My Favorite Movies

  RubenBooth's Rating My Rating
1
Blue Velvet 1986,  R)
Blue Velvet
One of the greatest films ever made.
2
Videodrome 1983,  R)
Videodrome
Cronenberg's masterpiece.
3
Tetsuo: The Ironman 1989,  Unrated)
Tetsuo: The Ironman
Knocked me for six when I first saw it. One of the most perfect low budget films ever made.
4
Terror Firmer 1999,  R)
Terror Firmer
The greatest gross-out comedy ever and a great take on low-budget filmmaking.
5
Annie Hall 1977,  PG)
Annie Hall
Although my most precious Allen film is "Play It Again, Sam", "Annie Hall" is a near flawless comedy. Unlike a lot of his recent (ie the last 20 years) output, everything works here.

Lat sau san taam (Hard-Boiled) 1992,  R)
Lat sau san taam (Hard-Boiled)
Action films just don't get better than this. Yes, a lot of it is eye candy but you'll never get more bangs for your bucks than with this fantastic trip of a flick. God knows what happened to John Woo when he hit Hollywood (and sadly Chow Yun-Fat hasn't fared all that well either).
7
Funny Games 1998,  Unrated)
Funny Games
This is the sort of film you should first see without knowing anything about so I'm not going to comment on it other than to say it got inside my head and screwed with it big style.

It's a Wonderful Life 1946,  G)
It's a Wonderful Life
Once a year at Xmas ... Yes, angels get their wings but humans also suffer and worry and try to kill themselves and sometimes there are people who will reach out to them and touch them in a way that makes it possible to live a little bit longer.
9
Bad Boy Bubby 1993,  Unrated)
Bad Boy Bubby
Once you get used to the fact that Bubby is a bit gone in the head and shagging your Mum and wrapping your cat in cling film is normal, this movie is a hoot. Honest.
10
Oldboy 2004,  R)

C'est arrivé près de chez vous (Man Bites Dog) (It Happened in Your Neighborhood) 1991,  NC-17)
C'est arrivé près de chez vous (Man Bites Dog) (It Happened in Your Neighborhood)
RIP Remy Belvaux.

Grim and disturbing, but infused with a wonderful black humour and a strong satirical bent.
12
Chuck & Buck 2000,  R)
Chuck & Buck
I just relate to this film is all. I think Mike White is a genius and he's yet to better this effort.
