Excellent. Excellent. Excellent. The commotion this movie caused when it first came out was a crazy, deep commentary on the state of gender in the United States. We are so USED TO movies where men hurt, abuse, rape, torture, threaten and kill women that we have come to see it as NORMAL. How sad. But when a film characterized woman kills a man in self-defense the media world and culture is all in an uproar. Very very interesting to say the least...
This movie is SOOOOOOO surprisingly good!!! I rarely watch movies more than 1 or 2 times... But this is one I think I have seen 4, 5, maybe 6 times and it is still just as good. Highly Recommended!
An older friend of mine was just telling me today of how the girls in her small town (midwest farm) high school knew how to give themselves miscarriages with coat hangers in the 50s. My grandmother told me stories of this from the 1930s. Illness, scarring, and the occasional death result. This movie is a remarkable telling of some of the stories surrounding this aspect of women's lives and the doctors who "treated" them.
love. tears. beauty. ireland. great movie. my only complaint -- Hilary needs to stop the weight loss because she is now way too skinny to look good in movies. But she does give another stellar performance (as always) and remains one of my favorite actors.
