key of Oscar is a must-see for every jazz lover. A great documentary about maybe the best jazz pianist ever, this movie gives a great balance between music, historical context, and the significance to the musical world. I wish they showed this in public school music classes!
10
So I Married an Axe Murderer 1993,  PG-13)
So I Married an Axe Murderer
Quite possible the best romantic comedy of all time. Myers really shines in this one, and each the supporting cast brings something good to the table.

This is one of my all-time favorites, and a must see for anyone looking to smile.
11
The Fifth Element 1997,  PG-13)
The Fifth Element
Great by both action and SciFi standards. It's got it all, but the best part is being tossed into the world. Be prepared to hit the ground running. Don't worry too much about figuring the world out, just try to stay with the characters. The familiarity with the world will come naturally.

An all-time favorite.
12
Ghostbusters 1984,  PG)
Ghostbusters
A classic film, and any child of the 80s loves it. My favorite thing about this movie, was that I thought it was funnier as an adult that I did as a child. A great job of giving the kids something to ooh and ahhh about while cracking the grown-ups up.

A classic.
13
Ghost in the Shell 1996,  R)
Ghost in the Shell
An awesome sci-fi flick. I haven't watched much anime, and don't pretend to know a damn thing about it. But this movie rocks. Very cool look at the future, and quite possibly the coolest looking animated movie I've seen. Made me think of Blade Runner.
14
The Jerk 1979,  R)
The Jerk
This is Martin at his best, an absolute classic. While it does drag here and there, there aren't many moments without a reason to laugh. This comedy is extremely silly, and ahead of its time in many ways.
Anyone needing a laugh could use this movie.
15
Nurse Betty 2000,  R)
Nurse Betty
Another seriously dark and twisted comedy about some seriously sick people. Hilariously disturbing exploration of people's obsessions with a soap opera.
16
Hoodlum 1997,  R)
Hoodlum
This right here, is 30s gangster movies at their best. Fishburne delivers a GREAT character, Bumpy Johnson, one cold cat. Garcia and Roth head their prospective gangs, and both deliver strong performances. This strength of this movie is the supporting cast, however. Each and every character is interesting and well played. This movie is packed to the brim with talent, and will fill your hunger for a good action-drama, gangster or revenge movie.
17
The 40 Year Old Virgin 2005,  R)
The 40 Year Old Virgin
This one is hilarious. An all-timer. The awkward humor in this is really well done, without being too over the top. The strength of this movie, is the acting. You really truly feel like you're hanging out with these people when you're watching this movie. There is a laid back, natural heir to this movie that is just so so good.
18
Grandma's Boy 2006,  R)
Grandma's Boy
This is another all-time favorite. This is one of the definitive comedies for folks of my generation, in my opinion. Pot and video games, along with hilarity reminiscent of Happy Gilmore. Great for anyone who likes Sandler movies, or anyone looking for a good comedy.
19
Old School 2003,  R)
Old School
This was one of those movies that started the break on a new wave of comedy. Ridiculous to the bone, and outlandishly funny, this one is a person favorite. Great characters, great writing, this movies got it.
20
Death to Smoochy 2002,  R)
Death to Smoochy
This is one dark piece of comedy right here. I find myself laughing harder as the movie goes on. Not a single person in this movie doesn't deliver at the very least, a good character. Williams delivers a performance to be reckoned with, though. His gradual degredation into despair and insanity is one of the best and funniest performances of all time. Norton delivers cornball at its best.
21
The Sword in the Stone 1963,  G)
The Sword in the Stone
While I'm not a huge fan of Disney movies, this one truly inspires the imagination. A fun journey of a young boy (King Arthur) exploring the world with an old time traveler (Merlin). A great watch for all ages.
22
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective 1994,  PG-13)
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
This movie was way out in front of the pack. Really re-defined what a comedy could be, and brought slapstick to genius levels. Still a classic, and will probably make me laugh until I die.
23
Burn After Reading 2008,  R)
Burn After Reading
This is one part Lebowski, one part Hudsucker, one part Spy Game. While I wouldn't classify this as a comedy, it is quite hilarious. The comedic acting is really excellent, but with a cast as amazing as this, what do you expect. This is an enjoyable "spy" movie, in that its about morons trying to play at the spy game. There is a pretty cutting commentary in here about the American way, but it at no point comes off as preachy. Its more embedded in the comedic situations.
24
Park 2006,  R)
Park
I found this movie to be both hilarious and heartwarming. A really balanced, well-felt out look at relationships from almost every conceivable angle.

A really enjoyable watch, and instant classic in my home!
25
Reno 911!: Miami 2007,  R)
Reno 911!: Miami
This movie is a totally off-the wall whack-job. It's full of talented and really funny people, and it's even better if you're familiar with the show.

Kind of reminds me of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective in that it kind of breaks the mold for what a movie is.
26
Zero Effect 1998,  R)
Zero Effect
This is an instant favorite! I am not a Pullman fan, but he totally blew me away in this one. He plays a brilliant and insane man, and Stiller is great as always. Stiller plays the straight-man roll for once. A movie for people who like characters.

A great story, well told, and the performances are all fantastic.
27
Groundhog Day 1993,  PG)
Groundhog Day
Quite possibly my favorite movie of all time. Not only is it a heartwarming holiday type movie, it has a Scrooged-like streak of Murray being an immense dick, which is always a hilarious experience.

This movie has it all and beyond being a good movie, it delivers a great message.
