My Favorite Movies
All time best films that I have seen. A hard to write list, but I've attempted it anyway! An Australian film 'Hunt Angels' belongs here but isn't available on Flixter. This is far from complete, but it gives some indication of my taste in films.

Fight Club 1999, R)
I'm about to break the rules. See the first rule is - I can't talk about it. And the second rule is - I can't talk about it. Tyler's gonna hate me, but its a sacrifice I'm willing to make. 'Fight Club' is David Fincher's masterpiece, thanks to the inspired book by Chuck Palahniuk and a great script by Jim Uhls. Its highly audacious with important commentary on the current state of the human male but also manages to be thrilling, blackly humorous and intriguing. If there are flaws, I couldn't tell you what they are, and if even if I could, I wouldn't care! Best film I've ever seen. |

Mulholland Drive 2001, R)
Brilliant. The second best film I've ever seen (only behind 'Fight Club' because I think that is more important for general society). Weird, wonderful and at times, jarring, but not without a dark sense of humour. Not for everybody as I think its the film equivalent of studying an artwork, like a painting. It will enthrall some and bore others. However, I really do believe that you can get a solid idea of what the film is about if you think of it in terms of 'broad-stroked ideas'. And even then, you may not feel you 'get it' but I really think that is irrelevant. Mystery or not, it remains haunting nonetheless. |

American Splendor 2003, R)
This is one of the most radical and original films of the last decade, but also one of the most over-looked. A drama-comedy that totally blurs the boundaries between non-fiction and fiction, it features brilliant performances, wonderful characters and a great design. This would easily be in my Top 5 Films of All Time. Go see this movie...NOW! |

Magnolia 1999, R)
Just saw this movie and I loved it. A compelling study of various characters, whats striking about the film is not one character is more important than another. To even call the characters with lesser dialogue 'minor characters' becomes ludicrous as they are an element to juxtapose and highlight part of the story and another character. Truly inspired film-making with an amazing ensemble cast and a gripping narrative that makes time matter little. Really amazing film-making at work here. |

A Clockwork Orange 1971, R)
One of Stanley Kubrick's best films and the most controversial, the film is engaging, brutal and darkly humorous. Sex, violence and Beethoven. You may be surprised at how much empathy you can have for such a disgusting character. Not even an assignment on dissecting this film brought it down. I actually learned to appreciate it more! |

Picnic at Hanging Rock 1975, PG)
Wonderful. Sublime. Unnerving. I love this film, some won't due to lack of resolution and its dreamy pace, which I liken to lazing about in the sun on a warm summer's day. The time just washes over you and you absorb the moments. The best Aussie film I've ever seen and what a proud achievement in film-making it is! |

Downfall (Der Untergang) 2004, R)
Hands down best film of 2005. Every now and again I get really excited when I've watched a film and know that its going to have be something REALLY good to top the one I've just watched. This film was controversial for its depiction of Hitler seeming 'human' at times and its actually scary that when you see these moments you understand how people fell under his influence. It also makes the scenes in which he is a full 'monster' totally terrifying and watching it in the cinema you feel you can't escape from this man in his claustrophobic den. I am very pleased that it was made by Germans with German actors as it adds a great sense of authenticity and explains to anyone who ever wondered 'what was Hitler like behind the scenes?' |

Donnie Darko 2001, R)
A cult classic and deservedly so. I believe there is no easy or simple way to interpret the film (in either the original or director's cut forms) and that's one of the reasons its so engaging. Also features brilliant use of music, if only more film-makers were conscious of using appropriate music. I like both the theatrical edition and director's cut equally, though I recommend watching the theatrical first so you can get a bit more tripped out. |

Collected Shorts of Jan Svankmajer 2005, Unrated)
It did not take much viewing of Svankmajer's work to call myself a fan. I was fortunate enough to find this at my Uni library and watched all of the shorts. Even though some of his work can drag a bit, it is utterly amazing with surreal elements that alternate between the nighmarish and the hilarious. Jan Svankmajer is a brillaint mind who has produced brillaint work and deserves to be recognised for his remarkable contributions to stop-motion animation and film in general. |
