You don't have to be involved in the movie industry to get something out of this film, but it helps. It's a pretty intense film that does a good job of allowing you to laugh while putting you through a pretty serious and horrific situation. The acting in this is superb and so is the dialog. Great film.
McTiernan knows action. I believe action films are just as much of an artform as anything else. This film isn't going to enlighten anyone or anything, but for what it is - it is the best. I dare say it is my favorite movie. I don't judge it against arty movies or cerebral films or human dramas that make a statement about society. This film stands alone on its own merits as a beautiful work of action/sci-fi art. Quotable, thrilling, and fun.
Fuck me - what a brilliant piece of popcorn cinema. I loved this movie. It wasn't perfect, but it was damn near close. Save for a couple of little nagging problems, Cloverfield is near perfect for what it sets out to be.
People will compare this film to and rate it against all sorts of films - I think it needs to be rated within its genre. As a genre film, this one is just so incredibly tight and fun. The acting was great considering they were probably often reacting to green screens. The effects were fantastic - it's easier to make effects look good on the medium this was treated to look like it was filmed with than making effects look good in cinematic high resolution... they look less fake somehow.
It's not often a movie impresses me this much - I may need to watch it again, but my first instinct is that it's fucking great and (even though they borrowed ideas from other sources - everyone does, so what...) clever and original. I wish Hollywood would turn out more original movies like this rather than churn out sequels and remakes of asian films. It gives me hope and restores a little faith in American cinema.
Oh - and I was warned about motion sickness... I didn't get motion sick because I was too busy being blown away.
Wonderful romantic comedy. Koreans are fantastic with drama and here's proof. I love this film - especially the way the story comes full circle. However, it does suffer from the same thing many korean films suffer from... it's a little too long. They are a very detail-oriented culture.
Fantastic noir anime... it's rare to find a good anime that breaks away from the giant robot thing... there are some holes in this I suppose - it's not perfect (as the title suggest) - but it's entertaining and really well done. Darren Arronofsky (sp?) of Pi ripped off a scene frame for frame from this film and stuck it in Requiem for a Dream.
This is easily one of the most amazing films I've ever seen. Tsui Hark proves he's an incredible filmmaker - even though he's disproved this time and again in recent years. This film will stand as one of his best for me. Raw and gritty - a must-see.
