Marvel's The Avengers
PG-13
Ok I was conflicted for a while. But I think I have resolved the conflict! I liked this movie. And that's that. But that is NOT to say I LOVED it. It wasn't a matter of expectations either. It neither exceeded nor fell short in that sense. What it is, is that within the "superhero" genre of movies, I have identified at least two sub-genres, and without going thru a detailed analysis of what each one is, I will simply say that Christopher Nolan's Batman series are one sub-genre, and Thor, Captain America, Hulk, etc. are another. (And then there's crap like Spiderman which I won't even get into. Only the first one was reasonably good. Trash the rest). Anywho. I am more a fan of the darker, more mature sub-genre that Nolan's Batmans fall into. But I have made my peace with the other category. The effects were fantastic, if not a little too good at times (I said the same thing about Thor). The action was a little over the top but that's a defining characteristic of this sub-genre, i suppose, so no problem, love it. The acting was... Mixed. Some were really good, some plain sucked. The story was... Acceptable. Character development: While Loki himself was well known and well developed, his army of bad guys needed more depth. And finally the cheesiness factor which is the bane of my existence: it was much, MUCH better than the worst I have seen within this sub-genre, but it could still be better. Overall, it redeemed itself, because it was solid entertainment and unforgettable imagery. 4/5.
