The Tree of Life
PG-13
The tree of life is only the fifth movie directed by Terrence Malick in over 40 years.
We all know that Malick has his own unique way of directing a film, and his visuals are sublime to say the least. However, a film must not only be about photography and symbolisms. A lot of comparisons have arisen with 2001, and I don't quite agree on that, because a space odyssey had its little plot while the tree of life was all about visuals. In addition, even if a plot was inserted, Terrence Malick, as powerful as he is, ain't no Stanley Kubrick.
The pair of Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain did great, but I think that Sean Penn was heavily misused here. However, one can't give the credit of the visuals for Terrence Malick without giving praise to the director of photography, Emmanuel Lubezki, who previously was nominated for the best cinematography oscar five years earlier for children of men, and will probably win it this time late February.
As a film, I insist the tree of life didn't deliver, but will be taught in photographic courses for long years to come.
The Artist
PG-13
When a film receives a backing from Harvey Weinstein, the hype grows tremendously and most commonly, the film becomes a little overrated.
I went to watch the artist in that specific frame of mind, and was happy to find out how mistaken I was.
Being the only full silent film for three consecutive decades, we can say Michel Hazanavicius played risky with innovation, but the essential thing was the result he had in his hands when the editing was done.
Every single scene has been flawlessly executed, and ideas floating around into the director's head were so intuitive and brilliantly processed on screen. What made Hazanavicius' task easier was the charisma of Jean Dujardin, who would surely win the oscar for Best Smile if there ever was one. He led the film in style and never misstepped. His counterpart was splendid as well, but the movie will always belong to Dujardin's supreme presence on screen.
Taken all that, the artist takes you through a wonderful adventure of friendship, love, pain and depression, and will make your movie experience one you will never forget in your entire lifetime.
And for the first time since no country for old men, I'm fully backing a film to win all major Oscars, because just simply, it was the best film of the year, and that fact is non-negociable.

The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
PG-13
There won't ever be a Trilogy as perfect as the mighty Lord of the Rings, and it couldn't have a better start than this. It is absolutely perfect in every aspect, from the direction to the acting to the cinematography and the art direction (especially the elvish locations) the film is just flawless. But what really blew me away was Howard Shore's imaginary beautiful soundtrack who led the picture very creatively from scene to scene. The casting was very clever it seems every actor was born to play his character. It is and will remain my favorite Lord of the Rings movie, very narrowly edging the return of the king.
The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King
PG-13
The perfect conclusion to the perfect saga. Peter Jackson brought back every good aspect from the predecessors, enhanced them and delivered to us the return of the king, who went on for a clean sweep of 11 academy awards, only equaled by Ben-Hur and Titanic. This is a clean masterpiece because there's absolutely no flows, and every scene is just mind-blowing. From the Battle of Minath Tirith, to the encounter with Shelob, and finally to the pinnacle with the Black Gate confrontation, this film will be remembered as one of the best battle fantasy movie ever created, and it's practically the same for the whole Trilogy, which was the best thing we had in the 2000's decade. A record breaking of 30 academy award nominations for the trilogy, winning 17 just says it all.
