Der Letzte Mann (The Last Laugh) 1924, PG)
Die Letzte Mann was a 1924 gem made by F. W. Murnau at time when it was greatly viewed as a success to the older generation who the world seem to be casting aside for younger, hipper, more modern thinking. The film shows the life, failure, loss and finally in a fantasy sequence, success of a doorman who is played by very able and flexible Emil Jannings. The Last Laugh (English title) show us that old people are worth much more then we sometimes treat them as. |

2001: A Space Odyssey 1968, G)
Stanley Kubrick single handedly reinvigorated the Science Fiction film with this amazing masterwork of technology vs. man, ritualistic beginnings of man and the power of myth. Exploring everything from space navigation to the very concept of time and space, the film was widely liked. Not always clear and sometimes downright "trippy" the film proved the cinema could be used to create wonder and awe once more. Semi avant grade in it's final forty minutes, the film has been mocked, praised, booed, heralded, criticized, lauded and honored, not bad for a little science fiction film the Kubrick never thought would catch on. |

This is another of John Hughes' brilliant writing tour de forces. He simply understands the pain and triumph of love, and as corny as it sounds his films are so feel good that we believe in ourselves more then when we started watching the film. Hughes was the master at teenage, lovesick, sentimental, intelligently articulated patter and character design. |

First, we must get past the fact that we are dealing directly with two of this nations best 20th Century writers, Lillian Hellman and Dashiell Hammett. Aside from that we get insights into the privacy and self respect that the Nazis devastated through out Germany, Austria, France, and all points east. It is something that is hard for some to wrap around, and understandably. This is not an easy film at any level and and it is not quaint and it is not small or minimal in any sense of imagination. This is a HUGE film by a HUGE director, the incomparably brilliant, talented, and deep Fred Zinnemann |

Safety Last! 1923, Unrated)Lloyd's masterpiece most assuredly. Not his first or last "scare" films. Though he tried many times and many ways, many believe he never topped hanging on the hands of a clock on the side of department store building he was forced to climb. Lloyd, has some wonderful bits aside from and we must also think of all the nostalgia of a twenties department store we privy to. Lloyd as always the over qualified athlete was able to make it look hard, where as Keaton made it easy looking. As a result we suffer far more with Lloyd's hardships. |

Animal Crackers 1930, G)
Perhaps the closest we will ever know what the Marxes were like on stage. The Coconuts, while not a bad film is too stodgy and ill paced to qualify. Animal Crackers on the other hand has the perfect blend of song, dance, comedy, plot, and jokes. This is how theatre stagings were for comedy in the 1920's. The brothers were quickly becoming and more liked among the privileged set. We also are allowed to see how the Marxes completely ripped their supporting players apart on stage and at the same time allowed them to funny even though they are saying very "unfunny" lines. |

A Face in the Crowd 1957, Unrated)
What price success? Is a man born to talent and fame or does he mold and develop under the hands of others? We get a little closer to that answer with A Face in the Crowd. Greatly helping the success of this analysis of the man known as Lonesome Rhodes and the shooting success and spiraling downfall of his career. Is evil inherent or does one accumulate it from media handed stardom. Andy Griffith is perfect as the megalomaniacal Rhodes who's seemingly nice disposition sours into resentful desire and greed for everything. At the height of influence, he crashes and burns into a pile of self pity. The tragedy of Lonesome is he loses not only his career, but his wife, his friends, his writer, his manager, his cast, his crew, his audience, his drive, his voice and his life. Written by the multi- talented Budd Schulberg ( Nothing Sacred, On the Waterfront) who also wrote songs and novels. Watch for the lovely and very sympathetic Patricia Neal, dry Walter Matthau, wise Burl Ives, and witty Bennett Cerf. |

The Wizard of Oz 1939, G)
Perhaps the ultimate "children's" film ever made, Oz helps us find the kid in all of us again. The mythical tale, based on Frank L. Baum's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz comes superbly to life in MGM's grand epic structure. Over fourteen screenwriters, five directors, scores of technicians, lighting , sound, and musicians brought the 1939 classic triumph together. Most likely Judy Garland's most beloved character turn, she was thought too old for the part, but she not only pulled it off, she made us redefine what it is to be young and scared and alone, and a good friend. |

Citizen Kane 1941, PG)
Citizen Kane is without much doubt the most debated and most revered film of anyone who has ever seriously taken up film study. A Director's film, it is lavish, over the top, expensive and expansive. It is a legend in the annals of Hollywood Studio Filmmaking in the early 1940's. Never has anything come to the screen like it and probably never will. A bold proposition that poked fun at real life tycoon William Randolph Hearst, it ripped apart big business and politics at a time when it was taboo to do so. |

Sherlock Jr. 1924, Unrated)Perhaps the most under appreciated of Keaton's comedies, the 1924 classic parodied detectives, films and idle mindedness all at the same time. It helped paint a picture of what film could do when not strapped down to straight forward narrative conventions. Keaton brought new life to the screen comedy and showed us more than ever that he was not above insulting or diminishing his pride to make us laugh. |

Metropolis 1927, PG-13)
It has been called the film that launched Science Fiction films as a genre, well if you do not count such films as a Trip to the Moon by George Milies. However, it can be said that it helped develop a sense of panic the shape and position modern man in technological times. Perhaps more a keen to Blade Runner or The Matrix in a even more technological turmoiled world shows us that Metropolis still holds as much weight in 2008 as it did in 1927. |

The Great Dictator 1940, G)
Chaplin was never ever one to shy away from being controversial. He also never one to take the medium of film lightly. Though he almost exclusively produced and directed comedies in his whirlwind Hollywood film career, he was nevertheless aware of the power and scope cinema could have. No surprise then that he chose as his victim of ridicule in 1940 the personage of Hitler the then revered German Dictator and the plight of the Jewish people of Europe. Called a traitor by some of his own friends at the time, Chaplin was not at all praising Hitler as some thought but was rather pointing out the obvious fact that the Hitler like all Dictators and Emperors would eventually lose the power that he took from his people and country. |

Modern Times 1936, G)
Modern Times is perhaps Chaplin's most apt and correct jab at modern life and modern man. Still as poignant as ever, the 1936 classic taught us the technology is not always a good thing and that even more important, most times the simple things are the best. The mocking of labor, communism, fascism, police, insanity, and prison life is nothing short of genius. |

Duck Soup 1933, Unrated)
Not since the Greeks and The Trojan Women have we seen such a complete lack and total disregard for the futility, fatality, fallacy, and fickleness of war and government. The Marxes pulled out all the stops in this 1933 parody on modern warfare. Freedonia is driven to the point of destruction by his Excellency Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho) because someone, who happens to be the Ambassador of the country Slyvainia calls him an upstart. The absurdness of this event plunges the countries into war and off we go to make fun of the battlefield and the likes of Washington, Paul Revere and on and on till the zany end. |

Horse Feathers 1932, Unrated)
This is the Marxes at their absolute height. By this point they had complete control over their films and indeed this began back with Monkey Business, rolled into Horse Feathers, and crashed and burned with the box office bomb of Duck Soup. But for the time being they could do nothing wrong or too outlandish. Looking back now Groucho's (Wagstaff, even the name is very risque) lines insult someone: men, women, children, college heads, intellectuals, and even mobsters. No one was above reproach. Despite these knocks at higher learning and smart asses, they were the darlings of the elite set and were extremely popular with college students. Norman Z. McLeod paces this perfectly with hardly a moment's pause or scene without a crack or visual pun or joke. |
