wow what a tremendous movie. From start to finish totally enthralling. well built cast, amzing backdrops, attention to details. was suprised at start with an 18 rating but that was quickly realised, this is no ordinary comic book. Getting your head around an alternate 1985 is quite fun as historic events are depicted in a changed manner by old news reels - absolute quality. can't find any superlatives than do this movie justice it is quite literally brilliant. It's one of those for me that i wanted to sit and watch again and again and again and again.....
The best star trek film ever. I'm a big trekkie and i never thought i would say that. My old favourite was first contact. From start to finish this is nothing but exhilarating. Great story to kick-start a stalling beloved well franchise....
a bit of an origin story that is re-written as a trek favourite "time travel" spin is put on this - in a very crucial and necessary way. we quickly see how our main characters (spock and kirk) meet up, where bones comes from, uhura, checkov, sulu and of course scotty. the humour in this is absolutely first rate, with gags to please the biggest trekkie or the non-trekkie alike. The gags are intricate and work really well with what's going in like in any action movie. not wanting to talk anymore on this as i'll end up giving too much away.
the characters and actors: - chris pine pulls off james kirk's charasmatic, never give up-all-for nothing attitude with a t. no pun intended. zach quinto is spock. from the subtle little eyebrow raises to crouching down on the transporter pad. karl urban was a surprise but great cast as mccoy whingey, over-stating lke the original bones is superb. john cho starts well as sulu, we get to see him fence right away. yelchin is superb at getting the russian accent required to make checkov so bloody funny. zoe saldana is a better uhura than nichelle nichols, strange but true. last but not least simon pegg as scotty, simon's scottish accent is far from the cringiing james doohan's (rip), but the humour injected into the film from it is almost mike myers-esque, brilliant.
I can onlly hope that jj stays at the helm for another couple of new trek movies, there are 79 or something episodes of the original series, surely we can squeeze a couple of movies out of them.....
