My Favorite Movies

  raybates's Rating My Rating
1
Psycho 1960,  R)
Psycho
The greatest horror movie ever to me. The score, acting, characters, story, set... flawless. One of Hitchcocks best easily and probably my favourite movie of all time.

I have seen this movie around 50 times or more and never ever get sick of it. The love I have for this movie is scary, it's just too good. Hitchcock is the greatest director that ever lived.

Anthony Perkins is the perfect cast as Norman Bates. His good innocent looks are convincing enough through out the movie to keep you wondering what the truth is. I believe it's the greatest horror performance ever and one of the most interesting villain characters in cinema history. No one could have done it like Perkins did.

This is the movie that got me into black & white and Hitchcock and it has a special place in my heart forever. It has one of if not the most well known scene in cinema history (shower scene) and one of the best sets in the Bates Motel and the creepy house.
2
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo.) 1966,  R)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo.)
John Ford is without a doubt the Western genre God but no one did them as cool as Leone.

Eli Wallach give a classic comical performance and is one of the main reasons why this movie is so great.

The score is well known and deservedly so. It has become a trademark to anyone that thinks of a western movie.

The scene where we go through the Civil War followed by the grave dance and final show down is one of the greatest half hour or so moments in cinema history, pure gold.
3
The Manchurian Candidate 1962,  PG-13)
The Manchurian Candidate
Without a doubt one of the best drama/spy conspiracy theory type movie I have ever seen. The performance of everyone involved was simply outstanding and some parts very haunting.

The fact that the movie came out in 1962 is also one big irony. A decade where many assassinated individuals were and still are treated as a conspiracy. Especially the RFK assassination where some people believe that Sirhan was a Manchurian Candidate victim that simply followed order than forgot what he had done. This movie is way ahead of its time and although it's not perfect it still stands out and will hit you hard.

The ending kept me on the edge of my seat and the build up is fantastic. The score is also perfect and so was the directing of the movie.

Extra credit to the brilliant performance of Angela Lansbury, one of the most haunting and psychological villains I have seen on the screen. Makes you want to keep a close eye on every first lady or, second lady? That is about to enter the white house.

Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West) 1968,  PG-13)
Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West)
Again, one of my all time favourites. Just like The Good, bad and the ugly everything about it was perfect. Perfect ending, characters, score, set... you name it.

I've seen a few argument regarding Henry Fonda and the character he plays. To me he was amazing and did the role justice, cold hearted you can see through his eyes.

The score is just fantastic, simple yet like most Sergio Leone scores very memorable. Charles Bronson is also as good as Henry Fonda and carries the movie very well.
5
Planet of the Apes 1968,  G)
Planet of the Apes
It has been a while since I watched the original so when I put it in my dvd player yesterday I was quite looking forward to it and it reminded me why I loved it so much in the first place. They don't make films this great anymore, the genre has been done to death but this is brilliant and original. With Rise of the planet of the apes coming out, I am sure i will be some what disappointed but it reminded me of how great the whole franchise and story has been.

Without a doubt, my favourite and one of the best sci-fi films that you will ever watch. It is a shame that this film does not get as much attention as the likes of other sci-fi films like Alien, Predator, Star Wars etc... but non of those other films are as bold and as unique as this film here.

The make up for its time was brilliant and although Charlton Heston is not a very likable person in real life, or so he seemed while he was alive, you can't say he did not have strong screen presence in most of his films. This movie in a way is ahead of its time in many ways. You can view it as a political or racial/society type of film or you can just enjoy it as a science fiction film with a great story.

The whole Planet Of The Apes franchise is one of my favourite because of how it develops and all the subliminal messages to how society is now and so on. It is a great set of films that have not been given the respect they deserve.

The Shawshank Redemption 1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
In 1994 a masterpiece went under the radar but now, as it deserves, it's among the greatest movies ever made.

Never have I watched a movie where at the end i felt so good about life. It's one of those movies that no matter how you feel, it can always lift your spirit up. You feel as if you're inside the shawshank prison going through the years with them.

There are a few great buddy movies, movies that make you appreciate people, friends, love, freedom and happiness but I've never come across a movie that combines it all in one like Shawshank Redemption does.

12 Angry Men (Twelve Angry Men) 1957,  Unrated)
12 Angry Men (Twelve Angry Men)
when i first heard about this movie, i thought no way in hell could they pull off a movie that long in one room with 12 guys talking. Trust me, i don't care if you get bored easy or don't like black and white movies.. this is a MUST. I was hooked on the first 10 minutes...

Henry Fonda isn't the only star here, each character give an interesting performance and each one have their own story and reasons for their choice. The final build up to the finale was executed exceptionally as well.

To me Hitchcock was the master of making a great movie in as little set used as possible, here Sidney Lumet does the exact same thing and creates an all time classic.
8
Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai) 1954,  Unrated)
Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai)
One of the greatest movies ever made. It stands as my second favourite. Akira Kurosawa creates poetry on film. Three hours of perfect character development that grip you from the start till the end.

Every movie fan knows the huge influence it had on many directors and movies. Epic action scenes and battles that still look as good today.

We get to learn about each character as they start to become one in the team. Each Samurai had something special to offer and the actors made sure to do so when they played them.

Citizen Kane might be the greatest American movie ever made but this one goes one better, to me it's the greatest movie ever made. They don't make them like this one anymore, a true gem.
9
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 1969,  PG)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
A great fast paced Western with great characters and acting. I was really impressed with how Robert did with the Sundance Kid character, in a way he reminded me a lot of Brad Pit and that includes his looks in this movie.

The directing is classic and very creative, one of the best opening scenes in fact to me that i've ever seen. The whole mixing with color and editing works out so well.

Paul Newman also does a great job, very cool and sharp as always. I enjoyed it so much that i was a bit upset when it ended.
10
The Godfather 1972,  R)
The Godfather
The greatest gangster movie ever. Al Pacino's best performance to date. The whole build up of him from being the innocent "don't want to be in this business" guy to what he becomes in part 2 is just the perfect transformation (Lucas should have took notes).

Brando comes back with a powerful performance that lives on to this day. Francis Ford Coppolas directing here was phenomenal and he brought out the best in all the actors. Caan, Duvall and especially Keaton were equally as good as their main stars.
11
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
Batman Begins raised the bar for all superhero movies that came out ever since. The Dark Knight re-raised the bar even higher when I did not think it was even possible after watching Batman Begins.

The Dark Knight had all the right ingredients. It had a fantastic cast, great characters and a first class script but most importantly it had a director who has great vision when it comes to making movies that stand out and that last in your memory for a very long time. He brought back a franchise that was pretty much left dead and buried by George Clooney and co.

There is no doubt that the most impressive performance was by the late Heath Ledger as the Joker. He became his role and showed many of his critics, especially ignorant ones who did not think someone like him who played a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain could play the Joker. It's hard to pick one best scene because whenever he was on screen I like many was mesmerized by his performance. The beginning of the film and introduction of the Joker is one of the best I have ever seen. To this day it sense shivers down my spine and goosebumps attacks. It is not only great to watch but well filmed and a great way to start a film. It sets the tone just perfectly right. The score compliments all those scenes and the movie in general so much as well. I believe the score sometimes makes the movie even greater and credit is due to those who made that soundtrack.

Aaron Eckhart was perfect as Two Face and I loved how they handled his story. My only problem in this whole film is if he actually dies at the end. I keep convincing myself that he was put in Arkham asylum and hopefully will be back in future Batman films otherwise that was a very short story for such a cool character. The effects were brilliant and not over the top like in the other movie or animated series, which works nicely with Nolans realistic approach to the film. Christian Bale does a good job again and despite many moaning about his Batman voice i would say that it is a minor inconvenience that really should not take away from his acting and how well he have brought Batman to the screen unlike many before him.

The movie is not just a great superhero film but also stands on it's own as a great thriller, action, drama film. In my opinion it is an Oscar worthy film like L.A confidential was back in 1997 when it comes to crime/thriller films. It stands out as a normal film about heroes and criminals and not just a comic superhero.

I have seen this film 5 times in the cinema Including a visit to the IMAX and a couple of times on DVD and now tv and to this day I can't take my eyes off till Batman disappears on his bike and credits start to roll down.

I highly doubt that Nolan could surpass this if he does a third but I certainly cant wait to see him try. Easily the best superhero film that's ever been made.

The only sad note I would add to this is that it hurts in a what if way, that Heath Ledger had to pass away and not reprise the role of the Joker in future projects because I and many others would have loved for him to have another crack. Maybe his twin brother from another mother Joseph Gordon-Levit could give us something similar if The Joker returns? I would love that. Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix are two others i think would do a great job.
12
L.A. Confidential 1997,  R)
L.A. Confidential
Easily one of the best movies made in my generation/life time. To me, top 5 or maybe even best movies from the 90's.

One of the best casts I've ever watched where everyone plays their character to perfection. A mix of characters and talented actors which in a way some reflect to their real persona ala Russell Crowe being a nut in real life.

Curtis Hanson portrays the whole Hollywood/L.A glamor so well that the movie almost feels like it's from that era, something i didn't feel with other movies that try so hard to portray an era or time. The set design and direction is also fantastic.

The story itself is great and you can hardly see any fault in it. We can't also forget the score which compliments the whole movie very well indeed.
13
Seven (Se7en) 1995,  R)
Seven (Se7en)
I am a sucker for psychological thrillers and this Fincher classic is still up there with one of the best movies of the decade from the 90's. What i love about this film is how it is not afraid of being so depressing and making the 'heroes' suffer through out the film until the right very end.

It kind of reminds of me boys don't cry when it comes to the crap city atmosphere of where they live. A place where things seem to be dull and crime is around the corner. David Fincher has directed a few classics by now but this is one of his first master pieces that really put his name on the map.

The cast is brilliant and without spoiling the surprise i'll say that he couldn't have picked a better person for that character. Very calmly chilling like Hannibal Lecture. This movie is 15 years old but still stands up there with anything that comes out today. We don't get that many great thriller classics now days so this is just a reminder to me of how great this film was. It is re-watch-able every time it is on TV.

King Kong 1933,  Unrated)
King Kong
You could only picture the look on peoples faces when they saw this classic in the cinemas in 1933. I guess stop motion effects have become something of the past now with all the CGI advanced technology but nothing beats a good ol original classic where so much effort and time was put on it. I love this movie, i can watch it many times and never get sick of it.
15
Straw Dogs 1971,  R)
Straw Dogs
Not an easy movie to watch or like but it's another personal favourite. To me i've always admired and thought highly of Dustin Hoffman and he does a great job here. Sam Peckinpah at his best.
16
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 1962,  Unrated)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
John Wayne, John Ford and the very versatile James Stewart combine to make a western classic.

I haven't seen many John Ford movies, although there are plenty i'm dying to see especially The Searchers. To get back to the point, i'm not sure if this is considered among his best ones but it isn't then i really need to watch his other movies pronto.
17
Rebecca 1940,  Unrated)
Rebecca
Alot of people regard Citizen Kane as the greatest American movie ever made. When i watched Rebecca I was shocked that this movie doesn't get any credit on the same level. The opening credits are one of the best and I've heard that orson welles was influenced by this movie. In fact he even played the main role in a theatre play before the movie was made so the rumours arent far fetched. One of the greatest movies of all time.
18
Back to the Future 1985,  PG)
Back to the Future
Probably the greatest and most fun family adventure film/trilogy that has ever been made. This is one of the few films that could be watched over hundreds of times and not be bored of. You can learn every line and know every scene but you can never not like it or not watch it again when it comes on tv.

I managed to watch it for the first time ever on the big screen and it is an amazing feeling. There is nothing better than watching classics on the big screen because you were too young or not born yet when they came out.

I have actually spotted a few things and gags that I did not before, which was quite cool. This film is ahead of its time and still is as entertaining as ever.
19
Le Procès (The Trial) 1963,  Unrated)
Le Procès (The Trial)
Films don't come better than this. Anthony Perkins is perfect for the role and Orson Welles behind the camera is perfection. Very underrated film noir.

The Man with the Golden Arm 1955,  Unrated)
The Man with the Golden Arm
I heard that this is was the first movie ever to tackle drug addiction. For a first timer and for the time it came out, i was really impressed. Most of all, I was so impressed by Frank Sinatra's performance that I found some scenes hard to watch. He was so believable as a drug addict and now i can say that he wasn't only one of the best musicians ever but the man can act. He was also impressive in The Manchurian Candidate, which is the only other movie i have seen him in.

I definitely want to check out more movies with Frank Sinatra because he really impressed me. The movie isn't flawless because it may drag in some parts although I personally had no problem with the timing at all.

Kim Novak was also very good, Eleanor Parker on the other hand will definitely annoy anyone but she did her part well. I thought the relationship between her and Sinatra and how Sinatra reacted at the end kind of say it all.

How did Sinatra not win an Oscar for this? I need to find out.

The Seven Year Itch 1955,  Unrated)
The Seven Year Itch
Review coming soon. Updating.
22
Midnight Cowboy 1969,  R)
Midnight Cowboy
One of the best from the 60's. Hoffman is amazing here and so is Jon Voight who plays a male prostitute. One of Hoffmans best performances.
23
Schindler's List 1993,  R)
Schindler's List
Steven Spirlbergs best movie. This was his greatest year and the guy was on another level above all. Ralph Fiennes gives one of the most chilling villain's performance ever.
24
Rear Window 1954,  PG)
Rear Window
Many peoples favourite Hitchcock movie. The concept is just genius and we all know James Stewart was one of the best actors that ever lived. Again, Hitchcock makes you feel as if you were sitting with the main character all through the movie, you feel involved and on the edge every second.
25
The Birds 1963,  PG-13)
The Birds
I can sit here all day and talk good about Hitchcock, the guy was a genius. To me this movie had one of the best endings right up there with Planet Of The Apes. Who would have thought a movie with birds as the badies would be so good? Like i said, only Hitchcock could do such things.
26
L' Appartement (The Apartment) 1996,  R)
L' Appartement (The Apartment)
One of the best/original foreign movies I've ever seen. It has Hitchcock written all over it and has a great performance from all involved. The story is gripping form the beginning to end and the score as well as directing is nearly flawless. One of the main movies that got me into foreign territory.
27
The Last Temptation of Christ 1988,  R)
The Last Temptation of Christ
forget the Da Vinci Code, this is a great movie. Very interesting and different. Great acting and casting. One of Scorsese's underrated gems.
28
The Graduate 1967,  PG)
The Graduate
Great comedy from the 60's. Dustin Hoffman is not highly rated as Al Pacino and Robert De Niro but to me he is a better actor, if not then at least on the same level and deserves to be among the best actors that ever did it. He is very versatile and shows that he can do a comic act very well here at an early stage of his career. I remember there was a parody of the ending in one of the simpson episodes... it was great seeing it in live action. Great soundtrack.

Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies) 1988,  Unrated)
Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies)
This is still my favourite anime of all time. I don't think i have felt so emotionally involved and saddened like i did with this movie. Not even a real life movie has made me feel like this piece of work has.

If i had to choose one anime in the world to show someone it has to be this one, just for the fact that animes are not just cartoons for kids but could also be something for everyone and emotionally involving.

You really get involved in to the story and the characters and you feel for them. Not many people could achieve that in an anime and this is why the man is a legend for the work that he has done.
30
Snake in the Eagle's Shadow (Se ying diu sau) (Eagle's Shadow) 1978,  PG)
Snake in the Eagle's Shadow (Se ying diu sau) (Eagle's Shadow)
personal classic. Jackie Chan is hilarious.
31
Rope 1948,  PG)
Rope
Many regarded it as a failed experiment. I can't see how... Hitchcock gives us another memorable movie carried heavily by long shots and interesting characters. The story is simple but keeps you on the edge of your site through out the movie. I felt as if i was part of the guests and thats what I love about this movie.
32
Little Big Man 1970,  PG)
Little Big Man
I think i agree with another flixster member on here who said this is one of the most underrated Westerns ever. On the same line as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly the story has different Genres combined in one but with a more heart whelming ending and message through out the movie.

Hoffman has always been one of my favorite actors and i would put him above such actors as De Niro and Al Pacino who many seem to think of first when greatest actor comes up.

It's like watching Shawshank Redemption but a western version. Maybe not the best example but in some ways it lifts your spirit up even though it can be a bit depressing, violent and heartbreaking at times.

The way the story flows and the way the movie was done works so well and you don't feel it as the 2 hours or so fly by. This is definitely of the best movies I have seen and I recommend it highly to anyone.
33
Drive 2011,  R)
Drive
Without a doubt one of if not my favorite film of the year. Ryan Gosling reminds me of Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver. A very interesting character and I was really Into the whole film from start to finish with excitement, worry and anticipation for his character and what he was going through.

Everything about the film was fantastically made. The music was amazing and the way the movie started, the fact that the main character does not say much adds to the mystery of him. It was filmed very stylish and compliments the great score. Some scenes might seem graphic or more like sound, they give you a hint of the violence but never too much to make you sick.

All in all a great achievement from Nicolas Winding Refn and a must see.
34
Strangers on a Train 1951,  PG)
Strangers on a Train
The master of suspense does it once again. There is no one in my opinion in cinema history as influential as Hitchcock was. This is one of the most interesting thriller movies I've ever seen.
35
3:10 to Yuma 2007,  R)
3:10 to Yuma
This was a great experience at the cinema. I went to a preview screening as I just couldn't wait any longer and glad i made the effort. The movie has had good and bad reviews, mainly because of its ending. I can see why some would think otherwise also... i saw it in a different way than the whole being baffled by the characters actions.

I think that bales character decided to do what he did to prove a point to his son, who seemed to admire the outlaw and in a way louring towards that way, something his dad would not want. Bales character suffered a lot and you can tell he just got sick of being pushed over and to me the whole story is believable.

Crowe's character was brilliant because he keeps you guessing, he was like an anti hero, you love to hate to love him kind of way. I think what he does at the end makes him an even more likable character but at the same time you like him for being bad and so calm about it all.

All in all i'm well pleased and think it was worth all the wait i had to do. My favourite of the year so far. Roll on Jesse James.
36
Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime) 1999,  PG-13)
Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime)
Classic Anime, one of my favourites also right after Grave Of The Fireflys
37
For a Few Dollars More (Per Qualche Dollaro in Più) 1965,  R)
For a Few Dollars More (Per Qualche Dollaro in Più)
My second favourite in the series but almost as good as The Good, bad and the ugly.
38
The 39 Steps 1935,  PG)
The 39 Steps
Regarded as his best movie from the British era, before he moved to the states and work in Hollywood. This is a fantastic romantic thriller. Typical story but he can tell us the same story a million times yet still make it as interesting as the other.
39
Drunken Master (Jui kuen) 1978,  PG-13)
Drunken Master (Jui kuen)
I saw this movie once again this weekend and still love it. It's hard to rate movie like this specially when you are not a pro reviewer like myself. All i could say about this is that Jackie Chan on his better days. I love this one, not as good as Snake In The Eagles Shadow but nearly there.
40
Harvey 1950,  Unrated)
Harvey
Not many actors can make you believe that a 6 foot rabbit exists or is in the picture when he isn't. Of course not many are James Stewart.

After a long time of wanting to watch this so called Stewart classic, i finally got my hands on the dvd during the New Years sales. Knowing me, I always leave movies to pile and in a moment of madness I watch 10 in a week than same old story. This however i couldn't wait for no longer and finally decided to unlazy myself and watch it.

I haven't seen that many movies that leave me feeling good after, only one that comes up is Shawshank Redemption and that movie we all know is a masterpiece. This movie gave me that same exact feeling. It is a great comedy/fantasy that is perfectly acted by James Stewart. All the characters contribute to the movies success of being so good but the show here is for the legend himself.

Do yourself a favor and watch this movie.

A Fistful of Dollars (Per un Pugno di Dollari) 1964,  R)
A Fistful of Dollars (Per un Pugno di Dollari)

43
The Matrix 1999,  R)
The Matrix
Need I say anything about this? One of the greatest movies ever made. It set a new era of action and style/way of filming them. The story is priceless and Keanu Reeves as Neo was perfect. One of my all time favourites.
44
Alien 1979,  R)
Alien
My second favourite sci:fi movie after Planet of The Apes. Way better than the sequels and a test of nerves. Probably the only movie I can tolerate where the hero is a women and doesn't need to be half naked.. oh wait, she was.. but you get my point.
45
The Searchers 1956,  Unrated)
The Searchers
I've been wanting to see this movie for a very long time. I only got into Westerns not so long ago and started with Sergio Leones Spaghetti Trilogy, Other than this, the only other John Ford movie I've seen was "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". It's this movie though however that i've been meaning to see for so long and after much long awaited time, i have.

I'm not sure how to review this movie because i feel as if i was slightly disappointed but it might have been the hype more than the movie having much fault. This movie does have great shots but nothing as special to me as I've read. The story is fantastic and the acting was good but also, nothing as far as "greatest western" goes and I've only seen a few. I believe this movie was a victim of it's hype like many others but had i not read so many reviews and so many recommendations etc... I believe I'd have enjoyed and liked it very much still. I'm a big fan of old movies but I do believe a remake of this with the right director and actors on board would make an interesting remake.

I have not read the Novel so therefor i'm not sure how much was cut out or not put into the movie but I felt as if something was missing so therefor I can't give it a 5 star rating.

47
Cidade de Deus (City of God) 2002,  R)
Cidade de Deus (City of God)
Not as great as when I first saw it. It kind of loses it's coolness and shock factor. Still a very enjoyable film with an interesting story which is based on a true one I believe.
48
Donnie Darko 2001,  R)
Donnie Darko
I love this movie. To me it's a classic and one of the best modern movies. Jake does a fantastic job, actually everyone does.
49
Apocalypse Now 1979,  R)
Apocalypse Now
There is a reason why this film is always in the top list of best movies ever made. It's total madness but the funniest thing is that all the characters are quite mad except for the guy they actually think is mad. This is why the movie is so brilliant in my opinion. Done in the background of the Vietnamese war (unlike the book) it works perfectly and a super performance from Martin Sheen.

After reading some of the crap Brando did to make life hard for everyone, I lost a bit of respect for his performance but you have to give him credit where it's due and he did a superb job for such a small but important role.

The Thin Red Line 1998,  R)
The Thin Red Line
A war movie couldn't have been any more beautiful.

Citizen Kane
One of the most influential movies ever, everyone knows that. Great story, sill can't get over some of the camera shots.

Open Range
Great western. A great way to bring the genre back from the dead.
53
The Count of Monte Cristo 2002,  PG-13)
The Count of Monte Cristo
Fantastic movie, great story and acting. Really fun to watch.
54
American Beauty 1999,  R)
American Beauty
It has been a few years since I watch American Beauty, unfortunately it definitely is not as great as I first felt about it. I believe the biggest let down in the film is the story of the daughter and the colonels son. It is annoying, too arty or depressing for my liking and just doesn't make sense. It let's the movie down a bit and the fill doesn't feel as powerful as it did when I watched it last. I still think Kevin Spacey was brilliant but he pretty much carries the film on his back. Quite liked to have known more about Colonel Fitts story though and why he is the way he acted in the film.
55
Die Hard 1988,  R)
Die Hard
Easily top 5 greatest action movies ever.
56
Signs 2002,  PG-13)
Signs
I have seen this movie at least 4 times now and still think it's brilliant. A lot of people seem to misunderstand M. Night Shyamalan movies, which is frustrating sometimes. This movie wasn't an Alien movie but more about faith and coincidence that lead to the fate of some things in life. The ending was about that and not the whole water issue that many seem to get 'pissed' off about.

Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix are a thrill to watch and M. Night Shyamalan directing once again is brilliant. Pace, score, cinematography all were fantastic.
57
The Machinist 2003,  R)
The Machinist
Let us get the obvious out of the way, the movie is great mostly because one hell of a powerhouse performance from Christian Bale.

The plot, story, twist whatever you want to call it is a bit predictable and an over used formula BUT not many have done what Bale did for this roll. I believe that movies aren't just about giving a good performance or the story but it's also about the dedication actors and actresses put into their roll. For example Frida. I love passion and Bale here shows why he is probably one of the best actors if not the best actor of our new generation.

This is a must see, Bale deserves all the recognition for this movie because it's not every day where someone loses 60 stones for a small movie.

Many say this has a Hitchcockian feel to it and i can't agree more. The score is brilliant and reminds you so much of Hitchcocks Psycho. Matter of fact Bales performance in some ways is very similar to Anthony Perkins Norman Bates.
58

Underrated gangster movie gem. I actually prefer this over Goodfellas. Pacino is fantastic and Depp does a brilliant job. Great chemestry.

Ed Wood 1994,  R)
Ed Wood
Tim Burtons best movie to date. One of the best Biopic I've ever seen. Edward D Wood Jr. was a very interesting man and Burton makes sure we know that here. Johny Depp is brilliant as Ed Wood himself and who can forget the memorable performance by Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi? Shot in black and white, which makes it even better.

I've met more people that love the second movie more than the first, i'm not one of them. This is as good in terms of story and acting as well as everything we loved in the first but i've always enjoyed the first one more. De Niro and Pacino do a fantastic job.

One of the greatest soundtracks and character based movies. This is a very influential movie from the 90's that was robbed at the Oscars because Hollywood wasn't ready yet. Probably Tarantinos best as well.

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
in 1977, George Lucas didn't have a clue what his movie was going to create 30 years or so later. Now he is swimming with money and probably the happiest man when he sleeps. We can sit here all day and debate but there is no way the prequels are anywhere near as good as the originals. This is the second best of the series, can argue with it being first too.

Kramer vs. Kramer 1979,  PG)
Kramer vs. Kramer
A very sad movie that tells a story about divorce and the devastating effect it has on kids. Hoffman and Streep do a great job in this very heartbreaking movie. It's really emotional and just makes you wonder about what kind of effects parents could have on the kid(s) when things get nasty.

Downfall (Der Untergang) 2004,  R)
Downfall (Der Untergang)
This movie is absolutely fascinating and interesting. Bruno Ganz surely does a scary impression of the Fuhrer Adolf Hitler. I loved this movie because it doesn't fall for making the bad guy pure evil yet not making us feel any sympathy for him either. The fact that most of it is facts from his secretary that was there is what makes this movie so haunting and fascinating.

What would you do if you were about to be captured and executed? After all you have done and believed in to find out you have been betrayed, even by your own thoughts and visions. Hitler might have been an evil man but he'll always be a historical figure that many will want to know about and why he did the those evil things.

All the cast were fantastic and the mood, atmosphere as well as editing makes this movie great.

The Pianist
Amazing. One of Polanski's best. Adrien Brody does a fantastic job, he is a brilliant actor and this was the perfect role.

No one thought he would take the Oscar home because he was a bit of an unkown compared to the known heavy hitters that year. Adrien Brody does the character justice and Roman Planski ditto with the directing. Touching story from someone who was there when things like that happened. This must have been a tough journey for the director.

The Silence of the Lambs 1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
Like Anthony Perkins in Psycho, Anthony Hopkins plays a role that will stick in memory for a very very long time. He basically is the Norman Bates of the new generation. So if Norman Bates is still brought up then Hannibal will be as well for the next few years maybe even next century.

The movie isn't only great because of him though. It is one of the best psychological thrillers that you will ever see. Jodie Foster is also fantastic as the young detective working on the case with help from Hannibal himself.

The movie doesn't use a lot of shock but when there is gruesome scenes, it really plays with your mind. Hannibal himself as a character and the way he interacts with others is haunting.

The movie is the type that could be watched numerous times and never get bored of. This is easily in the top 10 best movies of the 90's.

I have not seen many of Orson Welles's films and very curious to why so many think he is one of the greatest at it. In this film he plays a a former Nazi war criminal who lives in America as a teacher until one day something goes totally wrong and he gets found.

It's a very well acted and directed film, the Edward G. Robinson character is played well as a the Nazi hunter who annoyingly asks too many questions with no one suspecting that he is possibly a detective until he comes clean. Overall, a great thriller of a film.

The Village 2004,  PG-13)
The Village
This is a case of a film being misunderstood or mis-advertised. The trailer shows us what many thought would be a horror film. This was at a time when M. Night Shyamalan was still up and coming and on everyone's hot list.

The film goes at a slow pace and like most of his films, it will be judges on the 'twist' although I did not really think it is fair to judge a whole film on a twist. There are so many films out there, some very popular where it is judged on the twist more than the journey of the film. The Village is pretty much judged on many things but the twist if you want to call it that is not the whole point of the film. There is a message yes and it was at a time when terrorism and war took over the headlines. I think the director worked with today's problems in society and put an idea together which works very nicely.

I don't know how original this idea is but I enjoyed it and found it very interesting, he threw in an element of horror to keep the cinema goers happy and probably to sell his film better. It backfired for him but It is nice to see that there are good movie fans who have good taste that actually appreciate this and understand where the director is coming from with the idea and how he achieved it. The film is very moody, foggy, eerie and that to me is all the elements you need to create fear and a eerie atmosphere.

Good characters and casting, definitely one of M. Night Shyamalan last good films before he lost the plot.

Kalifornia 1993,  R)
Kalifornia
It's been a while since i last watched this movie. I decided to throw this in last night and give it another watch after 7 years or so and I'm seriously impressed.

The movie is based on a guy who is interested in serial killers and the reasons to why they do what they do. He goes around researching with his girlfriend who is a photographer and helps him with his work.

They decide to move to California after his lady gets frustrated with lack of success in her work and he agrees to it as long as they can go with someone and share expenses.

Jumping a bit forward, they take a couple with them who seem a bit troubled and just want to get away. For some reason the man is under parole and can't leave the state. We never really find out why exactly because different stories were told from characters but that doesn't matter because soon we find out just an idea of why that might be.

Brad Pitt truly portrays one of the scariest psychotic characters I've ever seen. His role is so convincing that sometimes I worried for people around him as if i knew them or as if i was there. His physical movement and accent were perfect and he hit the nail right on the head here. Obviously he stole the show but we can't take away nothing for Juliette Lewis who was amazing herself. All in all the acting was brilliant from all parties.

A must see Thriller.

Elephant 2003,  R)
Elephant
A very good movie about the shooting incident that happened at the Columbine High School around April 1999. I'm not a fan of Gus Van Sant, specially after his really pointless remake of my favorite movie Psycho. However, here he uses the Hitchcock influence in a much better and more interesting way than easily remaking a whole movie to show his love for Hitchcocks work.

The long shots in the movie and the way we are introduced to each character works really well. You feel cold in that school, something about the way it was filmed and the long shots that really make you feel as if you were there all that time and that it just wasn't going to be a good day. Hitchcock used his fist long shots in Rope, where many said the experiment failed and the movie didn't work. However I have to disagree and say that if Van had not used a similar technique then this movie wouldn't have worked either, just like Rope which I thought was brilliant and works great with the long shots.

If you are curious like me about the Columbine shooting, then this is a very good movie and I recommend highly. There are some things though that I wasn't sure why Van added, like the kiss in the shower but that doesn't spoil the movie too much... just a bit pointless and didn't really make any sense to me personally.

28 Days Later
One of the best horror movies I've seen in recent years. I watched the sequel before this and i can see elements now between the two movies but overall this is definitely the winner. The way the movie lays out, the whole plot and character developing works so well.

The iconic shot of an empty London sends shiver down my spine, specially being someone who visits those areas regularly and seeing so many people there. The whole atmosphere and the way the movie was filmed makes this the great horror movie it is.

Superman II 1981,  PG)
Superman II
I must re-review this one. After watching the Donner cut, I think this movie deserves a half star cut off. I know it's not nice, yes yes but come on I think It's hard to forget the scene with the plastic S bag.

Maybe not the best reason to knock a half star off but when you watch how the movie was intended and then see this version where Lois forgets about Clark's identity in a very weird un-explained way, You'd do the same.

Toy Story 1995,  G)
Toy Story
Toy Story changed animation cartoons forever. It kick started what has been 15 years of success for Pixar. The team behind this have worked real hard and they can only be proud of what they achieved with Toy Story.

The story is great and the groundbreaking animation might look a bit out of date compared to how amazing the new Toy Story 3 is but let's not forget the impact at the time it came out in the mid 90's.

It's such a simple idea but done so effectively and it could be enjoyed by all ages. It has comedy, adventure and drama like no other animated film before it. This film probably started the slow death of 2D Disney films but let's be honest, pixar have not disappointed for the last 15 years so 2D has not been missed much.

Dirty Harry 1971,  R)
Dirty Harry
Before John McClane there was Callahan, the meanest toughest S.O.B in town. There are three cops that I've always liked and will always be my favorites and they are in three great cop/action movies:

The French Connection
Dirty Harry
Die Hard

Now, this movie is definitely original and you can see some of its influence on the Die Hard series. Or maybe it's just me? Like for example the whole calling a pay phone and Eastwood having to be there on time. That also happened in Die Hard 3 where Bruce Willis had to do the exact same thing.

Also, not sure how many movies had stories/plots regarding a sniper randomly killing people like that and that includes the whole race issue.

I don't see this as a perfect movie or a movie that deserves to be in the greatest movie list but it's definitely a great movie with another good performance from the legend.
97
Cloverfield 2008,  PG-13)
Cloverfield
When i first watched this movie, i felt a bit disappointed but that is the case to nearly everything in life that is hyped too much. This is something i fear will happen when i travel to Egypt next month as well, i will probably look at the pyramids and think to myself "is this it?".

Anyways my point of the story is that I wasn't very sure of the 'monster' and i left the theater with a bit of something missing. However, when I got home and started to think more about what I just watched I became really obsessed with the idea and wanted to view it again in the cinema just to make up my mind.

I can say now that I definitely feel slightly different about the whole movie. I thought it was great to start with but now I appreciate it more and think it's a very special and unique movie. It's something that I would have been very proud of if I created. I always think of scenarios, whether i am on the bus, train, plane, in bed trying to sleep. Imagination is a beautiful thing and Cloverfield in a way crosses that field.

The style it was filmed is genius, simple but is brilliant and is why the movie is so great. While i was watching the trailers before the movie, i realized there are already a few movies coming out with hand-held effects. I'm not saying they are copying Cloverfield but you can tell how everyone wants to experiment with that sort of directing now. I don't think many will succeed like this movie did in what it represents.

The whole media and rumors that were going around before the movie was released make it even better now. I can't really praise the movie any more than what I have already. Just go watch it and be open minded as this is a movie you must see in the theater if anything at least for the great sounds used.

Ps. Watch your right hand screen at the end, you wont want to miss this.

Predator 1987,  R)
Predator
Maybe this isn't the classic anyone would expect but to me it's always going to have a special place in my heart. The whole survival of the fittest theme and atmosphere of the jungle worked great. There is no denying that Arnold might have been a one dimensional actor but he was so good at what he did and he makes this movie.

The Big Lebowski 1998,  R)

My Blueberry Nights 2007,  PG-13)
My Blueberry Nights
I randomly decided to watch this movie today. It was either this or Be kind Rewind but after seeing the trailer 2 nights ago it looked really interesting.

The movie is a hit or miss, you will either really like it or feel like you wasted time watching it. In a way there is no conclusion or closure in the movie and sometimes it feels like there wasn't too much depth but I really liked this.

I thought the feel of the movie was great, kind of what I always imagined New York really to be like. All movies do is show NY as bigger than life but here it gives you that kind of city feel to it that not many movies do. The movie is very jazzy and probably the slow motion shots and music helps. I wasn't sure about the slow motion effect as it got a bit tiring at the end and it was too arty at some parts for its own good. However this was a really good movie with some brilliant performances and little cameos. I was mostly impressed by Jude Law and loved his character, shame he wasn't on screen for too long.

There were some powerful scenes that leave you with a note in your throat, specially the Rachel Weisz speech about her 'husband'.

Norah Jones was very impressive also, she has a nice presence on the screen and is a very pretty lady.

Like i said, if you like your art house movies then this is quite good but if you prefer your fast paced movies then you wont enjoy it too much.

Ps. The soundtrack is brilliant, make sure you get it.

The Iron Giant 1999,  PG)
The Iron Giant
Fantastic animation. Now i understand why so many say it's underrated. It has heart, laughter and everything you could ask for. A tear jerker as well.

The only thing I had a problem with is that we never find out where from and why the Giant arrived on earth but some things are best left unexplained in life and in movies too so it also works in its favor.

It really was awesome and way ahead of its time, I'm glad i saved this for a day like this where i skipped a lot of films to choose this one instead.

Kagemusha (Shadow Warrior) (The Double) 1980,  PG)
Kagemusha (Shadow Warrior) (The Double)
If Hitchcock was the greatest director in the west then Akira is obviously and deservedly the master of the far east.

At a time where Hollywood seems to be lacking creativity and running out of ideas, it's always nice to watch a movie like this to remind you of the great film history outside the west. You can see the influences and where so many ideas are stolen or borrowed from.

This movie isn't perfect and although i was fine with the duration, i felt that they could have showed us more regarding the 3 year reign fir the homeless man as the Lord. Other than that and maybe some confusing parts like the battles, this is a fantastic achievement like so many others by this late director.

WALL-E 2008,  G)
WALL-E
A contender for best movie of 2008. Not many would agree but there is so much to this than what it seems. There is a message and it's an important one.

The animation is ground breaking and who ever managed to see it in the cinema probably at one point or another felt like they were watching a real live action movie. It's so crisp/sharp and mesmerizing. I felt the same way when I watched finding Nemo in the cinema and this had th exact same effect.

The concept and idea of the whole thing is fantastic. When i heard about it the first time I thought this would be a full length anime with just music and picture and o dialog. That would have been an achievement and a groundbreaking one but they decided to include humans in it and dialog. It didn't make the movie any worse but added more to the whole message. I really highly recommend this to Adults more than even kids. Just because it's an anime does not mean you should avoid.

Toy Story 2 1999,  G)
Toy Story 2
With the Toy Story 3 craze I have decided to watch all of them once more to remember how great this series of films have been. There aren't that many animated cartoons that could come up with three great films but Toy Story managed that.

Toy Story 2 in my opinion is the weakest one though. You can see how much the animation has improved by watching the 3rd one too. The story is good once again with questions that could be aimed at children and especially adults. Compared to the other two something was missing or maybe because the other were just really really good it's hard to tell. It felt shorter as well with not as many funny gags or as interesting characters. Jesse and her horse were great new characters though as we saw in the third one as well.

W. 2008,  PG-13)
W.
Hitler wanted to be a painter, he ended up being the most hated man that have ever lived. Bush wanted to be a baseball player, he ended up being the most hated man this decade and possibly the most hated president of all time. Funny how things could change in an individual's life. How do men like them go from such innocent dream to an extreme one?

This movie was all i wanted and more. When we heard Stone was directing we immediately though this will be another hate campaign against the soon to be ex president but Stone did a superb job in showing us a different side of maybe a misunderstood man. We all are misunderstood sometimes and the path we take could be anything. It just shows how things are never certain in life.

When Bush's dad started the gulf war, Bush Jr. ended it. In the movie it seems like we are being told that all Dubya wanted was his dad's approval that he never received unlike his brother. Bush became the president and beat his dad's record by staying 4 more years and getting rid of Saddam from this life. Whether this was a personal war or just a conspiracy we will never know in this life time but it's an interesting prospect or theory to the last 8 years of his presidency.

The movie has heart and I left feeling good afterwards because I realized that it is never impossible to achieve what you want. Bush is not or never was the sharpest tool in the box but he changed his life around to becoming the most powerful man. Surely that is inspirational enough to anyone who dreams.

The performance was one of the best I have seen this year. I really feel like Brolin deserves an Oscar nominee for what he did. The performances in general by all Bush's staff were fantastic. Dick Chaney was spot on, even the looks. At some points it felt like i was watching the news because he looked so much like him.

I am baffled by the negative feedbacks and low ratings but if you enjoy movies, acting, politics and Oliver Stone than this is really one of the best movies this year.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada 2006,  R)
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
This is an absolutely stunning film in so many ways. It reminded me a lot of No country for old men where characters are flawed, they are discovering new things and going through one hell of an experience. I am amazed at how good some actors are turning out to be as directors, like Ben Affleck or Tommy Lee Jones here.

The movie is about two friends, one an American and the other a Mexican. He asks Pete to promise that he will take his body back to Mexico to his wife and kids if he dies. His friend dies and Pete investigates who killed his friend. This leads to a journey that two men will never forget.

The movie comes in different parts and we deal with a few scenarios that lead to the finale. I won't spoil it for anyone but I can definitely say that this is a very original, funny and beautiful movie. Barry Pepper is exceptional and so is Tommy Lee Jones.

The climax of the movie is one of the best I have seen in a while and it will definitely leave you thinking about it all for a while. Highly recommended.

Taxi Driver 1976,  R)
Taxi Driver
My favourite De Niro movie and he has a few good ones as we all know. In my opinion his best colabo with Martin Scorsese.

De Niro gives a chilling performance of a man with a soul that's still being tortured from nam' war he was in. Seriously who would take a first date to a porn theatre?

Jodie Fosters also gives a great performance as a young Prostitute, who De Niro make friends with and trys to help which leads to the outstanding finish to a 70's classic masterpiece.

And probably everyone and their mother already know about the "you talking to me?" scene, great stuff.

The New World 2005,  PG-13)
The New World
One of the most beautiful films I've ever seen on the screen. No one but Malick could so such a movie with so much beauty in it. A film about discovery, love and beauty.

It's a movie you either will love or hate. Very slow but every second made a difference to me. Every shot was done to perfection, each one had a meaning.

It was like poetry on a screen, a bunch of paintings put together to tell a story. Acted so well by all, specially the 14 year old Q'Orianka Klicher.

Astonishing and Brilliant, can't get over how beautiful the movie was.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
It has been a while since I watched this film but nothing has changed, it still is one of the best I have ever seen. It has that special feeling to it, the myth of the character and the narrating is perfect.

Everything about it is special. The soundtrack is amazing, the cinematography is amazing, the acting is amazing and the pace is amazing. There aren't that many memorable westerns now days but this definitely is there with some of the best westerns that's been made during John Wayne and Clint Eastwoods era.

There Will Be Blood 2007,  R)
There Will Be Blood
a perfect portrayal of human greed by the man who seems to always give 110% when he is acting. The movie's pace seems to be a big problem with many, just like the assassination of Jesse James which was another gem but if a movie is good, pace does not matter too much.

The whole beginning of the movie sets it all nicely, the ere music alone kind of makes up your mind about what kind of movie this is going to be. A very unique soundtrack/score that works perfectly with the kind of character we are watching.

Out of all the great Westerns that came out recently, this was easily one of the best acted and in my opinion a far superior movie to No Country For Old Men, even with the way it portrays the message. Daniel Day Lewis is a man that deserves all the praise he gets and this movie proves it.
114
JFK 1992,  R)
JFK
This is one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. One of the best too. A lot of people have argued that Oliver Stone is just bitter and this is not accurate but what is? I am not saying everything in the movie was fact but anyone with common sense would know that there is a conspiracy and that there was a cover up and still is after all those years.

It's been proven scientifically and even by witnesses on that day, the people that were there, as well as video evidence of the fatal shot coming from the front and not where 'Oswald' apparently was.

The speech at the end was one of the best and most touching i have ever heard. Kevin Costner does a brilliant job and brings out a lot of emotions and it concludes the movie perfectly.

The 60's were a hard time for America. A lot of people died from conspiracy and for what? Only an idiot and a naive person would really think that all those deaths have been a coincidence, especially when it came to evidence.

This is a powerful movie and this conspiracy will be with us through out our life time. This may not all be facts but it is so close and it opens your mind on how scary some things are. Things that we don't think about much that happen behind closed doors. Powerful men with too much power and influence.

The Sting 1973,  PG)
The Sting
After watching Bitch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid i couldn't wait to watch The Sting. Why you ask? Because of the great partnership of Newman and Redford. Here, once again with another great scrip, directing and editing as well as acting we have another classic.

There are so many actors and actresses out there who we all wish worked together, or together more often and those two to me are two actors I wish had done more movies together. Hell, they should have been in Oceans 11. How perfect would that have been?

As for The Sting, what can I say? There isn't anything bad to say really. It's smart & witty with the perfect start and to me, a perfect sending off to a great partnership at the end. I wont spoil it for anyone who had not seen it yet though so that's all I shall say regarding that.

What a perfect score as well, i think i might have a new director in my favorite list.

Badlands 1973,  PG)
Badlands
There is no doubt that Terrence Malick is a special director. Someone who is so unique and mysterious. I have always been a believer of quality over quantity and that is what he stands for. The man only has 4 full length features after years of being in the business but from the 3 films i have seen so far, they are all classics and beautiful in their own way.

I still find The New World to be the most intriguing of them all but this is easily one of the most influential movies I've seen. Now i see where many road trips and crime/drama with similar plots got many of their ideas from and like many said, specially Quentin Tarantino.

Martin Sheen is amazing as Kit, his beauty and charisma on screen plus Terrence attention and dedication for each shot are just some of the great things that make this movie so great.

I can definitely say now that after Hitchcock, Terrence is easily my favourite director alive right now. What a man.

I have been a fan of Casey Affleck for a while now and I can truly say that he probably out did his great acting in Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. The last time i saw a great character who was a psychopath is probably Anthony Perkins Norman Bates in Psycho (1960).

This film is predictable according to some people but I didn't see where the film even tried to be unpredictable in the first place. It was a film mostly based on Casey Affleck's character and his behaviour more than the story itself and he did an exceptional job.

The scenes that many have been talking about are definitely hard to watch and shockingly realistic as well. Casey Affleckâ??s facial expression makes it all the more menacing to watch.

I thought the whole cast were fantastic as well. I am not the biggest fan of Jessica Alba when it comes to her choices of films and acting but she played a pretty damn good whore here. It was also quite a cool cameo from Bill Pullman even though he doesn't do much.

I think the debate is, who got punched harder Alba or Hudson? Ouch...

Unforgiven
It's been a long time. There was a time when Westerns were made in big numbers, it was the genre to be in. Now days we hardly get any, other than a Gay cowboy movie and a very well made Open Range, this is probably the last great Western made to this date. Clint Eastwood, a man very familiar with it decides to end his Western love with a movie that presents everything that he ever played in the genre back in the day perfectly.

The cast is also done to perfection, Gene Hackman, Richard Harris and Morgan Freeman all do a fantastic job.

The plot is really simple like many Westerns but it's the powerful characters and acting that makes this a classic. Definitely in my top list now.

Clint Eastwood's days are maybe numbered but the man is a legend and when his chapter closes, to me this is probably by far his best directed movie. A perfect way of saying Goodbye to the genre that made him who he is.

Many say this is David Lynches best, I'm not sure about that but it was a great movie. Dennis Hopper in one of his best roles ever.

Y Tu Mamá También
One of my favourite road trip movies. A surprising ending, sweet and sad relationship that builds up between the 3 characters and the beautiful landscape of parts in Mexico.
