Quentin Tarantino originally wrote the role of Jules specifically for Samuel L. Jackson, however it was almost given to 'Paul Calderon' after a great audition. When Jackson heard this, he flew to LA and re-auditioned, getting back the part he was supposed to play. Calderon ended up with a cameo as Paul, the bartender.

New Year's Eve, 1981, the Lower East Side. Monica's having a party, but as late as 9, no one's there. She stews (and drinks). Folks are on their way, all looking for love, sex, or both. En route, paths cross, gambits misfire: a performance artist, her boyfriend until today and his long-time pal Lucy, two Long Island high-school girls, two punk rockers, a bartender, a Scottish painter who's lousy in bed, a pretty face named Jack who runs when women say they love him, his cute but clumsy date Cindy, two trendy vamps, a loquacious cabby, the man-crazed Hillary, and Elvis Costello. Nearly everybody smokes, and nearly everybody scores. And all get who and what they deserve.

Each character has a musical instrument in the soundtrack that corresponds to them, i.e. when we see Margot throughout the movie, we hear a harp. Director Wes Anderson attributes this to a "Peter and the Wolf" influence.

In this film we follow the lives of the characters and learn how they came to know each other. Throughout the film, the characters (Sean in particular) exude somewhat of an indifference toward the people and events around them. For example, despite being set at a college, not one of the characters is ever shown attending a class.

The exterior of the sports shop is actually a local bowling alley; the same bowling alley that appears in the beginning of another great film Kingpin (1996) !

On a night between filming days, Robert Rodriguez put on a rock concert at a local nightclub. His own band was the opening act, and the headliner was Bruce Willis and his band, The Accelerators. The concert was attended by Sin City's cast and crew, as well as the cast and crew of A Scanner Darkly (2006), which was filming nearby at the same time. All profits from the show were donated to charity.

Boosted by critical acclaim and audience word-of-mouth, this modest feature film (with only a $4 million budget) became a comparative box office hit returning over $45M in box office receipts from the US alone.

The tremendous hype around the release of this film resulted in several rumors about the plot. The most widely circulated was the mistaken rumor that in the film, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman played married psychiatrists having affairs with their patients.

During rehearsals Brad Pitt and Edward Norton found out that they both hated the new Volkswagen Beetle with a passion. In the film they are seen banging a Volkswagen Beetle with baseball bats. However, after the film's DVD release Pitt is quoted in the commentary section of the DVD as saying he had a change of heart about his feelings for the new VW Beetle.

Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton) returns from prison to find his younger brother, Danny (Edward Furlong), caught in the same web of racism and hatred that landed him in prison. After Derek's father is killed in the line of duty by a minority, Derek's view of mankind is altered, but while in prison, he discovers that there is good and bad in every race. The task before him now is to convince Danny of his newfound enlightenment.

Edward Norton gained 30 pounds of muscle for his role.
