Fight Club 1999,  R)
Fight Club
David Fincher is sick in a perfect way.

My #1 film of all time currently. NOTHING tops it...STILL. I've watched this movie like 25 times and every time I watch it, even if I gotta go take a piss, I PAUSE THE MOVIE cuz I can't miss a scene.

Every actor is on point. Pitt is simply badass. Norton is amazing. Bonham Carter dominates. Fincher has such an unrelenting need to film each shot perfectly that he routinely uses over 50 takes for important scenes...dude takes his shit seriously. I think that's why I love this movie so much - every single shot is painstakingly crafted. No movie comes close to this masterpiece.

**BEST MOVIE THERE EVER HAS BEEN AND EVER WILL BE**
2
The Matrix 1999,  R)

5

Pan's Labyrinth
This movie screams: MAKE FILMS to anyone interested in telling stories.

The cinematography is hands down one of the finest use of camerawork in film's history. Creative and inspiring as all hell, this movie kicks ass. If you haven't seen this, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to one of the most visually dazzling movies ever made. If you have seen this movie, and you're just thinking..."meh," then go FUCKING SHOOT YOURSELF.

Love this damn film.
6
Seven (Se7en) 1995,  R)
Seven (Se7en)
A tension-packed drama with Fincher behind the wheel, driving this beauty into the Hollywood Hall of Fame. 90's classic.
7
Pulp Fiction 1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
Ebert said it best: the dialogue is so good it could be enjoyed as an audio tape.

Great characters, great concepts, great story structure...A+

Even after SEVERAL rewatches, the movie just gets better and better. The variety of characters interacting with one another make this the gem of all gems.
8
The Shawshank Redemption 1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
this movie basically ripped my soul out of my chest, cared for it, gave it food and nourishment, and then returned it to my body as a much improved spirit...incredible movie.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
PUT IT IN THE BASKET CHIEF...STUFF THAT SONUFA BITCH IN THERE!!

And the fact that the rest of the movie kicks ass as well...goooood film.
13
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
HOLY SHIT SEE THIS IN IMAX!

Just watched this bad boy AGAIN last night...first time I've seen the same movie twice in less than 24 hours....

First of all, Heath Ledger steals the movie. No one comes CLOSE to matching him on-screen. EVERY SCENE he delivers is phenomenal...he grabs you right from the start (a kickass way to begin the film by the way) and doesn't let go. His character is probably my favorite villain depicted in any movie EVER as of now. What an incredible performance - balancing the sick/twisted dementia with a touch of humor. He OWNED this movie.

I really enjoyed the film - Nolan once again uses expert pacing to build tension, giving the film a fantastic momentum (something I've seen every single one of his films possess). You can tell he had a lot of fun making the movie what it is...it's a shame he lost the battle with Warner Bros over his original 3 hour cut. Honestly, if it gets released on DVD as a director's cut, I would watch it and probably give this a 5 /5. Something just seemed a little off around the climax...it was very interesting but just didn't have enough of a BANG. What I did like, however, was that it was an immensely psychological conclusion. The chess matches going on between the characters unwound nicely and we're left with a fitting end to the film. This movie had a LOT of psychology in it...so it really took me another viewing to fully appreciate the movie.

This is a DARK BROODING film that is not easily digested after you watch it. I thought Iron Man was a realistic, dark movie as well...but this just towers over it. You're left with a certain shock when you leave the theater. It's still hard to articulate.

I could go on and on about the performances from Bale and Eckhart, the spiraling storyline, and even the kickass stunt sequences....but you get the picture.

Great film - best of 08 thus far.

EDIT: After seeing this 3 times, I have to give it a perfect score. HOOB AH!
14
Cool Hand Luke 1967,  PG)
Cool Hand Luke
Spellbinding performance from Newman...one for the AGES. His finest role, hands down.
15
Casino Royale 2006,  PG-13)
Casino Royale
Easily my fav bond movie...I've honestly only seen bits and pieces of most of the early work...but I can guarantee you i LOVE the direction craig is taking.

After watching this movie religiously about 2-3 times a month now, I have to bump it up to a perfect score. The movie just kicks too much ass. I know it shouldn't "deserve" a 5/5, but I don't care. I love it too much.
16
Schindler's List 1993,  R)
Schindler's List
Spielberg's finest effort.
17
The Godfather, Part II 1974,  R)
The Godfather, Part II
it's rare to see such a mainstream film go in such an unmainstream direction...fantastic movie. In fact, it's damn near perfect.
18
Office Space 1999,  R)
Office Space
my favorite comedy of all time.
19
Saving Private Ryan 1998,  R)
Saving Private Ryan
Okay shit this is a great movie...the characters just shine too damn brightly...I swear Barry Pepper is a fucking supernova...the guy's incredible. While the movie doesn't really have more of an agenda than to reaffirm the good ole patriotic way (in sharp contrast to The Thin Red Line)....it's just such a compelling story. Tom Sizemore is a fucking lunatic by the way
20
Batman 1989,  PG-13)
Batman
I have this ranked higher than Begins not necessarily because it's a better movie, but because this movie was perhaps the first film to awaken a great love of badass protagonists inside me. From here on out, I began emulating Batman, James Bond, the Ninja Turtles, Superman, Spiderman, etc. Burton creates such a twisted universe that you have to give him credit. While Nolan is a superior director in my eyes (not by much)...Burton just has this wonderful nostalgia laced in all of his films. I just love this film to pieces.
21
Layer Cake 2004,  R)
Layer Cake
Daniel Craig's resume for Casino Royale. Just watched this for the 3rd time tonight...the soundtrack for this movie is amazing. And so is Sienna Miller half-naked. DAYUM!

UPDATE: I have now watched this movie at least 6-7 times now. I'm hypnotized by the British Barney Rubble accents. I still am picking up crucial plot details I completely missed the 3rd, 4th, and 5th go-round.

Regardless, this movie is clean, serene, and pristine. Well, almost pristine. Love that shit!
22
Boogie Nights 1997,  R)
Boogie Nights
one of the FUNNEST movies I've ever seen...definitely one of my personal favorites. PTA is amazing.

Just had a kickass dinner and a movie night with this badboy - recommended for those who have already seen the film - but when you invite over people that haven't seen it...CONFUSION SETS IN!

It's still bad ass - it blends moments of shear comic genius with heartbreaking depression - really a twisted cocktail of a film. But a damn damn good one - love this movie, love Marky Mark and PSH...and Burt Reynolds is immaculate. Baller!
23
Die Hard 1988,  R)
Die Hard
The perfect action movie.
24
Clerks 1994,  R)
Clerks
Guilty pleasure, yes. But the dialogue and shoe string budget are an inspiration. This movie is fucking hilarious.
25
Reservoir Dogs 1992,  R)
Reservoir Dogs
the first tarantino film i ever watched..this really pulled me in DEEP.

Drags a bit in places and takes too many liberties, but tension is tight throughout..great fucking movie
26
Back to the Future 1985,  PG)
Back to the Future
80's masterpiece...as chock full of pop culture as it gets..and yet still timeless...weird
27
Batman Begins 2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
Christopher Nolan bringing Batman back from the dead, great reboot to the series. Love the story. Only complain is that the ending with the Scarecrow was a bit weak. That's about it.
28
American Psycho 2000,  R)
American Psycho
Oh my goodness...Christian Bale...you made this movie incredible...honestly without him, this may have been only a "decent" film...he's just that good in it. What a foreaking amazing character!

After rewatching it for the bajillionth time, gotta say the review still holds up strictly because of Christian Bale's superb performance.

Try to get a reservation at Dorsia now, you FUCKING STUPID BASTARD.
29
The Prestige 2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige

Collateral 2004,  R)
Collateral
I love this movie more and more every time I watch it

And after the billionth rrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeewaaaaatch,

I still give it 4.5 stars. Michael Mann's second best film...without a doubt a movie that balls on all levels.

Especially when you got some serious philosophy and deep observations about life thrown into the mix without coming across as cliche and forced...rare gem baby.
32
Cinema Paradiso (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso) 1988,  R)
Cinema Paradiso (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso)

Good Will Hunting
This film's got HEART. Or, in Bahston: HAAAAAAAAAAHT.

Great movie.

Big Fish
Damn you Big Fish...damn you.

The Big Lebowski

37
Being John Malkovich 1999,  R)
Being John Malkovich
quirky and incredibly well written
38
25th Hour 2003,  R)
25th Hour
Edward Norton is a virtuoso...the "fuck you" rant was awesome.

UPDATE: After a good 4th rewatch, this movie holds up stronger than Schwarzenegger annihilating mother sucker after mother sucker in Commando.

The performances are, for every single actor, on point. I won't say this movie "keeps it real"...because I've never been to New York and don't have a reference point, but 25th Hour makes every attempt to be brutally honest with every single scene, and that is really something else. I don't feel like anything is exaggerated...everything cuts to the core.

Great film.
39
The Graduate 1967,  PG)
The Graduate
from the great script, memorable dialogue, innovative camerawork, and brilliant direction...there's a lot of reasons why this movie owns
40
L.A. Confidential 1997,  R)
L.A. Confidential
Brilliant. The final shootout in the house was epic.
41
Ed Wood 1994,  R)
Ed Wood
Brilliant film...always overlooked. Seems like fans of Burton almost never bring this movie up...I think it's one of his best. Depp is hysterical.

THESE BAPTISTS ARE DRIVING ME CRAZY. THEY'RE STUPID STUPID STUPID!

Martin Landau delivers probably the best performance of his career as Bela Legosi. The scene where he wraps himself up in a plastic octopus in a pool at 4 in the morning is hilarious.

The whole movie kicks so much ass, and yet I consistently come across people who haven't even heard of it. Idiots
42
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial 1982,  PG)
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
Why we go to the movies in the first place...Spielberg's second best movie (behind Schindler's List)...in fact, here's the ranking as I see it:

2) ET
3) Close Encounters
4) Jaws

Boom.

Raging Bull

45
The Getaway 1972,  R)
The Getaway
Old school action flick...dialogue is among the best.

UPDATE: Steve McQueen's relationship with Ali MacGraw is awesome...dude is straight slapping a bitch when she gets out of line.

Man this movie is packed with intense shootouts, car chases, and fisticuffs. Every scene is just a-CRACKLIN' with vibrational BUZZZZZZZZ.

And even the final getaway cruise the duo takes with this old cowboy and his beatup pickup truck is hilarious and a blast to watch. Some of the ole timer's lines include:

"Hey, how was that one?" (After launching the car across an enormous gap and spilling shit everywhere)
"I don't reckon you're gonna shoot me, are ya?"
"Don't you worry, I'll cooperate. See, I've kinda been in trouble with the law myself" (Then he drives them across the Mexican Border)
"Gott damn Boy!" (After McQueen pays him 30 grand for his services)

1970's Steve McQueef at his greatest. Glory days!

51
Into the Wild 2007,  R)
Into the Wild
Part of me wants to view McCandless as a man who gained every ounce of life one could hope to grasp within a short time on earth. The other half of me longs to think that he's wrong - to take solace in the fact that where I'm headed in life is where I want to be going. Penn's movie leaps into the soul of a man, and doesn't conclude until his soul has been exhausted. I am left torn in half by Hirsch's performance as one of the most spiritually gifted individuals of our time. To see all of the lives he touched, and his epiphany regarding human relationships makes me freeze for a moment. I'm stuck inside of this film - and I think I'll be here for a while.

What an amazing journey.

I went into this badboy with high expectations. Extremely high expectations. And I gotta say that I walked out of that theater with a gigantic fucking smile on my face. GREAT MOVIE GREAT GREAT FUCKING MOVIE.

Colin Farrell actually acts in this movie, Ralph Fiennes is the perfect villain, and the script is spot perfect. Good GOD this script is great! When it wants you laugh, you fucking laugh. When it wants you to feel a bit grim or contemplative, you bury your head in your hands and just say "shit!" - the balance between heavy moments and lighthearted glee is superb. You must see this movie at once - so far my fav. of 08!

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2003,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Easily my favorite of the three, had some very intense sequences. What's unfortunate, though, is how dated the green-screening is actually looking. Some sequences with the hobbits had me scratching my head at how obvious it was...but that's just nitpicking. Great story, great characters, tremendously epic battles. Viggo Mortensen's transformation into a total badass warrior was fantastic.
