I've only recently become introduced to the residents of royston vasey a few months ago, being from a somewhat small and inbred town in the south does not take away from the slighty bizarre and inbred northerners portrayed in the film. If your not a fan of the original series then this film might be a bit hard to follow; after discovering that they are in fact fictional characters geoff - the local idiot, herr lipp - the walking german innuendo and hillary briss - the murderous butcher are sent into the real world to find out why their creators are getting rid of them and what follows is one of the best television to film transitions i've seen in a long while. its obvious that The League throughly enjoyed the change and lack of creative restaints (which they probably suffered routinely at the BBC); the notion of 3 of reece shearsmiths characters appearing in one frame together is screen gold and the laughs do come thick and fast - you can tell that the creators are film enthusiasts with tasty titbits like "Shelly Winters". Like the televsion show however its for the more desering pallet, but it highlights how the creators chose to do something rather outlandish and extremely interesting with their charcters rather then send them to a holiday resort- the stop motion creatures are something of a higlight as well, although looking cartoony they fit right in with the feel and dynamic of the film and make you wonder why the evil genius chose the one with glasses for the creatures eyes... Although the film was transefered to such a large scale it does not shy away from its humble television roots with cameos from simon pegg, peter kay and more creme of british comedy talent and it in the end has everyone asking "what actually is a humunculus?"
