The best film of all time! Works on every level, was way ahead of its time and set several precedents that usually fail to live up to it: The summer blockbuster, the natural disaster, man against nature, when animals attack etc.
Gets a bad rap because it was an unnecesary addition to the series. OK, so GFII reached a natural conclusion, but just because this wasn't necessary doesn't for one second mean it wasn't an excellent film! Don't approach it with sequel-phobia, this is just as good as its predeccesors.
Will Smith does an excellent job as Ali, and thankfully the story doesn't gloss over Ali's less salubrious characteristics and incidents. Yes, he was a hero, but a flawed one (all the best ones are!) and this movie depicts that well.
Very strong emotional performance from all concerned, especially the virtually unknown Bokkem Woodbine. Half a star taken off for the over-cheesy romance scenes, though!
A very strong action movie which has you rooting for Rambo just as you do for Rocky, and the final scene is incredibly emotional. The speech the defeated Rambo delivers is a real tear-jerker!
If only Stallone had kept the momentum of this and the early Rockys going and not done increasingly diminishing action-by-numbers flicks. Because of all the dud movies he's been in (and obviously I include Rambo 2 and 3), people forget he was genuinely a fine actor. Certainly for my money the best "action" actor.
Must have been a jaw-dropper in 1968, but didn't quite keep my attention enough. The ending is either so clever that I missed the point, or uber-artistic nonsense. Still, gets points for the vision, scale and direction.
