SO GOOD! I can't describe it. Vivid colours, one-of-a-kind editing, great story, soundtrack...everything comes together to give this story a universal appeal and a truly visceral and lingering footprint.
Utterly brilliant. Spectacular special effects rendering it uber gory and totally believable. At its heart lies a painful story of love, ambition and the human affliction. A modern day Frankenstein perhaps. Cronenberg is the master.
Despite all the hype and knowing beforehand what the movie is about, it still blew my mind. The camera work was killer. It had a life all its own. Everything about the movie, running in reverse, the rape scene, the camerawork and editing, was incredible and surprisingly unpretentious despite the endevour. It all came together to give this film a feel and voice so real, you can feel its breadth on the back of your neck.
Proof that when it comes down to comedy, the Brits win the Yanks hands down. Comedy is very difficult to pull of, especially silly-absurd comedy, slapstick and witty comedy all in 1 film. This film achieves all 3 and then some. Genius, because without intelligence, silliness just ends up being a Singapore sitcom(you'll need to throw in a copius amount of terrible "acting" too).
Awesome! A truly entertaining and hilarious 'gore-medy'. Headbutting seagulls, exploding sheep, chainsawing aliens; this low-budget movie is a timeless classic. A homage to B movies.
Another great work by the Wachowski brothers. Very smart and very Orwellian. Refreshingly this is not set in America for once. A great film about the fight for one's ideals. Puts the protest back in your spirit.
Hugely underrated, this is an excellent movie. The acting was remarkable and the camera work added depth and realism. The concept and direction was genius. It is one of the scaries, most unsettling movies I've ever seen. People who don't appreciate this movie either knew too much about it beforehand or have to be spoon-fed typical Americanised "horror" flicks. I am speaking of the sort of movie that typically has teenagers getting killed almost comedically gruesomely; the killer is someone who was known to them all the while, at the end 1 couple survive and just when they thought everything was over, the villain somehow survives despite all odds and we are left with the token twist at the end, setting the movie up nicely for a few sequels. Sound familiar? Probably cos you've already seen at least a dozen or so of these colon-smears on screens since you were 9 years old; and unlike the rest of you, your intelligence remained 9.
Brilliant movie. It's so nice to watch a movie that makes such an impact. There are good movies and then there are great movies. This is a greatly awesome one. The dialouge is genius, the direction, characterization, cast, plot, the interweaving of storylines. Everything is awesome and it's a pleasure to watch.
This is the first Woody Allen film I've seen and I love it! Every second of it was great. The dialogue, the humour, Woody's neurotic behaviour. It flowed like a good wine.
I loved this film so much. It's so refreshing to watch an old classic that does not rely on gargantuan sets, classy actors and complicated storylines. The beauty of this film lies in its simplicity and it's actors' realism. Just goes to show that you don't always need razzle-dazzle and big actors to make a good film.
Fucking good film. The cinematography itself is so good that the film could be put on display at an art gallery, frame for frame. Such brilliant directing that I can't begin to describe it. The pacing, the acting, the interaction of the characters, the very deliberate and artful flow of the movie. It's really quite incredible. I especially like how it didn't veer, like so many other films of this sort would have, into a typified, generic sort of buddy movie. The script defiantly stayed away, retaining all its originality and rejecting predictability. Great film. If only more movies were as good as this.
Truly incredible. I've never seen any other film that has ever come close in the level of surrealism, uniqueness of editing and film score. This is more a visceral experience than a movie-type movie. It's fucking incredible. Warning: You have to NOT be expecting a movie with traditional conventions of a simple plot, narrative and so on. This is an exercise in surrealism and feeling, weirness and originality. If you like film for film's sake, you'll love this. Even after watching dozens the best films of every genre, this still impressed the shit out of me.
One hell of a sexy movie, especially compared to the types of movies at that time. This is sooo stylish and cool. I loved the swiftness and speed, the humour and casual off-handedness of this.
I thought a war movie made nearly 2 decades ago would not impress me. After seeing Saving Private Ryan and a bunch of these new, incredibly realistic and heartwrenching war movies, I didn't think this could compare. Boy was I wrong. This is really a classic. If there is just one war film, this has got to be it. It doesn't make the war seem like a viderogame adventure, nor does it overly moralize everything. It just is. Apparently Stone wanted to make a film about Nam from the soldier's perspective of how things just happened. He succeeded.
Brilliant film. I loved it so much. Truffaut is a genius and this was his first film. Incredible. I don't want to describe it, there is no need to. It's simply what a good film needs to be to me. The ending is the coolest I've ever seen in a film.
Why are the French so dammed good at making films like this. This one really spoke to me. Something about the nihilistic/existentialist-esque character caught in waves of his own passion and neurosis. Awesome. I love this film because it really spoke to me.
Utter perfection. There's a very unique aesthetic and style that is more zen and manga-like than flashy and overdone. It's similar to the understated cinematography of Takeshi Kitano's films while steering clear of the much imitated Lock Stock style. The story is rich and never cliched. The pacing is just perfect. I would describe this film as combing the plot complexity of Shakespeare, the blackness of Scarface with a comic book-like tendency for a sequence to open mid-scene. It's a joy to watch such a sublime film that is this fresh and original.
Fuck Star Wars and LOTR. This is what I call a trilogy worth it's salt. The impressive thing is that this film shares some similarities to Mr Vengeance but it's not merely a beta version to an original. Very beautiful artistically and so dark and morbid at the same time. Simply put an awesome film. Such a breath of fresh air from contemporary movies from Hollywood.
Another perfect piece from Chan Wook Park. This and Brotherhood of War are probably the best war films I've seen and definitely the only films about the North-South Korean war. JSA explores the tension and messiness brought about by the division of a country torn in 2, years after a bloody and painful war which is still a very ugly scar on Korea. The story is treated with tenderness and subtlety and displayes the most humanist and realistic characters ever portrayed on a screen. Not only is it a good movie but a very important one that I'm sure will be close to anyone's heart, not least Koreans.
Spectacular. The film is basically about a Casanova-type man. However, it doesn't simply resort to sequences of seduction or sex. It's extremely well written, never being predictable, always staying interesting. It packs more riveting dialogue, interesting anecdotes and philosophical musings than you might expect from a film about a womanizer. It probes deeply into its subject matter and even its secondary characters. Definitely one of the most well written films I've seen.
Probably the best noir film I've seen so far. It's got everything: the sense of unavoidable doom, claustrophobia, the anti-hero as well as unforgettable characters. One is reminded of Polanski's Chinatown and I can see how much this film must have informed his creation of it. Simply put. for a classic black and white fifties film, this is one cleverly written, extremely well acted and most of all, entertaining film.
