This has been amongst my favourites ever since I first watched it like 6 years ago. Obviously, as with his second film "nagai yume" the budget was a bit tight especially when trying to adapt an ito manga, but higuchinsky's vision shines through. I think higuchinsky is a rare gem having seen only 2 films from him, I just wish he would make more, and possibly, make his ultimate masterpiece with a bigger budget. I would love to see this man unleash his imagination on a good budget.
This has got to be my all time favourite film. Anno brought fujitani's book to life, and he did it sooooo well. With the atmosphere and beauty of an iwai film. Poetic and touching. I really need to read fujitani's book, not only was her performance amazing, the material her and anno had to work with was a brilliant and realistic account of an emotionally drained, damaged, and lost young girl.
Damn near perfect. I got this on the VERY cheap, expecting a cheap movie version of the board game, I later found out it was an extremely well crafted film that inspired the board game. Everyone should see this at least once!
I JUST bought this like a year ago, and after having watched it, I wondered why it had taken me so long to come upon this gem. It is ironic that, though the atmosphere of western movies seems to be my favourite, I have not seen more of them. I have only seen django and once upon a time in the west to date (el topo as well if that counts). This flick hasn't gotten the attention it deserves in my opinion. Franco nero is absolutely wonderful and genuinely "bad-ass", not the forced, fake crap we often see in film.
Anyways, shitty review, but basically, this movie is HIGHLY entertaining and very worth the 20-30 bucks it would cost you to add it to your collection.
Wow, this movie was absolutely PERFECT. The cast was so incredibly suited for this role. Wonderful twist which I didn't see coming, and this film actually had me in tears, many times. It is really a heartbreaking film once you get past the "disturbing" qualities.
I can't find the words to describe how much I LOVED this film (as wll as EVERYTHING else of toyoda that I have seen).
Apparently, this is a look into today's youth in japan. Whether or not it is represented properly, it is still a very powerful film. The performances are top notch, the cinematography is brilliant, very good direction, and one of the best uses of music in modern film.
I have yet to know someone who has seen this and hasn't enjoyed it.
Jodorowsky's masterpiece (in my opinion). I first saw this film in a repertory theatre at a midnight showing. I was blown away. I had heard about jodorowsky, but WOW. I was really blown away.
This film was a mindfuck for me and still i (as are most jodorowsky films, safe for his more accessible santa sangre). Lots of bible references (I haven't read the bible), and a lot of mysticism. Even if you don't grasp all of the metaphors (luckily I was watching with someone who had read the bible so I was explained a few scenes, namely, the rock and water scene), this is a great film for visual stimulation and even if you don't catch all of the metaphors, your brain will still be at full force.
One of my all time favorites. I recommend this to anyone with an open mind.
I'm a big nakashima fan, so I originally watched this due to her starring role, I was expecting a very medicro movie as most singers-turned-actors project usually are, but this was of a high standard.
This is a chick flick really, I can't go reccomending this to any males (although I made my partner watch it with me :0). It is a very well made chick flick though, and as someone who usually hates chick flicks, that's saying a lot.
Nakashima was not too bad in her portrayal though I think they should have toned down her "tantrum" scenes as they were a bit overacted.
Soundtrack was to my taste of course, so that helped a lot. A simplistic, but touching story. Worth a watch for open minded guys and definitely for most women.
