The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The best of all versions, in my opinion. Amazing performance by Charles Laughton.
4
Suspicion 1941,  Unrated)
5
Tokyo Story (Tôkyô monogatari) 1953,  Unrated)
Tokyo Story (Tôkyô monogatari)
Shot with precision and simplicity, Tokyo Story touches very deeply without appealing to great conflicts. Silence is a constant, as well as hidden feelings that the spectator can sense but not necessarily identify.
6
Sansho the Bailiff 1954,  Unrated)
7
Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai) 1954,  Unrated)
8
La Dolce Vita 1960,  Unrated)
9
La Notte 1961,  Unrated)
La Notte
A masterpiece carried on by Antonioni, with the most valuable assistance of his cinematographer, who delivers mind blowing photography. "La Notte" explores the boredom and shallowness of bourgeoisie like no other -- it surpasses even Fellini's "La Dolce Vita", once it goes deeper into the character's feelings and values. Marcello plays both. And what great actor he is.

My Life to Live (It's My Life) (Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux)
My fav. Godard movie. Anna Karina is amazing here, and Godard experiences with movie making really work in Vivre sa vie.
15
Le Procès (The Trial) 1963,  Unrated)
Le Procès (The Trial)
What a masterpiece, in every way - Perkins' acting, Orson' directing and vision, camera angles, light, scenery. It manages to preserve Kafka's work and still prints Orson's personal touch.
16
The Silence 1963,  Unrated)
The Silence
Very intense and claustrophobic movie by Bergman, with great acting performances. A disturbing history. A movie that should be considered at the same level as Persona, imo.
17
Persona 1966,  Unrated)
18
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo.) 1966,  R)
19
Samurai Rebellion 1967,  Unrated)
Samurai Rebellion
Samurai Rebellion is one of the greatest achievements in the genre. Kobayashi, more than Kurosawa, makes me think of Sergio Leone in the world of the Samurai, despite the remake of Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" by the Italian director. Kobayashi fills his film with intense human depth. Honor, morality and love move Samurai Rebellion and its conflits and make it a must-see for anyone who loves cinema - specially Oriental cinema fans.
