One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Perfect. Cleverly adapted from the book with flawless casting.

12 Angry Men (Twelve Angry Men) 1957,  Unrated)
12 Angry Men (Twelve Angry Men)
A great reminder that you don't need a huge budget and lots of fancy special effects to make a compelling movie. Simple and hugely atmospheric: a brilliant script, top-notch acting and excellent directing make this film a classic.

Chinatown 1974,  R)
Chinatown
Perfectly constructed film with a wonderfully noir atmosphere. The entire film is pretty much all build-up for a two-word punchline to a very bleak joke.
4
Sin City 2005,  R)
Sin City
Slick, gritty, atmospheric, with great characters, a fantastic look, smart dialogue and really engaging storylines. Damn near perfect.
5
1984 (Nineteen Eighty-Four) 1984,  R)
1984 (Nineteen Eighty-Four)
Chilling, faithful adaptation of a truly great novel. Uncomfortable to watch, in all the right ways. Burton scared the crap out of me. 2 + 2 = 5 stars.
6
The Boondock Saints 2000,  R)
The Boondock Saints
Well-acted, stylish, funny, high-octane, compelling. Dafoe really sparkles in this film.
7
American Beauty 1999,  R)
American Beauty
Spacey steals this completely. Perfect commentary on suburban malaise.
8
The Usual Suspects 1995,  R)
The Usual Suspects
Great cast, great story, great atmosphere. Works for me.
9
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004,  R)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
One of the most charming little gems of a movie I've ever seen. The casting is perfect, and the film veers effortlessly between quirky comedy and moments of surprising poignancy. Plus there's a deleted scene of Willem Defoe on fire.
