Willard 2003, PG-13)
Completely underrated, and not so much a horror movie as it is a quiet psychological thriller for people who like rats and are afraid of people. Crispin's characterization of Willard is very genuine and heart-breaking. Every time I watch this film, I see some little detail or nuance of his performance that I hadn't noticed before. |

Thomas Harris wrote one good book, and that was Silence of the Lambs. They made a really excellent movie out of it. Sadly, however, it's given people some unreasonably high expectations. Enjoy Hannibal Rising for what it is: a frequently goofy horror/thriller that is an excuse to show off Gaspard Ulliel to English-speaking audiences. While biting off a man's cheeks, no less. |

Fast Sofa 2001, R)
A good film with a lot more depth than might occur to casual viewers. It doesn't really solidify until Crispin's character, Jules, enters the picture, however, and that's a pity. If only the beginning could be stronger. (The book is also not bad, although Crispin's interpretation of Jules is far more interesting.) |

One of Woody Allen's best truly silly films, it's as enjoyable now as it was when I was 11, though for entirely different reasons. Even the choice of music (Prokofiev's Lt. Kije suite) is a subtle joke. Nuances like this are balanced by Allen's usual slapstick and some of his more amusing pseudo-philosophy. |

Okay, I have to give this 5 stars for being grotesquely, stupendously, unashamedly, gloriously crap. It's just so hilariously terrible, I'm beyond astounded. I'm seriously impressed. It's the kind of awfulness that transcends bad and comes out as purely awesome. Annoying kids get their comeuppance, Crispin Glover is both manic and retarded with a southern accent while practicing over-the-top mutilation on the human body... and practically every other line is a bad pun. Wow. |
