GoodFellas
my favorite movie, a mob epic and scorsese's masterpiece
2
Out of the Past 1947,  Unrated)
Out of the Past
the quintessential noir, a style that's had a huge influence on everyone from scorsese and tarantino to the coen brothers and david lynch, not to mention french new wave. robert mitchum gives his most perfect lethargic and world-weary performance

9
The Man Who Would Be King 1975,  PG)
The Man Who Would Be King
god's holy trousers! two rogues get more than they bargained for when they set out to be kings. a fantastic road movie and my favorite adventure film. originally conceived as a vehicle for bogart and gable tho it's hard to imagine anyone being better than connery and caine are here. it may not be 'politically correct' but i love this movie! and isn't it all about the dangers of imperialism? still relevant today i think
10
Key Largo 1948,  Unrated)
Key Largo
rocco is my favorite robinson gangster and this is bogey and bacall's best picture together. a great script, fantastic claustrophobic atmosphere and terrific performances. lionel barrymore is hilarious and claire trevor breaks your heart. i love this movie more than i can ever say!
11
The Godfather 1972,  R)
The Godfather
shakesperean tragedy in forties new york. michael's transformation from idealistic youth to mob boss is incredible to watch. he can run but he can't hide from his fate. heartbreaking.
12
The Godfather, Part II 1974,  R)
The Godfather, Part II
the 'second half' of the godfather is still my favorite, if only for deniro's supremely confident performance in the part originated by brando. i think pacino does his best work in these 2 films. but the scene that takes my breath is deniro on the rooftop, masterfully done! best sequel ever
13
The Maltese Falcon 1941,  PG)

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
get away from my burro!!

it may not be the best hitchcock but it's my favorite...marvellously creepy, surprises at every turn
17
Vertigo 1958,  PG)
Vertigo
hitchcock's finest for my money and maybe jimmy's best performance. masterpiece! there, i said it
18
Bonnie and Clyde 1967,  R)
Bonnie and Clyde
i can't count how many times i've seen this but i can always watch it again. clearly influenced by the french new wave, with every actor giving a knockout performance; it launched the careers of faye dunaway and gene hackman as well as making beatty a star to be taken seriously. estelle parsons gives a memorable performance for which she won an oscar, gene wilder makes an impressive film debut in a small role, and michael j. pollard IS c.w. moss. yes, it's somewhat romanticized, probably the only thing that keeps me from giving it 5 stars. one of the films that started a revolution in american cinema, it was nominated for 10 oscars in a year that also produced the graduate, cool hand luke and in the heat of the night. wow

Pan's Labyrinth 2006,  R)

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 1962,  Unrated)
25
Miller's Crossing 1990,  R)
Miller's Crossing
a terrific and vastly underappreciated period noir from the coens. i love albert finney's genial mob boss and gabriel byrne playing all sides against the middle, marcia gay harden's tough as nails verna and john turturro as her squirrelly brother bernie. the entire cast is outstanding, great dialogue throughout and enough twists and turns to make this a near perfect film. also beautiful moody lighting by barry sonnenfeld!
26
The Grifters 1990,  R)
27
McCabe & Mrs. Miller 1971,  R)
28
The Big Lebowski 1998,  R)

31
Alien 1979,  R)
Alien
much love for blade runner but this is ridley scott's masterpiece. still scary as hell after nearly 30 years. i regret i never saw this in the theater. sigourney weaver is terrific in her first major role, well on the way to becoming the total badass she is in the sequel. her concern for the cat always gets me.
32
A Clockwork Orange 1971,  R)
A Clockwork Orange
real horror show!
33
North by Northwest 1959,  Unrated)
North by Northwest
hitchcock's most entertaining elaboration of the 'wrong man' theme. soo much fun. grant is perfectly bewildered throughout and mason makes a great bad guy. with eva marie saint as the very sassy blonde

very dark and profound medieval fairytale. one of the most beautiful films i've ever seen
52
The Horse's Mouth 1958,  Unrated)
The Horse's Mouth
gully jimson, mad artist, is my favorite alec guiness character. it's a shame so few people have seen or heard of this film. 4 for the film, 5 for guiness :)
53
Mulholland Drive 2001,  R)
Mulholland Drive
lynch tops himself. a reeeally bad day in l.a. stunning performances by the two leads. this film haunts me
54
Come and See (Idi i smotri) 1985,  Unrated)
Come and See (Idi i smotri)
the trouble begins with the children...this has to be one of the most brutal war films ever made. a young boy joins the resistance to fight the nazis and finds himself in a horrific nightmare. stunning images, soundtrack from hell; a brilliant piece of work, i think, but very tough to watch. in russian
55
Detour 1945,  Unrated)
56
Narayama bushiko (Ballad of Narayama) 1983,  Unrated)
Narayama bushiko (Ballad of Narayama)
the film recreates a remote mountain village in 19th century japan where famine is always lurking. it's a harsh world where infants are commonly discarded and at age 70, elders are carried to the mountaintop to die. the film follows one family in their various relationships and day to day struggles for survival. it's a raw and beautiful evocation of life bound by tradition at the most basic level
57
I Know Where I'm Going! 1945,  Unrated)
I Know Where I'm Going!
the most wonderful old fashioned romance i've seen in years!!!!! this isn't usually my thing but *surprise* i adored it :D gorgeous scenery, wry humor and such natural performances! i'm a big fan of hiller and livesey and while the story was predictable, the oddball characters and scottish flavor made it work. many thx to my friends who recommended this! this lovely film and a pint of ben & jerry's made my day :P
58
Los Olvidados (The Young and the Damned) 1950,  Unrated)
Los Olvidados (The Young and the Damned)
a searing indictment of poverty and document of the street life. pedro, ojitos and metche will break your heart. i won't soon forget this
59
Sunset Boulevard 1950,  Unrated)
60
Amadeus 1984,  PG)
61
Raise the Red Lantern (Da hong deng long gao gao gua) 1991,  PG)
62
Children of Men 2006,  R)
63
In a Lonely Place 1950,  Unrated)
In a Lonely Place
a very dark view of hollywood and the finest work of ray, bogart & gloria grahame. remarkable chemistry and self reflexive honesty rarely seen in tinseltown make it worthwhile viewing long after the central mystery is resolved. i don't want to spoil it for anyone but quite another ending was scripted, filmed and then scrapped by the director, who had the actors improvise the perfect-seeming ending we see today. serendipity
64
The Big Sleep 1946,  PG)
The Big Sleep
i never knew there were two versions of this film. apparently it was shelved for a couple years as the studio had a backlog of war films to get out. the film was then recut with added scenes to amp up the bogie-bacall relationship, creating a possibly better film that never quite makes sense but it doesn't seem to matter. grade A noir with a script by william faulkner
65
The King of Comedy 1983,  PG)
The King of Comedy
this may be de niro's greatest performance; funny, creepy and criminally underrated. it's also the only jerry lewis film i can stand. it's like a black comedy version of taxi driver. it may not be bloody but it's nearly as tough to watch
66
The Night of the Hunter 1955,  PG)
The Night of the Hunter
haunting southern gothic masterpiece
67
The Philadelphia Story 1940,  Unrated)
The Philadelphia Story

Strangers on a Train 1951,  PG)
69
Taxi Driver 1976,  R)
70
It's a Wonderful Life 1946,  G)
71
The Seventh Victim 1943,  Unrated)
The Seventh Victim
a brilliant dark mystery from producer val lewton, this was director mark robson's first film. it's a rather obvious inspiration for rosemary's baby with a shower scene that looks awfully familiar as well. with a nihilistic tone and a shocking final scene, it's a wonder this film ever got made in hollywood. one of the great unseen thrillers from the golden age, starring beaver cleaver's dad and zora from planet of the apes!
72
Humanity and Paper Balloons (Ninjo kami fusen) 1937,  Unrated)
73
Ruggles of Red Gap 1935,  Unrated)
Ruggles of Red Gap
it makes me happy that there are still hidden gems of cinema to be turned up and i probably won't live long enough to find them all. until a few months ago i'd never even heard of this movie and i'm a laughton fan! it's an absolutely delightful comedy western about a proper english gentleman's gentleman whose master loses him in a poker game--to some nouveau-riche americans. soon ruggles is on his way to the wild west where the concept of a manservant is not quite obvious to everyone. at first aghast, ruggles soon adapts to life in a society where everyone is 'equal'. a great 'fish out of water' comedy and subversive commentary on american vs european values with a wonderful, nearly silent performance by laughton, who does most of his acting with facial expressions alone! let's hope this gets a dvd release soon; it certainly deserves one
74
The Wicker Man 1974,  R)
75
Repo Man 1984,  R)
Repo Man
a sequel is in the works? what the fuckin fuck?

Stella - Nice collection of favorites... I stumbled onto The Lion in Winter on AMC about a year ago and was blown away by it. Great movie! I ran across another film just last night starring your most and least favorites...The Shootist. :)
