The Flixster synopsis doesn't begin to do this movie justice -- although I don't know how you could describe it accurately and objectively at the same time.
This is the movie that got me into Film Noir. I had no idea what I was missing. (Also makes a great drinking game -- drink whenever Fred MacMurray calls Barbara Stanwyck "baby".)
Saw this for the first time when I was 12 or something and hated it, mainly because of the crappy Zombie make-up. For some reason, though (possibly the gore effects), I kept watching it, and as I got older I came to understand the themes Romero is dealing with, and was able to see past the effects and finally concentrate on the story. Now I see it for the true masterpiece it is. Still loses 1/2 a point, however, for the crappy Zombie make-up.
For years I'd bashed this movie -- but I kept watching, for some reason. Finally, like one of those Magic Eye pictures, I finally saw what everyone was talking about. It's a giant Rorschach test -- brilliant.
