1
All Quiet on the Western Front 1930,  Unrated)
All Quiet on the Western Front
Undoubtedly the best film I've ever seen. Nearly perfect in all areas, impactful on the heart and mind, and considerably accurate and believeable.
2
Ladri di Biciclette (The Bicycle Thief) (Bicycle Thieves) 1948,  Unrated)
Ladri di Biciclette (The Bicycle Thief) (Bicycle Thieves)
The best non-American made film ever, The Bicycle Thief could be the most heartbreaking film that I've ever seen.
3
Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (Aguirre, the Wrath of God) 1972,  R)
Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (Aguirre, the Wrath of God)
Klaus Kinski makes this film brilliant, as opposed to very good. The sheer intensity on hsi face is terrifying and mystifying, and the film is beautifully filmed.
4
Le Procès (The Trial) 1963,  Unrated)
Le Procès (The Trial)
Orson Welles' best film and Anthony Perkins' best role - and based off of a damn fine piece of writing as well.
5
Downfall (Der Untergang) 2004,  R)
Downfall (Der Untergang)
The Downfall is easily the best film of the last thirty-plus years, giving a surreal view into the final days of Hitler and the Nazi regime.
6
The Deer Hunter 1978,  R)
The Deer Hunter
Take De Niro and Walken, put them in the same film, and have them give the best performances of their careers and you have The Deer Hunter.
7
The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (Jeder für sich und Gott gegen alle)(Every Man for Himself and God Against All) 1975,  Unrated)
The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (Jeder für sich und Gott gegen alle)(Every Man for Himself and God Against All)
I may overrate this simply due to the fact that the story is so fascinating and Bruno S. is believable and stunning.
8
Empire of the Sun 1987,  PG)
Empire of the Sun
Christian Bale gives the best child performance that I've ever seen (slightly ahead of Maiola in the Bicycle Thief) and Spielberg gives his best work, in terms of the technical aspects of filmmaking.
9
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington 1939,  Unrated)
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Capra's best directed film, Stewart's best performance, and a political message about the United States government that will never be matched.
10
Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West) 1968,  PG-13)
Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West)
The best Western that I've ever seen, wonderfully shot and acted, and it has one of the best endings in the history of cinema.
