Fallen Angels 1995,  Unrated)
Fallen Angels
One of my favorite films. Wong Chi-Ming is simply a super-hero character and could hardly be played better. Lai's character is only matched by "The Killer's Agent." Some images of this film are imprinted with me: the black-and-white waterfall scene with Zhiwu Hu and his unrequited love. Every scene (with Wong) with the Massive Attack dub track, and (with Zhiwu) his first meeting with his love, on the phone, his head silently over her shoulder.

This film is beautiful. My favorite Wong Kar Wai. period.

Visitor Q (Bijitâ Q) 2001,  R)
Visitor Q (Bijitâ Q)
I especially appreciate this film (as one of my favorite Miike films).

This is pretty much the prototypical Miike film, there's casual, brutal violence, incest, rape, lactating, plenty of ridicule and shame... basically the whole bit.

But what makes Visitor Q special to me is the use of handheld cameras really effectively both by "the visitor" and the dad to portray the perspective of the spectacle. In true Miike fashion, everything is undone: lives are discarded, personalities are torn apart, and... and Kenichi Endo is especially good, wow.

The first scene (the incest-prostitution scene), too, is breathtakingly raw and eerie

Sanxia Haoren (Still Life) 2006,  Unrated)
Sanxia Haoren (Still Life)
This film totally blew my mind. I came to it with no expectation and was left with the utmost respect for who is said to be one of the new great directors of mainland China. The cinematography, sound, and locations are vibrant, in constant motion. The characters are lethargic and dull. This film resonates destruction and disorder throughout.

Hannah and Her Sisters 1986,  PG-13)
Hannah and Her Sisters
Simply the mid or late-career Woody Allen film. Certainly it is hard to compare to Love and Death or Sleeper, absolutely different. However, according to his more dramatic films, this is idilic mastery.
