Back to the Future
Just the complete package of entertainment; filled with great humour, suspense, romance, action, and a sharp script. Has a memorable sountrack and film score, plus the MJ Fox factor.

Cidade de Deus (City of God) 2002,  R)
Cidade de Deus (City of God)
It's not that often that a film comes around and totally floors me in the highest aspects that I expect of a great film as Cidade de Deus did. And it's not that often that I get so engrossed and extremely excited by such a film that had stayed in my memory for many days after with its powerful images, dialogues, characters, and deft direction. Combined with the flawless performances, some brilliant soundtracks, sharp editing, and dazzling cinematography, first-time director Fernando Meirelles has delivered to me an unforgettable cinematic experience that I'll treasure for a long time to come. Obrigado Fernando!

I don't think there's any shame to be making a song and dance about this spectacular film as it is deserving of high praise and its Oscar trophy for the 2002 Best Picture. It's dazzling, glitzy, glamorise, and extravagant but most of all... dynamic. Rob Marshall, take a bow.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
I think this is the movie that convince Madonna to marry Guy Ritchie. And I think 'Swept Away' was the reason why Madonna decided to divorce Guy Ritchie. Haha...

What? Just dialogue? Just two people talking? It won't work, surely... Love it!
58
The Mist 2007,  R)
The Mist
WOW, just WOW... stunned and floored!!!!

Without spoiling too much of the movie, The Mist is a well crafted film that fills in the genre of horror with more than just monsters and creatures. The study of group dynamics, the examination of fear, tension & paranoia, and the focus on religion are all worked into this hopelessness scenario.

There may be some viewers that this movie will not work on, or cannot reflect on the Director's views. It will, however, leave a prolonged afterthought and linger even further after more discussions.

While it was fun to have monster movies such as Cloverfield and I Am Legend that supported the ideas of end-of-days scenarios, The Mist is a movie that ranks as more entertaining and directed piece of cinema.

PS: The Mist is a great testament to film-making and creative control. After watching this movie, I'm now left wondering what Darabont could have done with The Shawshank Redemption & The Green Mile if he had it his way... full creative authority of his vision and storytelling.

The Station Agent 2003,  R)
The Station Agent
Amongst all the recent Hollywood generics and clutter of movies, The Station Agent is one of those rare treats that you can take a liking to immediately. Not only is the film very observant but you also have three likable characters where you'd wished you were invited to one of their walks or book readings. Though the movie is less subtle than Lost In Translation it is more brilliant in parts, IMO.

Bowling for Columbine 2002,  R)

Traffic 2000,  R)
62
Hero 2002,  PG-13)
Hero
Forget 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', this is the movie that should've been championed to the Western culture. With a formidable cast of Asian cinematic icons and absorbing cinematography, Ying Xiong unfolds more like poetry than theatre.
63
True Romance 1993,  R)
True Romance
I think it's the Tarantino factor. But Tony Scott delivers as he has been known to do in these genres. Spectacular cast; Walkens almost steals the show.

Memento 2000,  R)
Memento
Just saw Memento and I have to quickly write this down before it slips my mind. Okay, now where's that pen, where's that pen? Damn!!! A pen, I need a pen... Quickly, quickly, I need a pen... Alright, now write this down...

Now where am I? Okay, I'm in this review page but how did I get here? Am I suppose to say something? I've got a glass of wine in front of me but I don't seem drunk.

Saw Memento again for the first time.

Memento plays better with multiple viewings. It is a film that gives full reward to those who are patient and diligent. Not since Pulp Fiction had we witnessed a "dis-linear" storyline that does not serve as a gimmick but a purpose to relate to the subject character. There are fine performances from both the supporting casts of Moss and Pantoliano and from Guy Pearce who plays the the lead character of Leonard Shelby. The editing and direction is swift but yet perfect. Be prepared to get a total workout of your audio-visual and cognitive sensors.

uhhmmm, did I mention that it was a brilliant film?

Police Academy 1984,  R)
Police Academy
It may not be as funny as before watching it as a kid growing up in the 80s but still puts a smile on my face with its stupidity style of humor. Okay, it's still funny, hahaha
93
Spirited Away 2001,  PG)
94
The Exorcist 1973,  R)
95
The Passion of the Christ 2004,  R)
The Passion of the Christ
An amazing film through and through. Outstanding production values and custome designs, the cinematography a sight to behold, the score was extremely stirring, and the leading performances were remarkable, in particular Jim Caviezel in an Oscar worthy portrayal as Jesus Christ.

IMO, the The Passion of the Christ is an important film. The label of 'Masterpiece' may be contentious but it has thus far already made an imprint in cinematic history IMO. And it's not due to the religious content but rather for the film-making achievements from Mel Gibson.

While I would not place this movie in the 'highly recommended' section, it is however still a 'must see' film. A word of advice though, one must be strong in order to withstand the powerful onscreen images.
96
Better Luck Tomorrow 2002,  R)
Better Luck Tomorrow
Better Luck Tomorrow is a movie that I have a lot of time for. It is a striking movie that was both heartfelt and haunting in its conclusion. Had it not been for the great performance from Parry Chen and writer/director Justin Lin, the film would have suffered into a cliche about your average ethnic minority/high school/teenage angst. One of the scenes that I love and was most mesmerizing was the "graduation photo shoot" sequence.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 1984,  PG)
