The Chorus (Les Choristes) 2005,  PG-13)
The Chorus (Les Choristes)
I don't deny that this movie builds on a sappy emotive storyline...However, for it to work, it needed something called magic...I think it came in the form of the boy Jean-Baptiste Maunier...And I must admit that it was nice to see such a film, as I've had enough of movies that show female women who go to the 'hood' to teach as new teachers and change the world....A story of a tired man who thinks teaching is a misery, only to be rejuvenated by the unexpected and interesting challenges he faces in a new school...This is a new kind of twist...

The Kite Runner 2007,  PG-13)
The Kite Runner
I was rather keen to find out if this film would be as I imagined it to be when I was reading it...It certainly satisfied me though you really ought to read this great book to appreciate it for the subtle thoughts that filled Amir's mind...Still I enjoyed this movie and the boy who acted as Hassan was great casting...

Stand by Me 1986,  R)
Stand by Me
Although this movie moves at a snail's pace, it allows us to understand life in the non-urban parts of America and the true values of friendship shown through simple but poignant moments.
9
The Iron Giant 1999,  PG)
The Iron Giant
An animation worth watching for its story of friendship....just a tad little shy of being a classic due to a lack of memorable lines or cinematic brilliance...
10
Amores Perros 2000,  R)
Amores Perros
A brilliant take on how man leads a life which has two faces...one which shows compassion and the other which is selfish and completely void of humanity and feelings..I loved how the director made a statement by including dogs in all three stories to show how we humans are no different from dogs...Superb attention was paid to how the stories were linked and told...Worth my 2.5 hours!...
11
Marley & Me 2008,  PG)
Marley & Me
I am really quite biased with my ratings for this film...Typically this film would only garner a 3.5 stars because of its predictable plot...but it had so much nostalgia for me...this film would strike a chord with anyone who has owned or has a dog...And I must say that the choice of casting Aniston and Wilson for the wife and husband roles was fantastic as they seemed to be suited for portraying the average couple...However, we all know who the true stars of the film are and those 20 odd labbies did a brilliant job of bringing the biggest laughs and most heart wrenching moments...I absolutely loved this film!...
12
Million Dollar Baby 2004,  PG-13)
Million Dollar Baby
This was the best film I watched last year.
13
Dead Poets Society 1989,  PG)
Dead Poets Society
You want to know what it means to be a REALLY passionate teacher...Watch this!...My bible!..
14
Highlander 1986,  R)
Highlander
I just simply love this first film...Too bad the sequels nor the TV show were as good...
15
Cinema Paradiso (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso) 1988,  R)
Cinema Paradiso (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso)
Somehow I felt a connection with this movie..As a young boy, I too looked at films as something real...I never regretted paying $12 to rewatch this movie at a film fest just to view the uncut edition which is about 40 - 50 minutes longer...You'll be filled with serenity ringing in your head when you leave the theatre...
16
Children of Heaven (Bacheha-Ye aseman) 1997,  PG)
Children of Heaven (Bacheha-Ye aseman)
I was close to tears, but my mum and sister were like ready to pour bucket loads of em at the end...A great take on how poverty makes one's every single penny count...I loved the exploration of brother-sister love which is rarely a theme for movie-making...Kudos to the director for coming up with a story based around just a pair of shoes...
17
Persepolis 2007,  PG-13)
Persepolis
This is what makes movies so powerful in its purest element...To tell one's story....Muslim friends be warned - some of the things depicted in this film might offend you....Other than that, this is a superb autobiographical representation of Marjane Satrapi's growing up years during the Islamic Revolution in Iran and her subsequent time spent in western Europe as an adolescent...The movie tries to show us the challenges faced by Iranians who did not agree with the Islamic fundamentalism changes that were facing their country and the sense of loss migrating Iranians felt in foreign countries...I simply loved the old-fashioned animation and sharp b/w colours predominating the film...
18
Auf der Anderen Seite (The Edge of Heaven) (On the Other Side) 2007,  Unrated)
Auf der Anderen Seite (The Edge of Heaven) (On the Other Side)
this is a complete film...a kind of film that leaves you with so much thought about death, second chances and destiny...whilst several films with intertwining characters from different walks of life have been made in the past decade or so, most of em can't come close to achieving the same surprise or emotional effect at junctions of the story...Poignant, right from the start...
19
Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) 2007,  PG-13)
Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly)
I think this is a masterpiece in film-making!...And I wasn't even aware it was based on true events...I had certain misgivings at the start with the blurred visions and all...But as the story moved on, I realised what the director's intent was...He wanted us to feel as confused and irritated as the protagonist!...I am a little appalled that Almaric didn't receive the same level of recognition as Schnabel for this film internationally..He did a marvellous job portraying someone who was a vegetable..Each wink really did mean something and it took an artist's talent to bring it out..Poetically moving...This has been the best movie I've seen in quite a while!...
