Dune 1984, PG-13)
I was introduced to this film back in my college days (1987/1988) and instantly thought it was great. 5 stars for a movie of this age you say? I say yes, its still as good today as it was when it was first released. Definitely worthy of more than one viewing. There is so much to this film. I loved the story and the characters, the Baron Vladimir Harkonen being my favorite (he has all the best lines without question). A cast of great (I can't use that word enough as far as this movie is concerned) actors and actresses play their parts very well indeed. My particular favorite line from the film is "The Duke will die before these eyes..." and my friends have heard me quote it at the pub on several occasions after supping an alcoholic beverage or two. A typical good guys vs bad guys story but it is about so much more than that. I don't feel that a review can adequetly do this film justice. My friend has brought my attention to the book, Dune and I have to say that on this rare occasion the film does not do it any harm. On an anorak note, H.R. Geiger did the art work for the film (an artist whom I particularly like) and I have to say that his contribution really does credit to the movie. Please watch this film, I just hope you love it as much as I do. |

Commando 1985, R)
Those who slate this movie don't appreciate it for what it is. A great mix of action and unintentional humour. Probably Arnie's best movie in my opinion. The one liners are excellent as are the bullet proof roses, paper barracks and hollywood guns that Arnie carries around. This film also features a self repairing Porsche. This is one of those films that transends badness and goes back to goodness. Don't take this film seriously and enjoy the lashings of cheese and ham. |

Army of Darkness 1993, R)
A great mix of horror and comedy. Lots of quality one liners. Bruce Campbell is his usual brilliant self. It is one of those films that you can watch again and again and still enjoy. Ash is my idea of what a proper hero should be. A good film to watch with or without beer. I cannot think of anything bad to say about this movie. |

DOA: Dead or Alive 2007, PG-13)
Having seen the trailers big this movie up for sometime a doubting part of me worried that this film would not live up to expectations. How wrong could I have been! Slay me now but I thoroughly enjoyed this film and sad as it me seem its the best hour and a halfs entertainment I have had for some time. Don't get me wrong there are those out there that will maul this movie, I am not ever going to be one of those people. I deliberated over whether or not I could give this film 5 stars and the cheesy grin I had coming out from watch this said yeah Richie go for it! Prepare for lots and lots of silliness as it doesn't stop from start to finish. I am sure there are huge glaring holes peppered all over D.O.A. but do you know what I don't care. Short of Hollywood giving me a vast sum of money to make my movie and release it at the cinema within the next 3 months then this is without question my movie of the year! Oh and like I said before anyone who wants to slag this film off do so because I know in my heart of hearts that your quibbles are superficial and petty. By the way the film does explore romantic relationships (all be it in a none to subtle way) so its a great action film with a wedge of the feel good factor tapped on. Forgive me for this Mark but I am going to have to steal your line and say that this is the Gorgonzola of cheeses;-]. I now await the barage of critisism that awaits me! |

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope 1977, PG)
The year is 1977, I am off to the Gaumont Cinema to watch Star Wars. Put the clock on 29 years and this film is still as great as it was when I was a little kid. A timeless classic without a doubt. Way ahead of its time. A story of good vs evil. I can't see how any critic can find fault with this film, its perfect. Is there anything wrong with it? I think not! It has it all, action, romance, drama you name it. Whilst you may say that the film shows its age I can't see what it does wrong. In another 30 years I still expect this to be one of those films that will still stand the test of time and be one to watch again and again. |

Evil Dead 2 1987, R)
Bruce makes a welcome return in what is one of his best films. Playing Ash (our hero?) he is not the brightest of characters. However what he lacks in intelligence he seems to make up with cunning (maybe we should credit him with some intellegence, after all he did bring his girlfriend to a place where the only thing you can do to pass the time is shag silly). Truely a wonderous gorefest it rattles along at a right old pace. Bruce's performance though out the film can only be described as brilliant. Thankfully evil has a tendency to draw the stupid to it and Ash is joined by sidekicks that are not blessed with any great interlect. Our hero seems thrworted from start to finish in his pursuit of the one thing he truely wants (yes I am talking self preservation!). Sadly only Ash has the common sense to engage what is one of humanities most precious of traits (namely COWARDISS!). Its still as enjoyable today as it was back in the day (me and my cousin had the pleasure of watching it when it first came out). The comedy is supplied in large slabs and topped off with slices of ham. All in all, I can say that this movie is seriously GROOVY! "Swollow ya soul, swollow ya soul; Swollow this!" :0). |
