My Favorite Movies

1
Jaws 1975,  PG)
Jaws
The best film of all time! Works on every level, was way ahead of its time and set several precedents that usually fail to live up to it: The summer blockbuster, the natural disaster, man against nature, when animals attack etc.
2
Pulp Fiction 1994,  R)
3
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long) 2003,  PG-13)
4
American Beauty 1999,  R)
5
Boyz n the Hood 1991,  R)
Boyz n the Hood
Perfect performances all round. A real wake-up call for middle-America and a sobering counter to gangster rap which glorified gun culture.
6
Rocky 1976,  PG)
7
Taxi Driver 1976,  R)
8
Total Recall 1990,  R)
9
Death Wish 2 1982,  R)
Death Wish 2
That rarity; a superior sequel! The story is more simplified but this oozes style, particularly Herbie Hancock's score.
10
Death Wish 1974,  R)
11
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974,  R)
12
RoboCop 1987,  R)
RoboCop
Own this and ignore every else with the Robocop name on it.
13
Scarface 1983,  R)
14
Raging Bull 1980,  R)
Raging Bull
Scorsese. De Niro. Pesci. Gangsters. Boxing. What more could I ask for??
15
The Godfather 1972,  R)
16
The Godfather, Part II 1974,  R)
17
The Godfather, Part III 1990,  R)
The Godfather, Part III
Gets a bad rap because it was an unnecesary addition to the series. OK, so GFII reached a natural conclusion, but just because this wasn't necessary doesn't for one second mean it wasn't an excellent film! Don't approach it with sequel-phobia, this is just as good as its predeccesors.
18
Ali 2001,  R)
Ali
Will Smith does an excellent job as Ali, and thankfully the story doesn't gloss over Ali's less salubrious characteristics and incidents. Yes, he was a hero, but a flawed one (all the best ones are!) and this movie depicts that well.

Predator 1987,  R)

The Great White Hype 1996,  R)
The Great White Hype
Brilliant, brilliant boxing satire. You really have to be a boxing anorak to appreciate it, but highly recommended for those who are.
39
Jason's Lyric 1994,  R)
Jason's Lyric
Very strong emotional performance from all concerned, especially the virtually unknown Bokkem Woodbine. Half a star taken off for the over-cheesy romance scenes, though!
40
Do the Right Thing 1989,  R)
41
Léon (The Professional) 1994,  R)
42
First Blood (Rambo: First Blood) 1982,  R)
First Blood (Rambo: First Blood)
A very strong action movie which has you rooting for Rambo just as you do for Rocky, and the final scene is incredibly emotional. The speech the defeated Rambo delivers is a real tear-jerker!

If only Stallone had kept the momentum of this and the early Rockys going and not done increasingly diminishing action-by-numbers flicks. Because of all the dud movies he's been in (and obviously I include Rambo 2 and 3), people forget he was genuinely a fine actor. Certainly for my money the best "action" actor.

2001: A Space Odyssey 1968,  G)
2001: A Space Odyssey
Must have been a jaw-dropper in 1968, but didn't quite keep my attention enough. The ending is either so clever that I missed the point, or uber-artistic nonsense. Still, gets points for the vision, scale and direction.
