Pulp Fiction 1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
My all time favorite film, the movie that made watching films a hobby rather than a pass time for me. Its one of those films that get better over time and is more entertaining after multiple viewings.

The fact that when you know whats gonna happen and you know the awesome dialogue by heart makes it an even better experience to watch. Samuel Jackson, John Travolta, Harvey Keitel and Bruce Willis were all spectacular and in their prime, especially Jackson.

The only negative part of the film for me was that a few scenes could have been trimmed down to quicken the pace a bit such as the one at the 50s restaurant , if that scene was a bit shorter this film would be perfect.

I love films that you can just talk to your mates about for ages. Pulp Fiction is one of those films.

The Shawshank Redemption 1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
A masterpiece, it's very had to meet find someone who doesn't like this film. it can be appreciated on so many levels. When I studied this film in high school I must have watched it at least 5 times and I still didn't get sick of it.

The acting by Tim Robbin and Morgan Freeman was outstanding, they create very endearing characters in Andy and Red. All the characters had so much depth and were interesting to watch, even the supporting characters such as Brooks who served as foils for the main cast could have had a film of their own. Warden Norton is one of the most memorable antagonists in film and you just love to hate him and see him get his just desserts from Andy at the end.

The technical work was brilliant as well with awesome cinematography that gives the prison a life of its own. This is one of my favourite films of all time and the most respected piece of film work I've seen. A must see for anyone with a pulse.
3
GoodFellas 1990,  R)
GoodFellas
The greatest gangster movie of all time. Scorsese's masterpiece. Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci deliver the best performances of their careers. Classic scenes and dialogue. Goodfellas is one of my favorite films.
4
Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991,  R)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
This is the foremost example of a sequel far surpassing the original in entertainment value and substance. The CG in this film was incredible for its time and James Cameron directed this flawlessly creating characters you will never forget and a message we can all take home and think about.
The action is fuckin' awesome too.
5
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
An incredible film and the best Batman movie yet. I've never enjoyed another movie in the theater as much as this one. A masterpeice of the superhero genre. The fact that this didn't sweep up the Oscars shows the subjectivity of the Academy.

Character development of Harvey Dent was awesome, Heath Ledger as the joker was one of the best performances I've ever scene, the joker stole the show. The directing by Nolan demonstrates why he's one of the best in Hollywood right now.

The action scenes were terrific and not predictable at all. A good analysis on the hero psyche to see how far the villain can push him. Batmans voice was the only gripe I had.
6
Fight Club 1999,  R)
Fight Club
A top class satire of modern American culture and male masculinity. This is Pitts greatest role in his acting career as the mysterious anarchist Tyler Durden. He's so good at playing charismatic wackos. Norton was outstanding also. My favorite David Fincher film and one of my favorite plot twists in a movie.
7
Braveheart 1995,  R)
Braveheart
Mel Gibson's greatest achievement. This is such a powerful film and every time I see it it takes me to the same emotional heights that the film delivers.

The acting, make-up, screenplay, music and cinematography were all excellent and worked together to deliver its powerful themes of freedom and justice.

The only thing wrong i can think of at the moment is a scene where two men are fighting in the background of a battle scene and they're clearly just filling up space on the screen with their children like sword-play.

But this film had it all with memorable dialogue, classic scenes, great emotional impact and entertaining for the entire duration of the film.
8
Snatch 2001,  R)
Snatch
This movie proves that Guy Richie is a genius in making gangster crime movies and Brad Pitt is one of the great actors of our time capable of delivering a performance that not only stands out in a film but elevates it as a whole.

There are so many memorable quotes that we have drinking games to them. This is one of my all time favorite British films and tops Richie's previous gem Lock stock and two smoking barrels.
9
The Matrix 1999,  R)
The Matrix
A new age masterpiece. A movie that has so many levels with some of the most interesting ideas on the human condition and our perception of reality along with the most creative and stunning action sequences ever in cinema.

A guy I work with recently said he hasn't seen it yet and i just felt like slapping him. The Matrix is a must see for any cognitive being. If you can't fathom the existential themes this film offers then the action sequences will keep you on the edge of your seat.
10
Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai) 1954,  Unrated)
11
Cidade de Deus (City of God) 2002,  R)
Cidade de Deus (City of God)
A fascinating and grim story set in The City of God within Rio de Janeiro. This is a very shocking film where children run the streets with guns and the avergare life expectancy is about 20.

The film centers around Rocket a young man with a dream of becoming a photographer while he's living in one of the most dangerous places on earth the City of God and it shows how he deals with surviving on a daily basis and his relationship with the growing gangs and wars in the streets.

This is a must see movie. Its a very dark and vivid portrayal of a city overrun with murder.
12
Reservoir Dogs 1992,  R)
Reservoir Dogs
Quentin Tarantino's directorial debut but what really stands out in this is his writing, Reservoir Dogs has one the most sharpest scripts ever. In the opening minutes Tarantino creates some of his most appealing characters and memorable dialogue.

There are also many moments of his directing genius this especially evident during his long tracking shots with an amazing use of sound and music. Harvey Keitel and Tim Roth deliver exceptional performances and produce an astounding ending through their terrific acting.
In any list of Tarantinos best this comes second behind Pulp fiction and rightly so.
13
Training Day 2001,  R)
Training Day
A real authentic portrayal of LA gang and drug culture. The direction by Antoine Fuqua was almost perfectly executed and the fact that he filmed in real locations most which many people would never dare enter shows his commitment and talent.

Denzel Washinton's most memorable performance deserving of the Oscar he received. Alonzo is a real tragic character who puts on a tough front but is really begging for his life throughout the movie.

A brilliant student vs mentor movie and one of the best films depicting police corruption.
14
Unforgiven 1992,  R)
15
Remember the Titans 2000,  PG)
16
The Graduate 1967,  PG)
The Graduate
This is such a timeless film, you wouldn't believe it was made over 40 years ago. Every scene held my attention and in between there were great catchy folk songs, there was never a dull moment for me.

The acting by Anne Bancroft and Dustin Hoffman was superb They gave their characters do much attitude and depth. The character development of Ben is some of the best I have seen in a movie, starting off as the shy indecisive young college student into the man hellbent on his mission of blind love. After recently watching Rain Man and now The Graduate I think Dustin Hoffman is definitely one the best actors of all time.

This was an unbelievable film it had some very funny and captivating moments, I can't believe I hadn't seen this earlier!
17
American Gangster 2007,  R)
18
Saving Private Ryan 1998,  R)
Saving Private Ryan
The opening scene of the allied forces landing on Omaha beach is a great cinematic achievement, with such raw intensity and realism you could feel as if you were fighting alongside the allied troops. The rest of the film ain't too bad either.
19
Hotel Rwanda 2004,  PG-13)
Hotel Rwanda
A moving true story about a man who risked his life to help many others in a desperate situation during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Don Cheadle was on top of his game in this giving an outstanding performance as Paul Rusesabagina, I never once questioned his character as a genuine Rwandan.

There so many cruel and heartbreaking moments with small glimpses of hope and humanity coming primarily from Paul. Its a film that can also make you angry as it did for me knowing that in only 3 months one million people were murdered while the rest of the world just turned a blind eye and did nothing.

A very powerful movie.
20
The Pursuit of Happyness 2006,  PG-13)
The Pursuit of Happyness
A very touching and inspirational true story. Will smith gives his best performance yet becoming a bona fide dramatic actor.
21
WALL-E 2008,  G)
WALL-E
My favorite Pixar film. Also one of the best love stories Ive seen and its between two non-human like robots. The animation is absolutely incredible to where you're not sure whats animated or not. This should also definitely get an Oscar for sound. The story is great and not too predictable and its themes are clearly expressed. I saw this film twice in a row, which Ive never done before.
22
A Bronx Tale 1993,  R)
A Bronx Tale
This was great movie definitely one of my favorite mafia films, De Niro is not only a very good actor but he directed this excellently, the character Sonny is one of my all time favorite film characters too a gangster you can completely understand. If you like Goodfellas or The Godfather you definitely have to check this one out.
23
Cinderella Man 2005,  PG-13)
Cinderella Man
One of the most inspirational true stories I have seen. An engrossing and emotionally moving film about one of the greatest comebacks in boxing history.
Russell Crowe gives one of his best performances as James J Braddock and I have no idea why he didn't get another Oscar nomination for this. James was a centered character and very easy to relate to.
Paul Giamatti was fantastic as his loyal and passionate manger.
This is also the only film I actually liked Renée Zellweger in. She was great as James' wife Mae and really sold the deep relationship between them and the devotion to her children.
Excellent directing by Ron Howard some really good in ring camera work and use of flashbacks. He gave such a vivid portrayal of the great depression and how hard it was for people.
I have to give this 5 since its now one of my all time favorite true stories and sports films.
A must see.
24
The Departed 2006,  R)
The Departed
This was an amazing film. It restored Scorsese as the king of crime action drama and put DiCaprio among the top actors in Hollywood today.

The acting and directing were almost flawless. Mark Wahlberg was great and had such a presence in his small role as the foul mouthed take no shit police captain. The scene where Martin Sheen falls off a building made me gasp and the elevator scene was amazing never has anything in a film made me just lost for words, so beautifully directed.

This is possibly the greatest remake ever exceeding the original Japanese Infernal Affairs. This got me into the band Dropkick Murphys, the shipping to Boston song fit so well with this film. This film is one of Scorsese's recent best films.
25
Shoot 'Em Up 2007,  R)
Shoot 'Em Up
I went into watching this with honestly no expectations whatsoever and this just had me in a fit of laughter for almost the entire movie. This had ridiculous over the top action, incredibly dark humour, and some of the cheesiest dialogue ever, and thats what makes this fuckin' awesome. Its totally tongue and cheek to its core and you can tell they just went nuts while making it.

Paul Giamatti was such an awesome antagonist he was so smart, fucked up in the head and funny at the same time. The puns in this had me on the floor in laughter, "talk about blowing your load" " thats a hell of a handjob". This was totally my sense of humour which I admit is sort of fucked so it may not be for a lot of other people.

The people I know who don't like this film take it way too seriously, I actually can't see how they can though. Clive Owen shoots off a baby's umbilical cord in the opening scene, if you think this was going to be a serious realistic action flick after that then I have to say you're an idiot. One of my favorite action/comedies possibly overtaking True Lies, but this movie does take outrageous and silly to another level and pulls it off.

Pineapple Express 2008,  R)
Pineapple Express
Hilarious fuckin' movie it just makes you want to get stoned and go out and fight crime. Its set up much like Hot Fuzz with its tongue and cheek action and I actually enjoyed this more.

Some scenes were slow but the awesome action scenes and jokes really make up for it. This movie is really violent some of the most gruesome and bone crunching hits Ive seen in film.

This is what I want in a comedy original, clever and non-cheap looking, unlike most of the Hollywood comedies that have been released lately. And its good to see Rogen and Franco back together since Freaks and Geeks
32
Hot Fuzz 2006,  R)
Hot Fuzz
A true tongue and cheek comedy. It has some of the most exhilarating action scenes. Hot fuzz manages to brilliantly balance being serious enough to really appreciate but not too serious to be hilarious. I never thought I would find an old lady getting kicked in the face so funny. Pegg and Frost top Shaun of the dead with this.
33
Inglourious Basterds 2009,  R)
Inglourious Basterds
A fictional tale set in Nazi occupied France and in the twisted mind of Quentin Tarantino. Almost every scene built up tension with characters pitted against one another waiting for the first one to crack.

Christoph Waltz was amazing I've never seen his acting before but he gave a glorious portrayal as the Jew Hunting Col. Hans Lander, even though this man did horrible things during the course of the film I couldn't help but love how charismatic and jaunty he was. Brad Pitt looks like he had the time of his life in his role as Lt. Aldo Raine. I really enjoyed every scene he was in, and I laughed so hard at his feeble attempt at speaking Italian.

This film has so many great characters and their introductions in a very Tarantino manner gives them an even more memorable part in the film. A prime example Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz whom I will always remember as the crazy nazi killing basterd introduced in a very blaxploitation way. this movie had was so much tension it really held my attention during the very long winded Tarantino dialogue, which I do love but it can be too much.

There were a few problems that I had though which include the obscure film references Tarantino includes that don't serve any purpose in plot development nor be very interesting for a regular film goer. Also some scenes tried too hard at building tension such as the introduction of the bear Jew which I felt was half a minute too long.

This is in its core a revenge film. Jewish men and women blasting the shit out of Nazis. If you ever want to see Hitler get his just deserts watch this and see his body get mushed into putty by a hail of bullets from two very pissed off Jewish guys. There were some great action scenes between very long moments of dialogue and when the action does start it throws you off which makes it even more incredible. For people who dont like reading subtitles and must have constant action in a movie give this a miss. But for any Tarantino fan or film lover its a must see, Inglourious Basterds is Tarantino at his best.

Million Dollar Baby 2004,  PG-13)
35
Enter the Dragon 1973,  R)
36
Dogma 1999,  R)
Dogma
One of Kevin Smiths best movies. Some real funny jokes and incite on religion. It has a great balance of thoughtful and silly humour. Alan Rickman was so awesome as the monotonally morbid voice of god. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were so badass in this, they should team up in another Smith film again.

Spider-Man 2 2004,  PG-13)

Ong-Bak (Ong Bak: Muay Thai Warrior) 2005,  PG-13)
Ong-Bak (Ong Bak: Muay Thai Warrior)
The most recent martial arts masterpiece.
Its fight choreography and action scenes are just pure beauty.
A rather simple and contrived story but its fairly easy to follow so you can enjoy the stunning action sequences even more.
Once Tony Jaa learns fluent english he has the potential to become one of Hollywoods greatest action stars.

Once Were Warriors 1994,  R)
Once Were Warriors
An amazing story of domestic abuse, violence and poverty set in New Zealands modern Maori culture. It created the icon Jake the Muss brilliantly performed by Temuera Morrison. And the line "cook me some eggs woman" has become the infamous line for the "wife beaters" in New Zealand.

I'm from New Zealand so i know this isn't a general way of life here, but this movie is still a realistic and graphic portrayal of a broken home here in New Zealand. Also Jake beating the shit out of people was pretty sweet too.
41
Clerks 1994,  R)
42
Natural Born Killers 1994,  R)
Natural Born Killers
This was an orgie of gruesome action, sick humour and over the top characters and plot points. This was absolutely my cup of tea. People who see this as pointless exploitation of shock gore don't understand what Stone accomplishes here, which is pretty much a big FUCK YOU to the media and their whoring of violence and glamorization of psychopaths. Great performances and direction all around. You really need to dark sense of humour to laugh as much as I did in this movie though. A lot of people need to understand this is satire!

Good Will Hunting 1997,  R)

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope 1977,  PG)

Watchmen 2009,  R)
Watchmen
I've been waiting for this movie ever since I first read the book 2 years ago. Although I knew that the book is almost impossible to translate to film faithfully I still thought that the idea of Watchmen as a live action film is very interesting. I've read the book now 3 times and every time I've read it I enjoyed it even more than the previous time. The story has so much depth and layers to its story and characters. This film lived up to my expectations in that it was very entertaining but no where near as intelligent and articulate as the graphic novel.

Zack Snyder is a brilliant director his mark on Dawn of the Dead and 300 has made him one of the best action directors today. He definitely put his own visual style in watchmen and I thought it worked well. One fault I think of his though was that he tried so hard to stick to the source material that the movie was meshed with so many ideas that couldn't fit coherently into the 2:45 running time. What worked so well in the graphic novel felt so rushed and half done in the film.

The characters were almost all excellently portrayed. Jackie Earle Haley as Rorshach was one of the stand out performances. His character was right on the target to the graphic novel and the most interesting in the film. Like in the graphic novel when Rorshach wasn't in a scene I was anticipating his next appearance. Other great performances were from Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Patrick Wilson. They all emulated their respective characters faithfully while being entertaining and interesting as well. Malin Akerman as Ms Jupiter is one of the biggest let downs in the film. Her performance was borderline terrible. The only times I checked my watch and wasn't immersed in the experience of the film was when she was on screen.

For a running time of 2:45 this film really made the time pass by. The back stories of Dr Manhattan and Rorshach were the best moments in the film. The soundtrack fit well into the film although at times it felt a bit cheesy. But the opening sequence is one of my favorite cinematic openings with Bob Dylan's Times are changing. Perhaps multiple viewings of this movie would make me like it more as did with the graphic novel. But for now Its good but Dark Knight was better.
