Red Cliff (Chi Bi) 2008,  R)
Red Cliff (Chi Bi)
While most movies of this period would focus on the great Liu Bei, this story focuses on his generals and his allies' generals. One truly cannot understand the sheer power and awesomeness of Guan Yu until one sees this film in my opinion.
2
Chi Bi: Xia - Jue zhan tian xia (Red Cliff II) 2009,  Unrated)
3
Ye yan (Legend of the Black Scorpion) (The Banquet) 2006,  Unrated)
Ye yan (Legend of the Black Scorpion) (The Banquet)
Hamlet in Ancient China is not enough to describe this wonderfully violent yet romantic tragedy. It is one of the best films of all time, no doubt! The English language version is horrible however. I suggest you get a copy from China with the name "The Banquet". "Legend of the Black Scorpion" is re-cut but has good extras.
4
Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower) 2006,  R)
Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower)
The perfect tragedy with more twists and turns than a New England roadway!
5
Jet Li's Fearless (Huo Yuan Jia) (Legend of a Fighter) 2006,  PG-13)
Jet Li's Fearless (Huo Yuan Jia) (Legend of a Fighter)
Very good movie about Chinese pride and how their martial arts could be a way to unite them against their enemies.
6
Hero 2002,  PG-13)
Hero
A colorful masterpiece of storytelling from the Qin dynasty and how a hero helped unify all of China when his mission was to stop it!
7
House of Flying Daggers (Shi mian mai fu) 2004,  PG-13)
House of Flying Daggers (Shi mian mai fu)
Action, Drama, Romance, Mystery, and more. This film slowly reveals more of the truth as you realize everyone has been playacting all along. Even better on the second viewing once you know what everyone's true intentions are!
8
The Road Home (Wo de fu qin mu qin) 2000,  G)
The Road Home (Wo de fu qin mu qin)
Possibly the most tear-jerking romantic film you will ever see. This girl is willing to do anything for her future husband. This is what true love is all about! True love will wait forever and never dies.
9
Dragon Inn (Xin long men ke zhan) 1992,  Unrated)
Dragon Inn (Xin long men ke zhan)
Although you would not expect it, this action flick is a morality play with a strong story of redemption and a lot of humorous events! You will laugh, you may cry, but you will definitely be smiling at the end of this movie! And it gets better with every viewing too!
10
The Myth (San wa) 2005,  PG-13)
The Myth (San wa)
Besides some of the cheesy cgi that looks fake, and the over saturation that almost makes the real fire look fake; and the always present lack of resolution in Chinese cinema, it was a fabulously wonderful movie. I will definitely buy this DVD for my collection of favorites!
11
Ming Ming 2006,  Unrated)
Ming Ming
I'm not sure what it is that I like so much about this film. I just watched it again for the third time and I like it more every time. It is sort of a modern wuxia film, but also much, much more.
12
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress 2002,  Unrated)
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress
Other than the horrible abortion, this movie was powerfully moving and wonderful.
13
The Last Emperor 1987,  PG-13)
The Last Emperor
Two stories in one. One of the last Emperor of China, and the second of the modern man he became and how modernism and secularism can destroy even the most powerful men on Earth! While I do love this movie, I feel that the actor chose for the adult Emperor was a poor one, as he often looks more caucasian than Chinese.
14
The Great Conqueror's Concubine (King of Western Chu) (Xi chu bawang) 1994,  Unrated)
The Great Conqueror's Concubine (King of Western Chu) (Xi chu bawang)
The story of the great LIU Bei: a general, warlord, and later the founding emperor of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms era of China. Although having a later start than his rivals, also lacking both the material resources and social status they commanded, Liu Bei overcame his many defeats to carve out his own realm, that at its peak spanned modern day Sichuan, Guizhou, part of Hubei, and part of Gansu.
15
The Great Conqueror's Concubine Pt. B 1994,  Unrated)
The Great Conqueror's Concubine Pt. B
The continuing story of the great LIU Bei: a general, warlord, and later the founding emperor of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms era of China. Although having a later start than his rivals, also lacking both the material resources and social status they commanded, Liu Bei overcame his many defeats to carve out his own realm, that at its peak spanned modern day Sichuan, Guizhou, part of Hubei, and part of Gansu.
16
The Emperor and the Assassin (Jing Ke ci Qin Wang) 1998,  R)
The Emperor and the Assassin (Jing Ke ci Qin Wang)
On the surface, a standard ancient China period piece with Kung Fu. But inside this main plot lays a web of intrigue.
17
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long) 2003,  PG-13)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long)
The first Chinese action movie to popularize wire-fu in America, but also two romantic plots that wrap up the main story of good vs. evil.
18
Warriors of Heaven and Earth (Tian di ying xiong) 2003,  R)
Warriors of Heaven and Earth (Tian di ying xiong)
You might think that a Chinese Western with a Japanese character and a pop singer could not work, but you could not be more wrong. This movie is great for fans of Westerns or Foreign historical drama films based in Ancient China. It also has a powerful spiritual element to it as well that is quite fascinating on a second viewing months later.
19
The Emperor's Shadow (Qin song) 1996,  Unrated)
The Emperor's Shadow (Qin song)
A very interesting take on the story of the First Emperor of China, Emperor Qin. More from the point of view of his family members and his childhood friend, the musician Gao Jianli.

Once Upon a Time in China 1991,  R)
Once Upon a Time in China
This entire series is very good. Although IMO each sequel is a little less that the movie previous to it. The digitally remastered version is the only way to go with this series.
21
Once Upon a Time in China 2 1992,  R)
Once Upon a Time in China 2
This entire series is very good. Although IMO each sequel is a little less that the movie previous to it. The digitally remastered version is the only way to go with this series.

Once Upon a Time in China and America 1997,  Unrated)
Once Upon a Time in China and America
A great sequel to the other movies and a return of Jet Li to the starring role, where he belongs.
24
Chunhyangdyun 2000,  R)
Chunhyangdyun
What a beautiful love story. The story is an instant classic, and maybe already a classic in Korea. It is narrated by a singer which makes for a very different type of film as his performance comes in and out during the story.
25
The Forbidden Kingdom 2008,  PG-13)
The Forbidden Kingdom
I figured this would be a good movie, although I had hesitations about the set up. But in the end it was very good with some hidden meanings you do not catch until the second viewing. The incorporation of Taoist and Buddhist legend worked really well to tell a great fictional historical prequel to the classic Chinese novel, "The Journey West"
26
Chat gim (The Seven Swords) 2005,  R)
Chat gim (The Seven Swords)
The cover description is not very clear, but the story of seven fighters coming together to save the innocent from the unjust evil bounty hunters ends up being more interesting than one would think!
27
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring 2003,  R)
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring
Fascinating! Korean films and Buddhist movies are not really my thing, but this film was powerful, and moving and really spoke to me. It will stay with you for weeks and even months, compelling you to want to watch it over and over and over again many times! A must have flick!
28
Samsara 2002,  R)
Samsara
What is more important: satisfying a thousand desires or conquering just one? A very compelling movie that has many morals. One of the most powerful is a stranger teaching others to stand up for themselves and not following tradition for tradition's sake alone. Unfortunately he ends up making the same mistake, or does he?
29
Muk gong (Battle of Wits) 2006,  R)
Muk gong (Battle of Wits)
Very good historical drama that tugs at your heart strings. A Chinese period piece that does not pull any punches to the cost of war.

So Close 2003,  R)
So Close
I was simply surprised how good this movie was. Full of awesome stunts, technical kung fu, and choreographed better than most movies. This was a great movie that keeps you "yeah-ing" throughout its full running time. And even the conclusion was satisfying. I expect a sequel.
31
Raise the Red Lantern (Da hong deng long gao gao gua) 1991,  PG)
Raise the Red Lantern (Da hong deng long gao gao gua)
I finally saw this classic Chinese movie. Zhang Yimou does a great job as always, and it really shows the problems of polygamy and how jealousy makes things not always be as they appear.
32
Twin Warriors (Tai ji zhang san feng) (The Tai-Chi Master) 1993,  R)
Twin Warriors (Tai ji zhang san feng) (The Tai-Chi Master)
In America this has been re-released as Tai-Chi master and really takes Jet Li on a path rarely seen.
33
The Legend (Fong Sai Yuk) 1993,  R)
The Legend (Fong Sai Yuk)
This really needs a better cover, as this is a really good movie which you cannot tell from the cover. Great movie about the legend of Fong Sai Yuk.
34
Fong Shi Yu II: Wan fu mo di (The Legend 2)(The Legend II) 1993,  PG-13)
Fong Shi Yu II: Wan fu mo di (The Legend 2)(The Legend II)

35
Iron Monkey 1993,  PG-13)
Iron Monkey
Good story about redemption in many ways. And like all Chinese cinema, things are not always as they seem.
36
Vivah 2005,  Unrated)
Vivah
What a beautiful movie about 2 soulmates meeting through a situation that one might not think could promote such a loving, perfect relationship. It is bearly a musical, and although I DESPISE musicals with a passion, I liked this one very much.
37
Outsourced 2007,  PG-13)
Outsourced
A perfect comedy, drama, and romance about a situation hitting home hard today. This is a great movie that I highly reccomend to all working age adults!

Shakespearean English in modern days makes for a bloody violent, but unique twist on one of the classic romantic tragedy.
