Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans
The most perfect piece of cinema made at the end of the silent era. Never has it been bettered.
2
The Apartment 1960,  Unrated)
The Apartment
Bittersweet and some of the best dialogue ever heard in American cinema. Billy Wilder is a god.
3
The General 1926,  Unrated)
The General
How can you not love this movie? The funniest thing ever committed to film.
4
Badlands 1973,  PG)
Badlands
Lyrical, moving and far better than any of its many imitators - Natural Born Killers et al. Not the original this, but the best. Haunting.
5
Apocalypse Now 1979,  R)
Apocalypse Now
Premiered on the day I was born! The best metaphysical action war movie ever. Every frame is mad and utterly brilliant.
6
Stray Dogs (Sag-haye velgard) 2004,  Unrated)
Stray Dogs (Sag-haye velgard)
A truly magnificent piece of film making. Heart-wrenching, lyrical and controversial. Everything cinema should be
7
The Third Man 1949,  Unrated)
The Third Man
Take away Citizen Kane and Orson Welles is still a genius - for even though he didn't officially direct this, his hands are all over it. The best noir ever made. Vienna never looked so dirty.
8
The Wages of Fear 1953,  Unrated)
The Wages of Fear
This is so exciting. Puts most action movies to shame. And the more I watch it, the more exciting it becomes. Don't be put off by the first half hour (my favourite section of the movie, oddly) this is cracking cinema.
9
City Lights 1931,  G)
City Lights
Chaplin's finest moment. Full of heartbreaking beauty.
