Steven Spielberg's UFO masterpiece. Made me cry on first viewing in 1978 - the end is very emotional. Special effects were magical on the big screen. My favourite film of all time as it still gets to me.
A joy to watch. Funny, exciting, thrilling. "Star Wars" has everything for all ages. You feel so great after seeing it for the first time. John William's music is so right for the film, and the Oscar winning special effects are still tremendous. Alec Guiness adds a touch of class.
A truly great sequel (or rather continuation) to the brilliant original film. Wonderful visuals. The excellent script gives the characters more depth. Yoda is an interesting addition that works well. The Hoth sequences give the film a cold and harsher feel.
Fantastic action adventure from Lucas, Spielberg and Ford. Great set-pieces and some funny moments, particularly the exhilarating opening sequence. Fantastic film!
I can see what they tried to do with this first ST feature: make Star Trek meet "2001" and create a sci-fi epic (the budget was huge!) Even though its a flawed film, it remains my favourite and has some spectacular moments.
A very enjoyable end to the saga; somewhat of a re-run of "Star Wars" though with lots more rubber aliens. I love that end space battle and the Ewoks are ok. Features my favourite "Star Wars" music.
John Carpenter's 'slasher' hit movie of the late 70's. Features a great OTT performance from Donald Pleasance, and introduced us to Jamie Lee Curtis. Qutie creepy when you see it as a 12 year old. Famous use of steady-cam, and oh that tinkly theme by Carpenter.
A cracking sci-fi film, starring a robot called Robbie, a pre comedy Leslie Neilsen, and "Monsters from the ID!" Electronic tonalities add to the 50's 'midnite movie' feel.
Spielberg does UFOs again; this time its a smaller story of friendship between a boy and a stranded alien. Lovely film, and quite moving. Once again, John Williams' score provides a beautiful backdrop to the story. The kids are wonderful.
Peter Jackson's first installment of Tolkien's classic book. For me, the best of the three films: a nice mix of highbrow epic battles, towers and magic, with some fun hobbit stuff. Elijah Wood is fantastic in the role of Frodo.
Carpenter again, this time in futuristic sci-fi mode. Kurt Russell is fantastic as the anti-hero. Reminds me of classic westerns in style. Cheap film, but very effective.
Yes, more Carpenter! This re-make of the 50s sci-fi film really hits home with its gloriously gory effects by Rob Bottin. The tension is incredible - who it the thing!?! arrrgh!
A silly but great fun sci-fi B movie - one for a late evening with all the lights off! A martian alien monster thing attacks crew members on a rocket ship. Man in a monster rubber suit? Tick! 50s tinkly/wobbly sci-fi music? Tick! Model rocket ship? Tick! Scientist women in pointy bras? Tick! :)
Disney's attempt to do video games in the movies. A noble try, but it failed to light up the box office (everyone went to see "ET" instead.) The acting is ok but this film is all about the visuals, and they are still awesome.
"Ghostbusters" was funny, silly, exciting and scary, and became the biggest film of 1984. Featured some of America's most talented comedy actors and a slobbish green thing that slimed people! Fab!
Oh wow, John Williams again...those opening bars of his "Superman" theme gets the hair up on the back of my neck even today. Epic blockbuster cinema with a fine performance by newcomer Christopher Reeve. Gene Hackman was fun as the comedy villian.
Following "Tron", this was another attempt at video game cinema, from the tv people who did Dallas! Lance Guest gets a high score on an arcade game and next thing he knows, its off to the stars for a real space war...with an Irish alien! Good to watch over Xmas holidays. CGI looks dated but somehow pleasing.
For me, Still the best 007 adventure, although I like most of them. Roger Moore takes on a meglo-maniac who lives underwater and steals nuclear submarines. The helicopter + Lotus chase is awesome!
The first hit film from 1990 introduces us to four mutant turtles who live in the sewers of New York, love pizza and fight crime with ninja skills: those skills having been passed on by a talking rat! Somehow, it really works. An entertaining if cheap looking action film. The animatronic turtles are nicely done by Henson, and the action is fun to watch - especially if you saw the original *uncut* US version.
For the most part an enjoyable return to "Star Wars", allowing George Lucas to tell his back story. The film sags a bit in the middle when the group get stuck on Tatooine, but the rest of the film zooms along at a great pace and is lovely to look at. Features the best lightsabre duel, and I *LIKE* Jar Jar Binks!
Excellent sequel to the landmark original. Director James Cameron takes the whole thing up a notch with some spectacular set-pieces. ILM's groundbreaking CGI is perfect for this summer hit.
