Drunken Angel 1948, Unrated)
This is a brilliant film from one of the greatest directors of all time. Kurosawa manages to balance hilarity and deep pathos on a background of poverty and desperation in postwar Japan. Takashi Shimura as the short-tempered doctor is nothing short of sublime while Mifune, in his Kurosawa debut, succeeds in winning over the audience's sympathy as a down-on-his luck hoodlum. |

High and Low (Tengoku to jigoku) (Heaven and Hell) 1962, Unrated)
Incredibly engrossing, impeccably acted and beautifully shot, "High and Low" is a taut, suspenseful gem. The mise en scene is extraordinary; it seems as though each shot could be a painting. The only reason I held back from giving it the full five stars is that the resolution left me mildly dissatisfied. Just a minor quibble against a film that is in all other respects Kurosawa's best, at least in my mind. |
