Rear Window 1954,  PG)
Rear Window
This is an awesome movie that follows a man stuck in his home from a broken leg who watches the world that unfolds around his apartment courtyard.
We get to watch this world as well from the protection of his window and we are able to spy on little pieces of these peoples lives and even see what may be a murder take place.
The mood of the film weighs heavy as we too are trapped in the apartment. Hitchcock makes the story flow and the characters come alive even though they are just people in windows.

Stand by Me 1986,  R)
Stand by Me
This is one of the best movies to me because when I watch it I remember the feelings I had when with my friends as a kid. I know what it's like to go out into the wild for camping trips with my buddies and the fact that our parents knew nothing of it was exciting.
This flick brings all those emotions out in me and that is what a good movie should do. It should touch the person watching it in a personal way. Most of them just entertain.
The young actors in this flick pull off a range of emotions and they do it well. The story is compelling and the music sets the mood just right.
Based off of a novella by Stephen King we see that the guy can do more than just write horror movies. He can create characters that can be as real as the friend you had when you were twelve.

Somewhere in Time 1980,  PG)
Somewhere in Time
This is one of my favorite movies. The acting is great and the story is compelling. It has a time travel element to it that made me watch it for the first time and I thought it was a very original way to pull of that aspect. The rest is a love story that is very sweet. I recommend this one to everyone with the warning to the guys that this is a chick flick.

The Shawshank Redemption 1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
Great flick. It's a story be Stephen King that was perfectly executed on the screen. The acting is right on and the sets pulled you into the movie. I could watch this one over and over.

Superman 1978,  PG)
Superman
This is the origin of the man of steel based on the silver age comics history. Our hero comes to earth and becomes a hero while fighting Lex Luthor. Excellent acting and some great flying scenes. I like how they took the time to tell the story.
Usually the origin is rushed in many of these films but this one takes the time to flesh out the story of the man behind the cape.
This vision is a little out of date in some parts of the story but it was made during a different time in the comics and might not be what people today see as Superman. I look past that and see a pretty good version of that time periods Superman.
Christopher Reeve pulled off the role perfectly and became and icon himself. He was powerful and kind and truthful and in the long run proved that he didn't need the super powers to be a super man.
This is a clean and entertaining movie and it holds up to the ages as being a good story in and of itself.

Memento 2000,  R)
Memento
This is a movie that is different than all others I had seen. The editing choice in this one sets up a strange movie. I liked the different way of telling the story. Very fresh. Acting was great and the cast fit their roles perfectly. This is one that will have you talking about it after watching it.

Donnie Darko 2001,  R)
Donnie Darko
excellent

Brick 2006,  R)
Brick
I went into this not expecting to like it as much as I did. It was a detective flick in the fashion of the old noir movies that was set in a high school. It plays the movie very serious and the setting makes it darker than you would think. There a very strong characters leading the way through the story. The dialogue was great and it really sold the film for me. I highly recommend this one.

Chasing Amy 1997,  R)
Chasing Amy
This is the best of the bunch for me right now. Smith's voice is heard in all of the characters and his story is spot on. This is a love story between not only a boy and a girl but of two friends as well when dealing with the changes in their lives.
The movie cost way less than the big budget Mallrats but looked better. It had a good mood to the film that was made better by the performances by all the actors involved.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The beginning of the perfect trilogy.
14
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2003,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Awesome.
15
The Postman 1997,  PG-13)
The Postman
I had to bump this one up a little after giving it another watch. It's an excellent movie with a great cast that pulls off every role.
Costner plays the Postman perfectly and it's awesome to see this character act like a real man with flaws. He isn't the white knight who rides into town and saves everyone without any worries in the world. He is a conflicted man who finds himself over his head very fast and stands up to that challenge when given no other choice.
The production value on the flick is great as we travel through a world that has suffered war and disease.
It's a long one... three hours... but the story is well crafted and every part feels important.
Will Patton plays a great villain in the movie and, for me, is one of the great baddies in cinema.
16
Frailty 2002,  R)
Frailty
A dark and interesting movie that I think everyone should watch. It's not what you think it is.
17
Midnight in Paris 2011,  PG-13)
Midnight in Paris
The more I think about this movie the more I like it. While I'm not a big Woody Allen fan I am seeing a trend in which of his movies I like. The ones that he isn't in.
This movie spoke to me in a lot of ways. It's about a man who wants more with his life but is afraid to do what's needed to make it happen. He's a man who sees the beauty in walking the city streets at night. The world he sees is one that I find exciting and wish I could join him in the adventure.
It's a film that is well written and well made and all of the aspects of the story come together to create a bit of magic for me that I don't get to see much on the screen these days.
