Blow
* Some Spoilers*
It's a dazzlingly complex film that focus on how narcotraffic was growing in the richest country of the world. If there are people to buy something there will be also some people to sell it. So Blow tells about the fantastic true story of George Jung, showing how he became millionaire after meeting the infamous Pablo Escobar and how everything was blowing in George's life until his sad destiny. The movie takes a look at the world of drugs during the 70's to early 80's. And about the characters and the acting . . . geez! Penelope and Depp are simply brilliant! Ray Liota (as Jung's father) is also amazing in his character showing compassion and feeling which gives this movie a clever turn. Fascinating, this is one of the best bio and related drug movies lately!

In the Name of the Father 1993,  R)
In the Name of the Father
The movie shows a father and a son coming to an intimate understanding of each other through shared sufferings. All these sufferings began when n IRA bomb explodes, killing people in Ireland. And the police was forced, by public demands for justice, to turn to the most likely suspects without regard for their guilt or innocence. So Gerry, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, and his friend Paul became the prime targets mainly because they were two poor guys whom just arrived in London from Belfast. However, the movie sharpen this political theme focusing on how those historical events impact on the relationship between Gerry and his father.

Scent of a Woman 1992,  R)
Scent of a Woman
Excellent movie, for sure, great character development, especially. But it's the combination of direction and acting which make this movie even better. Al Pacino is totally convincing as the blind Colonel and definitely deserved his Oscar. He plays that kind of character that's loud, rude, uninhibited and crassly funny. The Colonel Frank is the type of person that makes a scene in a place and doesn't seem to realize it. The film manages to be very entertaining and we're able to watch Frank dancing the tango with a young woman in one of the most memorable moments of the movie. And O'Connell gave the perfect "quiet" performance so that Pacino could shine. Worth watching mainly because of Al Pacino himself. This is one of his best movies ever! Great acting, excellent story. A movie you should want to see over and over!!!

Mo li hua kai (Jasmine Women) 2004,  Unrated)
Mo li hua kai (Jasmine Women)
When I've watched the trailer of this movie, I was not really excited, because the story line it seemed to be so original and it really is. The general idea of the movie is very unique and really interesting. The movie shows stories of the destiny and pain of three women generations through 30's, 60's and 80's. Although, just a few people can understand this story without prejudicy just because it's an asian production. However, it's a must see for every human being who still has a heart and a tribute to all Mothers and everything we need to do by ourselves ... mainly bearing and raising our children 'alone'.
The literal translation of the chinese title is: "Jasmine blossoms". After watching this masterpiece, I definitely put this movie on my favs list of all time!

The Sea Inside (Mar Adentro) (The Sea Within) 2004,  PG-13)
The Sea Inside (Mar Adentro) (The Sea Within)
It is one of the best Amenábar movies based on a true story about Ramón Sampedro who suffered an accident in the sea and then he became quadriplegic for twenty-eight years without the right to decide about his Own Life! The story shows the main character needs to fight in court for his right of practicing euthanasia through an association that defends the FREEDOM OF CHOICE agains the social hypocrisys! It's all about a man's struggle to control his OWN destiny. And Amenábar also used the camera perfectly, capturing Ramón's feeling of isolation without suffocating us the watchers. Aww... the scene in which Ramón has a dream and he's flying across the Galician countryside, brushing the rolling green hills and forests, and finally landing on the beach, is probably one of the most beautiful scenes! Mar Adentro really deserves to be seen

Empire of the Sun 1987,  PG)
Empire of the Sun
Christian Bale, as Jim, plays a child living with his British parents in China during the WWII. Bale rendered an amazing and credible performance, appearing almost every scene. While Malkovich is also great in conveying the harsh realities of prolonged prison life. At the beginning, Jim was trying to safe himself and then he met two american guys called Frank and Baise, this one played by Malkovich. Eventually, all three end up in a camp, next to a Japanese air base. From there, we can see one of the most memorable scenes in a movie, when Jim and a Japanese lil soldier sing the Japan hymn together. The movie shows mainly Jim's point-of-view about everything that happens with him during the war. So it tells the story from the perspective of a child. And it is not like other films about war. Very original like Spielberg can be it! And deeply touching too! Empire of the Sun is a movie about heroism in the face of adversity and this story will remain in your memories!

Will Smith always rocks! And ...no words to explain how amazing example of human being Gardner really is to all of us.

The Kite Runner 2007,  PG-13)
The Kite Runner
This movie is also one of the best ones I have ever seen in a long time. It captures all the strengths and weaknesses of human nature and it touches us the watchers. Yes, I know some people can argue about the book being better. And to be honest, I don't know which one I like better, the book or the movie. However, the movie preserves the essence of the book too. Mainly, because the author was working along with the director and they both turned it in a brilliant movie! Actually, at the first time friends recommended this movie to me, I wasn't in the mood to see it but thinking about the world political climate nowadays, this movie should not be missed.

A Love Song for Bobby Long 2004,  R)

Shirley Valentine 1989,  R)
Shirley Valentine
I have seen this movie so many times that I actually know every line by heart. This is one of those films that should be seen by anyone that has at any point felt that there is something missing in their life or that they've had missed opportunities as you will have great empathy with the main character Shirley Valentine. It's an interesting comment about every social prejudicy women suffer and must forget their dreams in order to be a servent of their husbands and children. At this point, all women die inside. But Shirley shows us how to reborn beginning a whole new life full of hope as she tries to make her dreams come true, and she does... Even though it might be quite funny in some scenes, it is essential for the well-being of the movie, and it makes it work in an unique way. Shirley Valentine is definetely a "Must Seen" !

Less Than Zero 1987,  R)
Less Than Zero
Brad is a partygoer and a friend of mine told me she saw him. I need to watch this movie again and pay more attention on it! Robert Downey Jr. performance is simply wonderful playing a junkie (and it seems he became inspired by this story) and if you know someone who is addicted watching this movie you'll be able to understand and even help those you really care. The story is very well done and it shows the awful truth about this underworld and in my opinion is the best movie about it far better than The Basketball Diaries with Di Caprio, Traffic (a blockbuster movie with a lot of merchandise only) and even Christiane F. (the book in this case is better). You become involved with Julian (R.Downey Jr.) problems. He suffer a lot and it's very sad how he lose his friends, his family, his beliefs, his dignity and he even need to become a prostitute to pay his never ending debt with the drug dealers. He could be your friend, your brother or even your friend. He's a human being like any other but he is a victim of the traffic world who lost 'everything'!

The movie shows more than I can write here so you'd better watching it, believe me it's worthwhile !

Y Tu Mamá También 2001,  R)
Y Tu Mamá También
"Y Tu Mama Tambien" tells a story of a woman who suddenly finds herself facing death and ... it also shows this way she finds more life mainly after meeting too boys played by Luna and Bernal. There's a bit of a fun trip on the way to "Heaven's Mouth" beach in Mexico. The fun is not in the destiny but maily on the way though. There are also a deep meaningful through the story and it shows people living to the fullest during the trip. It is a wonderful movie to watch, whether or not you are a native Spanish speaker; it contains many controversial subjects but helps you open your eyes. I cannot say anymore than this, for I do not want to spoil the movie. You will just have to watch it and find out for yourself how good it really is!

Vicky Cristina Barcelona 2008,  PG-13)
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
"Life is the ultimate work of art." And what an interesting tagline, isn't it?! This film is simply brilliant, it is simple but brilliant! The plot focuses on two American college friends, polar opposites on the subject of love, as they vacation in Barcelona for the summer. Arriving at their destiny, they met Juan (played by Bardem) and after some time the girls also met Penelope Cruz as the passionate Maria. Both are great artists whose paintings are deep as their personalities. Besides interesting conversational dialog and narrating monologue, Woody Allen's script include such originality as Juan's father not wanting to publish his beautiful poetry in attempts to get back at the world. When Vicky finally asks why, Juan becomes philosophical. There are lots to think about, to feel and to digest! This motion picture is a brilliant one!

Phoebe in Wonderland 2007,  PG-13)
Phoebe in Wonderland
Firstly, I had no idea what the story was about so I wasn't really thrilled about spending a beautiful day inside watching a film. However, it was a pleasant surprise to get the opportunity to watch such a great movie! The cast is supportive and the acting is brilliant throughout the film. Mainly the little girl who was a great surprise! Because Elle Fanning is amazing in her role and I must say it was one of the best performances I have ever seen by a child on the screen who's an amazing little actress and who really captures the spirit of Phoebe beautifully, and even Felicity Hoffman and Bill Pullman do an excellent job portraying the conflicted parents, trying to understand their young daughter. Thanks to the filmmakers because the movie not only was thoroughly entertained, but it made my day even better!

Sin noticias de Dios (Don't Tempt Me) 2001,  R)
Sin noticias de Dios (Don't Tempt Me)
Sin Noticias de Dios make us think about the limits of what's good or bad and includes Gael and Penelope Cruz together. Aww... that scene showing Penelope dancing is so awesome! And the soundtrack is also great, mainly "Kung-Fu Fighting" ... unforgettable!

White Nights
A well-done script showing a bit about the Cold War. Art has no limits and any frontiers like human beings shouldn't take borderlands so serious. Love the dance scenes ...

The Diary of Anne Frank 1959,  PG)
The Diary of Anne Frank
It shows the true reality of the sickness of nazism during the WWII and its consequences in a lil' world of a jewish family where Anne Frank belongs to. So we can see this teenager girlie's point of view of the sufferings war brings.

The Terminal

Shine 1996,  PG-13)
Shine
It's based on the true story of David Helfgott, a genious piano player who suffered a mental breakdown early in his life mainly because of his demanding father who was jealous and abusive as well. His father probably has more mental problems than his son and it was a bad influence to his career. However, father and son were both obssessed by the music. And the masterful performance of Geoffrey Rush opened doors to him in the cinema and he also won an award of Best Actor for his performance because he deserved it. The story is pretty interesting and the cinematography very well done.

Gia
The film is amazing, specially the casting! It's based on a true story and tells about a supermodel who used drugs to dull the pain of the emptiness and hurt in her life. This film showcases Angelina's talent, her acting is simply amazing! I've cried my eyes out for many reasons as the story touched me in many different ways! It is a journey of a person full of life and love inside her heart! It can be a sad story to tell, but nevertheless it's told well and it's told in a way that makes you feel witness to her life. Although you won't be smiling when it's over, you can be very much impressed not only by the drugs power of destruction, but also the dangerous way people indifference can kill us like the Gia's mother absence of caring. The movie is very interesting and never boring, but it's deeply sad like the real life can be sometimes.

A River Runs Through It
It is not just a story about fishing or family matters. It is mainly a life lesson! Redford directed this movie based on Norman McLean's autobiography and it turned it to a masterpiece! Certainly, the book and the movie are quite different as it always happens, but each one has its merits The movie describes a life lived. Life goes on slowly, like the movie shows, and life is lived moment by moment. And the story goes towards an emotional narrative and the landscaping is breathtaking! If you enjoy watching movies with a great plot, beautiful scenery, extraordinary acting and amazing cinematography, this would be the one to choose!

Good Bye, Lenin 2002,  R)
Good Bye, Lenin
The film captured the atmosphere wonderfully, made you feel transported to Berlin in the fall of Communism in East Germany. It is a satire of those historical events and turning them into a beautiful tale of patriotic and filial devotion. And there are some classic moments in this film that are very memorable, and others that build up the tension incredibly. Alex - the main character played by Daniel Brühl - shows how much he love his mother by trying to prevent her from suffering about the Berlin Wall has fallen together with the German socialism. The story, screen writing, direction, and acting are magnificent. It is one of my favorites German movies and it shows political overtones that is simply brilliant! This movie will remain in your mind!
