My most favourite film ever. This is it. The one. I can't even describe why I love this film, but the music and the acting and everything just seems to click. Cameron Crowe is a golden god, and nothing he does from this moment on will come close to this.
Before Batman Begins, this was the superhero movie to beat (and before this, it was the original Superman.). Light-years better than the first. Peter Parker finally smartens up and gets the girl.
I don't care if there's no magic or dragons or stuff like that, this is the best fantasy film ever made. Perfect for everybody. And the swordfight on the Cliffs of Insanity...you just have to see it.
Just saw this again last night for the first time in seven years. Wow. While known for his comtemporary cop shows, I think this is Michael Mann's crowning achievement. One of the coolest musical scores I've ever heard. Highlight is the final sequence. A must-see.
Awesome childhood favourite. I picked it up a couple of years ago, not having seen it since I was a kid. I could still recite five-minute stretches of dialogue along with the movie. Kick-ass kids flick.
I have believed, still believe, and will always believe that a man can fly because of this. One of those seminal films that you discover in childhood and keep with you your entire life. A gargantuan origin film of actual epic proportions. Words can't begin to describe the legacy this has brought Christopher Reeve. He'll always be the one true Superman and will be missed by all.
Like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, this is horribly dated, but it is an interesting take on the haunted house genre that manages to scare you with no fancy special effects. Sure, there are effects, but they're more subtle than usual.
A simple revenge tale with lots of style. Next to Sin City, this looks the most like a comic book on screen. Haven't read the original source material, but this looks a lot like I imagine it would be.
Cheesy, hilarious, completely cheap and stupid and gory beyond belief. I love this movie! Before Peter Jackson had money, he excelled in this kind of crap. (Dig that opening shot where the rat monkey is found.) Classic.
One of my favourite novels is adapted into one of my favourite movies. Yay me! A little dark for a kids film (This is an F***in Disney movie?), but still captures the magic of the original story easily.
It may be horribly dated in places, sure, but you can't beat an emotionless alien clone movie with Mr. Spock in the cast. Come on. Well paced, with lots of scares, and a nice ending.
What The Princess Bride did for fairy tales and the fantasy genre in general, this movie does for film noir and the action genre. I knew what to expect going in and it still blew me away. Admittedly more geared toward the rabid movie-fans.
Very interesting take on a Bradbury-like theme of a father-son relationship. Well done Tim Burton film. If you know me, then you know why this is on the list.
Next to In the Mouth of Madness, this is John Carpenter's most pleasant surprise. You'd never expect him to pull off something like this. Funny as hell if you like the kung-fu ghost romantic comedy action epic kind of thing.
What is fantasy and what is reality, and can you bring one into the other? While the film doesn't explain how or why, it doesn't have to. It's a solid mind-fuck, and should not be ignored if you want an intelligent horror film.
Creepy, claustrophobic, moody as hell. In between the paranoia and the kick-ass effects (done in the early eighties by Rob Bottin, the guy who did the better werewolf movie, The Howling, so FUCK YOU, CGI!) and Wilfred Brimley (the Quaker Oatmeal guy) going nucking futs, it's a hell of a ride.
This kicks ass! One of my most favourite movies ever. One of the first films (after The Shining) to use Steadicam a lot. It' s a little different, and ambiguous towards the end, but it's worth seeing. Only one thing screws it up, it's more of a artistic pet peeve than anything else; watch it and try to figure out what.
You can keep the admittedly cool and slick Ocean's Eleven and all the other caper films out there. This one is superior to them all. Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland are a great duo.
It's rare that an adaptation of a novel, and a "beloved children's classic" to boot, manages to at least come close to the magic that it casts upon its readers. I've taken the book in Grade 5, as I'm sure a lot of you also have (and if you've haven't, then I truly feel sorry for you). And as much as I loved and could relate to it back then, I believe that this exceeds the original source material by far. Good performances by all, and the CGI effects are wisely kept to a minimum (despite what the trailer would have you believe). If you don't have an imagination, then go find some pseudo-intellectual piece of drabble. You won't find what you're looking for here.
By far the awesomest movie experience I've ever had. Despite the talkiness of Death Proof, this is the most fun you'll have at the movies this year. Can't describe it, so go see it.
