A Matter of Life and Death (Stairway to Heaven) 1946, PG)
Often classed as a war film, this is more of a romantic film which just happens to take place during the 2nd world war. Not only is it a well told and well acted story, the cinematography is beautiful, and far ahead of its time. The idea of making heaven black and while, while earth is in vibrant colour is unusual, but works so well with the story |

The Women 1939, Unrated)
I want to resist lamenting that Hollywood doesn't make this kind of film anymore, because they are remaking this - though asuredly nothing could top the original. It's so snarky, and so sublimely bitchey. Each actress gives her all, and if the "baddies" like Russell and Crawford come off more likable than the heroine, Shearer, then so much the better |
